Rampur/Lucknow:
Chief Minister Yogi
Adityanath on Tuesday
broadsided the Sama-
jwadi Party in the bas-
tion of its Rampur MP
Azam Khan, saying that
the BJP’s double engine
government worked to
liberate the poor from
the land mafia.
“Bhu-mafia ki rassi
jal gayi par ainthan
nahi gayi. BJP won’t let
Rampur become a ‘den
of terrorism’ again,”
Yogi said. The CM was
addressing public meet-
ings in Bilaspur and
Milak areas ahead of
by-polls in support of
BJP candidate Ghan-
shyam Singh Lodhi.
“Earlier, land mafias
used to encroach land
of the poor and often
suppressed them. After
coming to power, our
govt gave the land back
to the poor and took ac-
tion against such mafi-
as along with giving
them the required pun-
ishment,” he said.
The CM went on to
say that the district has
its own heritage, but
some people attempted
to destroy the heritage
of Rampur. “If anyone
will try to destroy its
identity, then the public
also knows well how to
teach them a lesson. To-
day, no one can dare en-
croach on the land of
the poor, women are
safe,” he said.
He also lambasted SP
for using the Rampuri
Chaku for capturing the
property of the poor. “It
is up to you to decide
whom to give the Ram-
puri knife. In the hands
of good people, it would
be used to protect the
poor and downtrodden,
but wrong people will

Ex-bureaucrats seek SC’s
intervention to check ‘bulldozing’
New Delhi (PTI): A
group of retired civil
servants on Tuesday
wrote an open letter to
Chief Justice of India
N V Ramana seeking
intervention by the Su-
preme Court in alleged
illegal detention, bull-
dozing of residences
and police violence in
Uttar Pradesh follow-
ing protests against
certain objectionable
remarks made by two
now-removed BJP
functionaries.
“What is even more
alarming is that the
idea of ‘bulldozer jus-
tice’, of inflicting bru-
tal punishment on citi-
zens who dare to pro-
test lawfully or criti-
cise the government
or express dissent by
using ostensibly legal
instruments, is now
becoming the norm
rather than the excep-
tion across many In-
dian states,” they said
in the letter.
“There is a sense of
impunity and the ar-
rogance of majoritar-
ian power which
seems to be driving
this disregard for con-
stitutional values and
principles,” they said.
The signatories in-
clude former Union
Home Secretary G K
Pillai, former Foreign
Secretary Sujatha Sin-
gh, former Indian Po-
lice Service (IPS) offic-
ers Julio Ribeiro, Avi-
nash Mohananey, Max-
well Pereira and A K

tary Anita Agnihotri.

SPEAKER MAHANA SHARES CHORES WITH
STREET VENDOR, SERVES CUSTOMERS
2 more held for mass killings in Kanpur
1984 ANTI-SIKH RIOTS
Kanpur (PTI): A spe-
cial investigation team
probing the anti-Sikh
riots here in 1984 arrest-
ed two more people for
mass killings and set-
ting a house ablaze, in
which three people
were charred to death,
said a senior official on
Tuesday.
The arrests were
made from Ghatampur
and the number of those
held by the SIT so far
has reached six.
The SIT was formed
by the Uttar Pradesh
government three years
to re-investigate the cas-
es related to the riots,
which had claimed 127
lives in Kanpur. The ri-
ots followed the assassi-
nation of then prime
minister Indira Gandhi
by her Sikh bodyguards.
The two arrested were
identified as Mobeen
Shah (60) and Amar
Singh, alias Bhura (61).
They were produced
before the court of the
chief metropolitan mag-
istrate, which remanded
them into 14-day judicial
custody, said Deputy In-
spector General of Po-
lice (DIG) Balendu Bhu-
shan Singh, who is head-
ing the SIT.
Amar Singh is a histo-
ry-sheeter from Ghata-
mpur and about a dozen
criminal cases are regis-
tered against him. He is
also actively associated
with the notorious
“Nanha gang” of the re-
gion, the DIG said.
They have been
booked under Indian Pe-
nal Code Sections 396
(dacoity with murder)
and 436 (Mischief by fire
or explosive substance
with intent to destroy
house), he said.
Efforts are being
made to arrest all ab-
sconding perpetrators
at the earliest, the DIG
said.
The crackdown start-
ed on June 15 after the
SIT held four prime ac-
cused from Ghatampur.
The SIT was consti-
tuted by the state gov-
ernment on May 27,
2019, on the orders of
the Supreme Court and

