2018 DECEMBER RETREAT BIBLE DOCTRINE SESSION 1 29-12-2018
INTRODUCTION In this session, we will look at the inspiration of the Bible and its message of redemption to man. The word of God is the only infallible truth we have. It teaches us about the Trinity, the virgin birth of Jesus, mans sinfulness and God’s solution to sin through His only begotten Son.
BIBLE DOCTRINE 1: THE HOLY BIBLE The Holy Bible, consisting of 39 books of the Old and 27 of the New Testament, is the inspired Word of God. We take the Bible as final authority in all matters concerning Christian conduct and work. QUESTION 1: What is the origin of the Bible? – 2 Timothy 3:16,17; 2 Peter 1:19-21 QUESTION 2: What should be our attitude to the Bible? – Proverbs 30:5,6; Revelation 22:18,19
BIBLE DOCTRINE 2: THE GODHEAD The Godhead consists of three separate, distinct and recognisable personalities and qualities, perfectly united in one. The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are different Persons in the Godhead, not merely three names for one Person. QUESTION 1: What do these references say about the Trinity? – Matthew 3:16,17; John 20:17; Acts 5:3,4; Hebrews 1:8 QUESTION 2: What is the relationship between these three Persons? – Genesis 1:26; John 10:30; 16:13-15; 1 John 5:7
BIBLE DOCTRINE 3: THE VIRGIN BIRTH OF JESUS The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, was born of a virgin. It equally teaches the crucifixion, death, burial and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. QUESTION 1: Narrate the account of Christ’s virgin birth – Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-25. QUESTION 2: What is the proof that Christ came in the flesh? – John 1:14; Luke 24:38-40; Acts 10:39-41; 1 Corinthians 15:3,4
BIBLE DOCTRINE 4: THE DEPRAVITY OF MAN The Bible teaches that mankind is totally depraved, sinful and guilty since the Fall, subjecting them to God’s wrath and condemnation. QUESTION 1: What does man’s depravity imply? – Genesis 6:5,11,12; Romans 3:23 QUESTION 2: Why is sin universal? – Job 14:4; Psalm 51:5; 1 Corinthians 15:21,22
BIBLE DOCTRINE 5: REPENTANCE Repentance is complete turning away from sin and its deceitful pleasures. It is required of every sinner before he can truly and effectively believe in Jesus with saving faith. QUESTION 1: What is repentance? – Proverbs 28:13; John 8:10,11 QUESTION 2: Why is repentance necessary? – Luke 13:1-5; Acts 3:19 QUESTION 3: Who should repent? – Acts 17:30;31; 26:19,20
BIBLE DOCTRINE 6: RESTITUTION Restitution is making amends for wrongs done against our fellowmen: restoring stolen things to their rightful owners, paying debts, giving back where one has defrauded, making confessions to the offended and apologising to those slandered. Restitution is needed to have a conscience void of offence toward God and man. QUESTION 1: Why is restitution important? – Genesis 20:3,7; Ezekiel 33:14-16; Matthew 5:23,24; Acts 24:16 QUESTION 2: What attitude should one show when making restitution? – Genesis 20:8,14; Luke 19:8
BIBLE DOCTRINE 7: JUSTIFICATION Justification is the act of God’s grace whereby one’s sins are forgiven and is counted righteous before God, through faith in the atoning blood of Jesus, standing before God as though he had never sinned. QUESTION 1: How can a sinner be justified? – Romans 4:3-5,23-25; 5:1; Galatians 2:16 QUESTION 2: What are the benefits of justification? – Jeremiah 31:34; Romans 5:1,2; 8:1-4
CONCLUSION The Bible is God’s word; it is His message to man. Sin is universal and it attracts God’s judgment. Repentance is God’s commandment to all. God forgives all who repent; He justifies those who believe on Jesus Christ as God’s only begotten Son. Come over to the Lord’s side if you have not. Believe on the Son of God and let Him set free from the guilt of sin and its eternal consequences.
