Good Life- according to the different schools of thoughts

1. MATERIALISM In terms of human flourishing, matter is what makes us attain happiness. Materialism is a theory or belief that claims that the material things that we possess is the one that give us ultimate happiness. We see this at work with most people who are clinging on to material wealth as the primary source of meaning of their existence.

Theory of Materialism and Quality of Life ( M.Joseph Sirgy ) This theory of materialism claims that overall satisfaction is referred to as the Quality of Life which is partly determined by the satisfaction of our STANDARD OF LIVING Standard of Living is determined through evaluation of the ACTUAL Standard of living VS. a set of goal Materialists have greater DISSATISFACTION with Standard of Living compared with non-materialist

Causes of DISSATISFACTION Standard of Living goals are INFLATED and UNREALISTICALLY HIGH (usually influenced by social companions) They engage in equity comparisons involving work and income How is your standard of living goal influenced by the social media and the people around you?

2.HEDONISM

What are the “pleasures” that young people nowadays engage in? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7 8. 9. 10.

Hedonism The Hedonists see the end goal of life is acquiring pleasure . ( There is absence of pain) Pleasure has always been the priority of hedonists. For them life is obtaining and indulging in pleasure because life is limited. They believe that pleasure give meaning to their life without thinking of the future. The mantra of this school of thought is the famous, “Eat, drink and merry for tomorrow we will die . Hedonism ignores all other values such as freedom or fairness when evaluating right and wrong.

3.STOICISM

3. STOICISM This term refers to a form of ancient Greek philosophy, which according to its advocates, offers some sage advice on how to live a more meaningful life. The Stoics believed that everything we face in life, however difficult it may be, is an opportunity to respond with virtue . According to the members of this school of philosophy, acting or RESPONDING WITH VIRTUE is the foundation of all happiness, success, meaning, honour, and love. HUMANISM

Humanism i s another school of thought that espouses the freedom of man to (1) carve his own destiny and to (2) legislate his own laws , (3) free from the shackles of a God that monitors and controls.

For humanists, Man is literally the captain of his own ship . They see themselves not merely as stewards of the creation but as individuals who are in control of themselves and the world outside them.