Lucknow: Even though
the state government
has extended the date of
wheat procurement by
UP government agen-
cies up to June 30, the
possibility of achieving
the target of 60 lakh tons
appears to be remote.
These agencies could so
far purchase 3.30 lakh
tons which is just 5.5 per
cent of the target.
According to official
information during the
last two months (pro-
curement started on
April 1) the purchase at
procurement centre was
extremely slow as the
farmers preferred to sell
the produce to traders in
free market who offered
them high prices. As
against MSP of Rs 2015
per quintal wheat in
open market was sold at
the rate of Rs 2200 to
2500 quintal leaving the
government agencies in
a piquant situation. This
is for the second time
such a situation has
arisen as in 2006-07 the
government agencies
could procure only
50,000 tons wheat, which
was lowest in procure-
ment history of UP.
There was aggressive
purchasing by the pri-
vate players directly
from the field on cash
payment creating this
piquant situation for the
central and state gov-
ernments in north In-
dia. The fall has been
noticed in all wheat pro-
ducing states like UP,
MP, Haryana, Rajasthan
and Punjab.
The government had
fixed a target of pur-
chase of 60 L MT wheat
and purchase agencies
have been asked to di-
rectly approach the
farmers to buy the com-
modity. Reports indicat-
ed that there was not
much arrival wheat at
5000 government pur-
chase centres in UP. Ac-
cording to latest infor-
mation around 87000
farmers chose to sell 3.3
lakh tons wheat worth
Rs 665 crore.
Russian-Ukraine war
has come as boon in dis-
guise for wheat produc-
ing farmers in India as
the price of commodity
has shot up drastically.
The farmers, who were
forced to sell wheat in
open market at a low
price of Rs 1400 to 1500
per quintal last year, got
high price. The sharp
increase in price of
wheat market was large-
ly because of massive
jump in international
market due to war.
UP govt unlikely to achieve wheat procurement target even by June 30

