‹#› History of Health Psychology

Prehistoric Ancient Times Demons control good and evil in the body. Treatment: drill holes in the skull, exorcism 500 BCE-500 CE Greeks and Romans Issues in the body were the result of imbalance of 4 humors (fluids) that flowed through the body. Introduction of BIOLOGY as cause of distress. Treatment: correct underlying pathology (diet, bleeding, exercise) 500-1350 Middle Ages Demonology is back! Christian church dominated society. Hospices incorporate spiritual and physical well-being. 1400-1700 Renaissance Descartes introduces medical biology: separates church and medicine . We start to see disagreements and debates between psychology and biology. How much each dominates.

1800s 19th Century Darwin (mid-1800s): introduces evolution. Pavlov and Freud inspired by Darwin End of the century: William James (“father” of Western Psychology). American Medical Association founded (1847) Reduced focus on philosophy. 1900s 20th Century 1900: Freud solidifies his theories 1930s: Hans Selye showing biological response to threat 1940s: Cannon’s work supports biological connection with psychological issues 1950: Franz Alexander posits that ulcers can be caused by unconscious processes. Medical Sociology and Medical Anthropology introduce concepts of psycho-social aspects of health. Despite this, the advent of vaccines and medications result in public perception that health is due to “miracle cures.” 1970s: movement towards prevention versus treatment. 1980s: Recognition of impact of chronic stress on allostatic load of body.

Health Psychology In other words: How does psychology impact our health and how does it interact with the healthcare system? -Interdisciplinary, focused on both treatment and systemic recognition and intervention. -Connection of psychological and biological processes. “The scientific study of psychological processes related to health and health care .” Friedman (2011), emphasis added.

Treatment in a different context Behavioral Health Consultant Outpatient psychotherapy 15-30 min Not weekly 24/7 Inpatient Psychology 50 minute sessions Once per week

Compare/Contrast Health Psychologist Appointments may be as short as 15 min Can also serve as consultant, where you don’t see patient at all. See many patients per day (30+, depending on model) Appointments may not be regular When patient comes in to see doctor Insurance almost always taken* Diagnosis often required Appointment length and frequency may be determined by insurance/clinic Theoretical orientation typically solution-focused Practice is collaborative, share information with other members of team “Traditional” Psychologist Appointments are typically 45-50 min See ~4-8 patients a day Appointments are weekly or every-other week. Sometimes, might be twice per week Practice is independent and highly confidential Between you and the patient Insurance is sometimes taken Diagnosis may or may not be required Theoretical orientation and session frequency up to therapist and patient

Think, Pair, Share What changes to your current practice would you need to implement to adjust to a behavioral health environment? Think about: Types of interventions Conceptualization Length of appointments Theoretical Orientation
