MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS
Theory of Human Motivation
•An understanding of basic human motivations and
needs.
•According to Maslow, human motivation is based on a
hierarchical system of needs.
•The higher the need the less important it is for sheer
survival.
•Return to lower needs if they are not met.

PHYSIOLOGICAL
•Definition: Most basic needs that are vital for survival.
•Examples of needs: Water, food, air, sleep, warmth, exercise etc.
•How needs are met: Eating, drinking, breathing, resting, sleeping, using the
bathroom.
•Problems: Poor functioning, Starvation, Illness, Dehydration, Death.

THE SAFETY NEEDS
•Definition: Safety, security, freedom from threats and shelter.
•Example of needs: Financial Security, shelter from elements,
freedom from anxiety, protection.
•How needs are met: Secure employment, savings account, safe
neighbor hood, home or shelter. Protector, rules and laws,
military.
•Problems: Anxiety, injury, death.

THE LOVE/BELONGING NEEDS
•Definition: Need to feel loved or you have a place to belong.
•Examples of needs: Give and receive, Acceptance, Companion.
•How needs are met: Friends, family ties, romantic relationship,
club, team, corporation
•Problems: Main cause of psychological problems.

THE ESTEEM NEEDS
•Definition: Need to feel good about oneself and receive recognition from
others.
•Examples of needs: Self-Esteem, Personal worth, social recognition and
accomplishment.
•How needs are met: Positive self-concept, accepting self, success, winning
prizes, reaching goals.
•Problems: Low self-esteem, depression, jealousy, psychological problems.
Feel weak or inferior

SELF-ACTUALIZATION
•Definition: Highest Level of motivation focus is on personal growth,
helping others and attaining highest potential.
•Examples: Striving to be your best, working toward long term goals, reach
unique potential.
•How needs are met: Achieving a life goal, feeling like you are your BEST
self, state of wisdom
•Problems: Low self-esteem, lack of satisfaction, negative attitude.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A
SELF ACTUALIZED PERSON
•Realistic- Accept themselves and society
•Self Driven- Responsibility and Ethics
•Problem Solving- Solve own and others problems
•Independent
•Privacy to develop their own individual potential
•Appreciate everything
•Inspired

•Use your blank sheet of paper to recall any information you need.

•Each round begins with a multi-step problem.
•The first team to get the right answer gets immunity.

•Elimination Rounds
•Vote, Opposing team vote, Random, Double Repeat without vote.
•When two people remain the tribes merge .
•Elimination: Correct answers stay, Fastest has immunity and chooses,
Immunity from random, IFR , IFR, etc.
•When you are eliminated you go to a group that thinks up 5 questions to
stump the champion. Must look for concrete answers.

•The final round is the OUTCASTS vs The SURVIVOR

•10 Seconds: What is the need level called referring to your most basic need.
•10 Seconds: When stranded on a deserted island you find a cave, what need
is met?
•10 Seconds: You trap a squirrel...before killing him you decide to keep him
for company.
•10 Seconds: Succumbing to peer pressure and drinking lowers you from
your esteem needs to meet what level of need?
•10 Seconds: Abandoned children in a 3
rd
world county find and take drugs to
ease their hunger. What need is not met that they are trying to ease.

•30 Seconds: No Papers: Draw and Label Maslow’s Hierarchy
Triangle.
•When you are feeling jealous someone else what need is not being
met.
•What most basic need is being sacrificed when a single Mom spends
less time at home in order to pay for her children to become the best
they can be.
•What most basic need is being sacrificed when an A+ student lets
others cheat off his paper.

•Using only the FIRST letter of each Level to solve the puzzle tell me
what this spells… Highest accomplishment, Sleep, Winning a prize,
Belonging to a family, making friends.

what this spells… Being part of a team, Being voted MVP, Living
near a police station, Reaching a life long goal and feeling at peace
with yourself.

order to make sure he provides for he and his

WHAT NEEDS ARE BEING MET?
•As Tyrone studied in smaller chunks of time, repeatedly
over a few weeks, his quiz grades improved. He began
to see himself as a good student as did his teachers.
•Former Vice-President Al Gore’s film, An Inconvenient
Truth, is nominated for an Oscar and wins. Then, Al
Gore wins the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize!

WHAT NEEDS ARE BEING MET?
•As the conflict between the Sri Lankan government and
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (L.T.T.E.) escalated,
women and children ran through a river to escape
being shelled from both sides.