JOLT TO MACRON
BUT FAR RIGHT’S
MARINE LE PEN
CAUSES TREMORS
n a setback to Emma-
nuel Macron his En-
semble alliance failed
to win a majority in
the parliamentary
elections. Mr Macron now finds
himself sandwiched between
Marine Le Pen’s far right Nation-
al Rally and Jean-Luc Melenchon
of the left coalition NUPES jeop-
ardising implementation of his
political agenda. Will Macron
make compromises or will the
Fifth Republic see a government
in deadlock with the French Pres-
ident’s reform plans in limbo?
The biggest surprise thrown up
by the French electorate is their
support for Marine Le Pen’s party
which jumped from previously
held eight seats to 89 in the
577-member hung parliament. It
was described as a “seismic
event” in French politics. The Left
parties also won 131 seats to be the
principal opposition. The Ensem-
ble alliance won 245 seats but was
well short of majority, leaving the
parliament fragmented.
The result showed that the
voter did not buy Macron’s sof-
tening stand on pension reforms
and raising of retirement age
which came just before parlia-
mentary elections.
I
entre has cau-
tioned Indian
states which are
equal to the size
of Pakistan and
Sri Lanka to cut down on
their debts to avoid an eco-
nomic crisis being faced by
the two neighbouring coun-
tries. The Union finance min-
istry officials recently ad-
dressed a meeting of state
chief secretaries to flag the
issue of burgeoning fiscal
problems in some of the
states which, if not controlled
now, may go out of hand. Un-
controlled debt and capital
expenditure of some of the
states could adversely impact
the performance of the econ-
omy at the national level.
An article by a team of
economists under the super-
vision of Reserve Bank of
India stated that Punjab, Ra-
jasthan, Bihar, West Bengal
and Kerala, the five most in-
debted states, need to cut
down on expenditure as their
debt has become unsustain-
able. Although the RBI arti-
cle does not mention Uttar
Pradesh, the state which is
almost the size of Pakistan
and like Pakistan has a popu-
lation of 200 million, also has
a huge debt burden. As per
2021-22 budget estimates the
state’s liabilities were around
Rs 6.5 lakh crore.
The five debt-ridden states
have questioned the hypoth-
esis of their being in a debt
trap. Kerala has said no to cut-
ting down expenditure. Only
a marginal cut in the revenue
expenditure is possible, said
former finance minister TM
Thomas Isaac. Rajasthan has
blamed “wrong” decisions of
the Centre like demonetiza-
tion and GST for its debt bur-
den and has asked for a stimu-
lus package. In Bengal, wel-
fare schemes were held re-
sponsible for increase in its
borrowings. These counter
arguments, however, do not
address the problem.
DEBT BURDEN OF
STATES A CONCERN
An article by a team of
economists under supervision
of RBI stated that Punjab,
Rajasthan, Bihar, WB and
Kerala, 5 most indebted
states, need to cut down on
expenditure as their debt has
become unsustainable
C
FINALLY, AFTER MUCH ANXIETY…
OPPN GETS ITS CANDIDATE
ver since Mamata Banerjee
registered that historic vic-
tory in the state Assembly
elections in 2021, her efforts
to unite the Opposition on at
least three occasions have
not turned out to be an easy
task. In March 2021, Mamata
had written to Opposition
honchos, urging them to
unite against the BJP’s al-
leged ‘assaults’ on democra-
cy and the Constitution.
Again in July 2021, Mama-
ta’s visit to Delhi stoked spec-
ulations over the fact if she
was actually pitching herself
as the PM candidate for the
2024 Lok Sabha polls. She
was, however, extremely cau-
tious and categorically ruled
out her (prime ministerial)
ambitions. When asked, she
reiterated that she was only
a “simple worker”.
She, however, was keen to
drive home the message that
her efforts were to unite Oppo-
sition forces at least for talks so
that there could be a consensus
among parties to chalk out a
concrete plan to defeat the Nar-
endra Modi-led BJP. However,
all that is past now. Her recent
bid to bring the Opposition
camp into a huddle over the
crucial presidential polls is
also facing rough weather.
After NCP chief Sharad
Pawar and former Jammu
and Kashmir chief minister
Farooq Abdullah declined
the offer to be the joint Op-
position candidate, the third
jolt came in the form of Go-
palkrishna Gandhi, former
Governor of West Bengal,
who also refused the offer.
The process to elect a presi-
dential candidate began on
June 15 with the last date for
filing of nominations being
June 29. The polls are sched-
uled to be held on July 18.
The NCP veteran’s reluc-
tance pulled the plug on the
Opposition camp’s zeal and
NCP insiders said that Pawar
being a “people’s man” won’t
“restrict himself to Rashtra-
pati Bhavan”. “…don’t think
he is keen on it (contesting
the election). Saheb (Pawar)
is a people’s man who loves
meeting people. He will not
restrict himself to Rashtra-
pati Bhavan,” the party
sources said.
In a quick move, Farooq
Abdullah’s name was circu-
lated. However, unwilling to
contest, he said, “I believe
that J&K is passing through
a critical juncture and my ef-
forts are required to help
navigate these uncertain
times. Therefore, I would like
to respectfully withdraw my
name from consideration
and I look forward to sup-
porting the joint opposition
consensus candidate.”
Meanwhile, according to
news reports on Monday, BSP
supremo Mayawati’s name
was suggested by some Con-
gress leaders in Rajasthan
who backed their theory by
saying that Mayawati, the
face of Dalit politics in the
country, would be a better
choice as the Dalits, in the
larger context in the country,
have faith in the Congress
and in the bigger picture, this
would put the Grand Old Par-
ty in a better frame of things.
However, there was more
bad news for the Opposition
camp on Monday when Go -
palkrishna Gandhi too de-
clined the offer. The former
civil servant said the Opposi-
tion needs a candidate who
will generate a national con-
sensus and ensure unity. “I
am most grateful to them (the
Opposition),” Gandhi said.
The Opposition’s fight
looks stunted before it even
could begin and with the date
for filing the nomination
hardly a week away, it is time
they zero in on a candidate at
least to reach a stage where
an election for the top post
takes place… or else with the
kind of bonhomie the Opposi-
tion parties are showing in
terms of uniting, with the
Lok Sabha elections just two
years away, one wonders
whether they would be able to
put up a unified fight at all...!
It may be noted that while
Leaders of Congress, Sama-
jwadi Party, NCP, DMK, RJD
and the Left parties attended
the meeting called by Mamata,
AAP, TRS and BJD skipped it!
Tuesday was, however, agog
with breaking news coming in
that Yashwant Sinha is being
considered as the Opposi-
tion’s joint candidate. On
Tuesday, he announced that
he would be stepping aside
from party work for the larger
national cause of Opposition
unity. The development comes
a day after the TMC chief pro-
posed his name. “I am grateful
to Mamataji for the honour
and prestige she bestowed on
me in the TMC. Now, time has
come when for a larger na-
tional cause I must step aside
from the party to work for
greater opposition unity. I am
sure she approves of the step,”
Sinha tweeted.
Meanwhile, after much de-
liberation and anxiety sev-
eral major Opposition par-
ties, including the Congress,
the NCP and the TMC, on
Tuesday picked former Un-
ion minister Yashwant Sinha
as their candidate for the
July 18 presidential polls.
Opposition leaders, who
gathered at the Parliament an-
nexe for the meeting convened
by NCP chief Sharad Pawar to
decide on a common candi-
date for the much-discussed
presidential election, unani-
mously agreed on Sinha’s
name. This, thus… brings to
rest the long-drawn heart-
burn reflux over the Opposi-
tion unity factor as the parties
have finally shown some “con-
nect” or else it would have
been a cakewalk for the NDA.

