21 st century literary genres Prepared by: CLARE T. SIPLON LPT

Illustrated Novel It is a hybrid narrative medium in which images and text work together to tell a story. It can take various forms, including fiction written for adults or children, magazine fiction, comic strips, and picture books. 50% of the narrative is presented without words.

THE MARVELS By: Brian Selznick

Did you know that? Apart from an occasional portrait or map, 18th century fiction was not usually illustrated, as publishers did not commission illustrations for new novels. Illustrations were commissioned for already successful books. These illustrated versions were usually published as limited editions and sold through prior subscription. During the 19th century, the use of photomechanical techniques decreased the cost of reproducing illustrations. Both colour and black and white illustrations were increasingly used in daily, weekly, and monthly publications. Publishers sold a great deal of one-volume hardcovers and periodical serials.

Did you know that? The amount of illustrated fiction that was published declined from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1930s. By the 1930s, illustrations were rarely used in adult's novels. Illustrated serious fiction was not popular over the rest of the century. The decline in the publication of serials, rise in labor costs, and competition from film, television, and photojournalism contributed to its decline. There was also less demand from readers .  Historians of Western illustrated fiction mostly agree that film replaced the illustrated book.

Digi-fiction  A fiction that is written for and read from a computer and can be web- or app-based (for tablets and smartphones) or accessed via CD-ROMs. Digital fictions are different to e-books, however. Rather than existing as a digital version of a print novel, digital fictions are what are known as “born digital” – that is, they would lose something of their aesthetic and/or structural form and meaning if they were removed from the digital medium.

Digi-fiction  Students must engage navigating, reading, and viewing in all three formats.

Graphic Novels  A book made up of  comics  content. Although the word " novel " normally refers to long fictional works, the term "graphic novel" is applied broadly and includes fiction, non-fiction, and anthologized work. It is distinguished from the term " comic book ", which is generally used for comics  periodicals .

Graphic Novels  Responding to writer  Douglas Wolk's quip that the difference between a graphic novel and a comic book is " the binding "   Bone  creator Jeff Smith  said, “…and the difference is, a graphic novel is a novel in the sense that there is a beginning, a middle and an end ."  The Times  writer  Giles Coren  said, "To call them graphic novels is to presume that the novel is in some way ‘higher’ than the comic book, and that only by being thought of as a sort of novel can it be understood as an art form."

Manga  It is a generic term for all comic book and graphic novels. These are  comics  created in  Japan  or by creators in the  Japanese language , conforming to a style developed in Japan in the late 19th century. Kinds of Manga: Shonen—boy’s manga Shojo —girl’s manga

Manga   Seinen —men’s manga Josei—women’s manga Kodomo —children’s manga

Doodle Fiction Literary presentation that incorporates doodle writing and drawing and handwritten graphics in place of traditional font. A  doodle  is a  drawing  made while a person's attention is otherwise occupied. Doodles are simple drawings that can have concrete representational meaning or may just be composed of random and  abstract  lines, generally without ever lifting the drawing device from the paper, in which case it is usually called a "scribble"

Example

Text-Talk Novels  is a  literary  work originally written on a  cellular phone  via  text messaging . This type of  literature  originated in Japan, where it has become a popular  literary genre . However, its popularity has also spread to other  countries internationally, especially to  China ,  United States ,  Germany , and  South Africa . Chapters usually consist of about 70-100 words each due to character limitations on cell phones.

Example:

Chick Literature  It is  genre fiction , which "consists of heroine-centered narratives that focus on the trials and tribulations of their individual protagonists".   The genre often addresses issues of modern womanhood – from romantic relationships to female friendships to matters in the workplace – in humorous and lighthearted ways.

Example

Flash Fiction  It is a fictional work of extreme brevity that still offers character and plot development. Identified varieties, many of them defined by  word count , include the  six-word story , the 280-character story (also known as " twitterature "), the "dribble" (also known as the " minisaga "; 50 words), the " drabble " (also known as " microfiction "; 100 words), "sudden fiction" (750 words), flash fiction (1,000 words), nanotale , and "micro-story". Some commentators have suggested that flash fiction possesses a unique literary quality, in its ability to hint at or imply a larger story.

Six-word Flash Fiction Will you… please? No! Goodbye. I demand your money! No! Bang! Where? Just here? ¾ enjoyable? Ooooh ! Help! What? Can’t hear, sorry. Aaaaaargh … Candle snuffed… whose hand grips mine??? (Enriched plutonium) + (psychopath) = extinction. by  James Holden  works as a geek.

Science Fiction (often shortened to  Sci-Fi  or  SF ) It is a  genre  of  speculative fiction , typically dealing with  imaginative  concepts such as advanced  science  and  technology ,  spaceflight ,  time travel , and  extraterrestrial life . Science fiction often explores the potential consequences of scientific and other  innovations , and has been called a "literature of ideas"

Speculative fiction   It is an  umbrella  genre encompassing narrative fiction  with supernatural or futuristic elements. This includes, science fiction, fantasy, superhero fiction, science fantasy, horror, utopian and dystopian fiction , supernatural fiction as well as combinations thereof.

Example

Example

Blog It is a discussion or informational  website  published on the  World Wide Web consisting of discrete, often informal  diary -style text entries ("posts"). Posts are typically displayed in reverse chronological order, so that the most recent post appears first, at the top of the web page.

Blog Structure The appearance of blogs changed over time, and nowadays blogs include different items. But, most blogs include some standard features and structure. Here are common features that typical blog will include: Header  with the  menu  or navigation bar Main content area with highlighted or latest blog posts Sidebar with social profiles, favorite content, or call-to-action Footer with relevant links like a disclaimer, privacy policy, contact page, etc.

Creative Nonfiction It (also known as  literary nonfiction  or  narrative nonfiction  or  verfabula ) is a  genre  of  writing  that uses literary styles and techniques to create factually accurate narratives. Creative nonfiction contrasts with other  nonfiction , such as academic  or  technical writing  or  journalism , which is also rooted in accurate fact, but is not written to entertain based on writing style or florid prose.

Example

Hyperpoetry This genre, also called cyberpoetry as well as other names, has many definitions and, like hyperfiction, is difficult to categorize.  Much poetry on the web is basically just traditional work uploaded.  True hyperpoetry refers to works of verse (although not necessarily in lines and stanzas) which could not be presented without the computer.

Hyperpoetry Hyperpoetry is usually highly steeped in the visual and sometimes involves parts that are read in varying orders. Holopoetry refers to 3-dimensional visual art that combines words with images using holographic techniques.
