Location and layout of hospital pharmacy Location: The pharmacy should be located in the hospital premises so that patients & staff can easily approach it. Location of hospital pharmacy should be such that it is convenient for providing service to all departments of hospitals and personnel's who make daily use of such service In Multi-stored building of a hospital, the pharmacy should be preferably located on the ground floor. The department are so laid out that there is a continuous flow of men & material Manufacturing room should be adjacent to the pharmacy.

1.Floor Space Requirement A Pharmacy requires a minimum of 250 sq. feet for any sized hospital. Floor of hospital pharmacy departments should be smooth, easily washable and acid resistant. In manufacturing drains should be provided; walls should be smooth and painted in light color. The wooden cabinets are laminated. Fluorescents lamp are placed immediately above the prescription counter.

3.Requirement of Pharmacist The exact number of pharmacists required depends upon the bed size of the hospital and the nature of activities going on in the hospital pharmacy. The medical council of India has given minimum requirements of pharmacist which is summarized as below Bed Strength Number of Pharmacist Up to 50 beds 3 Up to 100 beds 5 Up to 200 beds 8 Up to 300 beds 10 Up to 500 beds 15
4.Requirement of Qualification The Chief pharmacist or director should have minimum postgraduate degree in pharmacy preferably in Pharmacology or Hospital pharmacy. Manufacturing chemist should be graduate in pharmacy with minimum 18 month experience in manufacturing process of drugs & formulation. Analytical chemist should be post graduate in Pharmaceutical chemistry or analytical chemistry. Registered Pharmacist and pharmacist-cum-clerk should have diploma in pharmacy & should be registered in state pharmacy council.

5.Personnel requirement : A number of activities and processes are carried out in the hospital pharmacy. The activities include in manufacturing, testing, distribution, administration & procurements of materials. A team of persons with D.Pharm, B. Pharm, M. Pharm & Microbiology qualification will be required. The exact number of qualified persons will depends upon the size & the activity of the hospital pharmacy. Chief Pharmacist.