No rollback of Agnipath; good for Army, youth: NSA Doval
New Delhi (ANI): Amid
protests against the Ag-
nipath defence recruit-
ment scheme, National
Security Adviser (NSA)
Ajit Doval said on Tues-
day that “there is no
question” of a rollback.
“India has among the
youngest populations in
the world; yet it cannot
continue to have an
army with a high aver-
age age,” he told media,
arguing that the new
system will ensure a
more tech-savvy army.
NSA Doval is the lat-
est among those de-
ployed by the govern-
ment to defend the
scheme for recruiting
‘Agniveer’ soldiers on
four-year contracts
without pension. Only
up to 25 per cent of these
recruits may be given
regular commission of
15 years thereafter. This
has led to violent pro-
tests across India.
On the protests, he
said vandalism is not
justified. “Those doing
this are not the aspir-
ants; the real ones are at
home, preparing.” He
said that while some
veterans had genuine
concerns and were now
changing their minds,
there are people who
“just want conflict in
society to discredit the
government”.
Speaking about the
future of Agniveers let
go after four years, he
asserted that the age
of “settling down” is
around 25-26 now. “Peo-
ple are speaking of one
life-two careers, even
three careers now.
When recruits from
the first batch of Ag-
niveers retire, India
will be 5-trillion-dollar
economy; industry
will need people who
have age on their side.
These men and women
will still be young and
won’t have family com-
pulsions.”

brings peace to our uni-

The Prime Minister
was accompanied at the
event by Union Minis-
ter for AYUSH, Sarba-
nanda Sonowal, Karna-
taka Governor Gover-
nor Thaawarchand Ge-
hlot and Chief Minister
Basavaraj S Bommai.
"No matter how
stressful an atmosphere
we are in, meditation
for a few minutes relax-
es us and boosts our
productivity. So we
should not consider
yoga an additional
work. We have to know
yoga and live yoga and
make it our own," the
Prime Minister said.
"Yoga is no longer a
part of life, but is be-
coming a way of life,"
he added.
"This whole universe
starts from our own
body and soul. The uni-
verse starts from us.
And, Yoga makes us con-
scious of everything
within us and builds a
sense of awareness," the
Prime Minister said.
Since 2015, the Inter-
national Day of Yoga is
celebrated worldwide
on June 21 every year.
The theme for this
year's Yoga day is "Yoga
for Humanity".

