3. WHAT IS IEM ? 3 Ethics & Professionalism The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia also known as the IEM. It is a professional learned society serving more than 15,000 members in Malaysia, overseas and the communities in, which they work. It was formed in 1959 and was admitted a member of the Commonwealth Engineers Council in 1962. The Institution is a qualifying body for professional engineers in Malaysia. The Corporate member of the Institution can apply to the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (which is a registration body) for registration as a Professional Engineer, which will entitle him to set up practice. Represents all disciplines of the profession, and is thus able to take a broad view of the professional scene.

4. IS IEM AND BEM THE SAME ? 4 BEM ( Board of Engineers, Malaysia ) is different from IEM. BEM is a government body that regulates the registration of engineers in Malaysia while IEM is a Professional Body or Learned Society for engineers.

5. BEM VS IEM 5 BEM is a statutory body known as the Board of Engineers Malaysia. IEM is a lear n ed s o ci e ty known as t h e Institution of Engineers Malaysia. You cannot be a member of BEM but you can register with BEM. You cannot register with IEM but you can be a member of IEM.

6. BEM VS IEM 6 BEM is like a one-stop registration center. IEM has h e lped to f ormulate t he rules & regulations for registration. IEM is older than BEM. PRO F ESSIO N AL There is no IEM-way or BEM-way to become a PE. Actually they are almost the same, ie, no short-cut !

7. BENEFITS OF JOINING IEM 7 Get assessed on proficiency to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer. Access to a wide network of fellow engineers in the private and public sectors in Malaysia as well as regional and international engineering bodies. Advance professional development by attending regularly organized in-house talks, external conference and site visits. Keep abreast with engineering development via readership of IEM Journals and Bulletins. Formal recognition of your profession. Provides an avenue for networking with other engineers outside your company and also an opportunity to meet industry leaders.

8. BENEFITS OF JOINING IEM Corporate members of IEM are accepted for registration as a professional engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia. Provide participation in continuing education through seminars, workshops, conferences, talks, forums, courses, etc. A strong secretariat to support needs of members and provide guidance. Receive monthly and quarterly publications Access to a well equipped library. Establish relationship with other professional bodies concerning matters of mutual interest. 10. IEM MEMBERSHIP GRADE – STUDENT MEMBERSHIP 10 A student shall be a person who is not less than 17 years of age. The student should be studying engineering in a recognized university or college of equivalent academic standing, or A student pursuing a course of engineering approved by the IEM Council, or Candidate enrolled for Part I or Part II of the IEM/ BE M G rad u ate E x ami n ation o r E x amination of an overseas professional institution recognised by the IEM Council. Submit the following: Application form IEM(S) Birth certificate Diploma certificate and transcripts STPM/SPM/GCE certificate or equivalent Letter from Vice-Chancellor or Head of Department (local university only) Approval letter to sit for IEM/BEM Graduate Examination/Engineering Council Examination

11. A candidate for admission or transfer into this grade shall be not less than 21 years of age. Shall produce evidence to the satisfaction of the IEM Council that he has graduated in engineering from a recognized university with an accredited engineering degree or has obtained an equivalent qualification. IEM MEMBERSHIP GRADE – GRADUATE MEMBERSHIP 11 Application form IEM(G) Birth certificate (only admission cases) Registration letter as a graduate engineer with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia Degree and Diploma certificates together with transcripts Evidence to show discipline/branch of engineering if the information is not in certificate STPM/SPM/GCE/Matriculation certificate or equivalent All United Kingdom graduate must produce evidence to show applicant had spent 2 years in the university in United Kingdom. What are the procedures?

12. IEM MEMBERSHIP GRADE – CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP 12 A candidate for election into this grade shall produce evidence to the satisfaction of the IEM Council that: He is worthy of election, and He has a graduate qualification as approved by the IEM Council. Is a graduate engineer for a minimum period of 3 – 4/ 6 years or based on period specified by IEM/BEM. i.e. Working experience* of 3 years or more for those graduating prior to 1.1.1998 Working experience* of 4 – 6 years or more (depending on period specify by IEM/BEM) for those graduating after 1.1.1998 Preferably the candidate must be working under the guidance of a Professional Engineer. That he has had a formal course of education and training to be an engineer, has had at least 15 years' employment in positions of full responsibility in the design and/or execution of engineering work and fulfill the requirements as a special candidate as specified in the Regulations governing the conduct of the Professional Interview and oral E x amination. * See next slide for more explanations

13. IEM MEMBERSHIP GRADE – CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP W orking e x perience means practical e x perience in engineering in a manner satisfactory to the Council, i.e.: in planning, design, executive or management of such works as are comprised within the profession of engineering , or in engineering research , or the teaching of engineering in a course leading to a qualification. 13

14. IEM MEMBERSHIP GRADE – CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP 14 Referee/ Sup p o r ter Criteria Checking - V er i f ica ti o n Interview Application form IEM/PI (1) and IEM/PI (2) in duplicates. Birth certificate (only for Election cases). BEM Registration Letter as a Graduate Engineer (Election cases). Degree and Diploma certificates together with transcripts. Evidence to show discipline/branch of engineering if the information is not in certificate. STPM/SPM/GCE/Matriculation certificate or equivalent All United Kingdom graduate must produce evidence to show applicant had spent 2 years in the university in United Kingdom. Payments Transfer cases – RM100 Election cases – RM200 Sub m i s s i o n of Docu me n ts Form completed with 1 proposer & 3 seconders Experience clearly tabulated after the date of graduation and breakdown of experience recorded in months Signatures of 2 engineers to verify experience* on each page of the form *For Civil Engineering candidates, at least 1 year site and 1 year design experience are required Form IEM/PI (3) to be submitted when called for the interview. Name will be circulated in IEM Bulletin for a month. Submit IEM form when the interviewers call for interview.