First India Bureau
Jammu: Union Minis-
ter, Dr. Jitendra Singh,
inaugurated a Seismol-
ogy Observatory at Ud-
hampur in the Jammu
division on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occa-
sion, he said Udhampur
has now emerged on the
world seismological
map with the installa-
tion of the latest up-
graded Seismological
Observatory by the Min-
istry of Earth Sciences.
Secretary DST, Dr. M
Ravichandran was also
present during the in-
auguration.
Dr. Singh said that
during the last eight
years under Prime Min-
ister Narendra Modi’s
leadership, India has
installed more than 70
such observatories
across the country, com-
pared to just 80 installed
in over six decades.
While dedicating the
observatory to the peo-
ple, the minister said
that PM Narendra Modi
has laid renewed em-
phasis on the scientific
programmes by prior-
itising science and tech-
nology-based develop-
ments and allocating
sufficient budget to the
science departments.
He also said that in the
last 7-8 years, the depart-
ments that previously
did not get due impor-
tance are prioritised.
One such department
brought into the fore-
front is the Department
of Earth Sciences which
used to work in anonym-
ity earlier, he added.

Ahmedabad: The Patel
chapter of the Congress
party was closed before
the assembly elections
in Gujarat. Congress’s
Decorated Patel leader
Hardik Patel has left the
party and is now root-
ing for Bharatiya Jana-
ta Party and Narendra
Modi. On the other
hand, Naresh Patel has
declared that he will not
enter active politics yet.
Remember, Naresh Pa-
tel is a leader of the in-
fluential Leuva Patel
community and is the
chairman of the Shrik-
hodladham Trust. He
said that senior people
associated with the so-
ciety do not want him to
enter politics. Anyway,
after the failure of the
Congress deal with
Prashant Kishor, it
seemed that Naresh Pa-
tel would stay away
from the Congress.
Keep in mind that
Naresh Patel’s joining
the Congress was dis-
cussed only at the time
of Prashant Kishor
joining the Congress. It
was Prashant Kishor
who had made him meet
the top Congress lead-
ers. Patel also had a con-
dition that if Prashant
Kishor contests the
Congress elections,
then he would join the
Congress. Now since he
has refused to enter ac-
tive politics, there is no
question of joining Con-
gress. In this way the
Congress once again
has kept itself away
from ‘Patel politics’.
Anyway, Congress nev-
er used to do Patel poli-
tics in Gujarat. Patels
have been voting for the
BJP for more than 30
years. Unlike the Patels,
the focus of the Con-
gress is on the weak
equations i.e. Kshatri-
yas, Harijans, Adivasis
and Muslims. This time
also the Congress will
fight the elections on
the same formula.

Is Haryana’s Lal
Parivar with BJP?
Sharat K Verma
Chandigarh: There
was a time when Hary-
ana was dominated by
the ‘Lal Parivar’ and
the entire politics of
the state used to re-
volve around them.
But if their effect is not
completely over now, it
can surely be said that
it has definitely re-
duced a lot. After this
time’s Rajya Sabha
elections, a ‘jumla’ was
heard about the family
of the three ‘Lals’ of
Haryana, that the
three families are com-
pletely in support of
BJP, although it can
not be said for certain
how true or untrue
this claim is.
Keep in mind that
the family of Chaud-
hary Devi Lal is divid-
ed but in the Rajya
Sabha elections, the
entire family voted for
the BJP. Dushyant
Chautala is already
with the BJP but his
uncle and the lone
INLD MLA Abhay
Chautala also voted for
a BJP-backed inde-
pendent candidate.
Kuldeep Bishnoi, son
of Haryana’s second
Lal - Bhajan Lal- is in
Congress but he voted
for a BJP-backed inde-
pendent on the basis of
conscience in the Rajya
Sabha elections. Now
there is speculation of
him joining the BJP. In
this way the family of
two Lals - Devi Lal and
Bhajan Lal - is directly
with the BJP. The third
i.e. Banshilal’s family is
officially with the Con-
gress, but it is being
said that in the RS
polls, Banshilal’s
daughter-in-law Kiran
Choudhary deliberate-
ly made her vote inva-
lid to ensure BJP-
backed Independent’s
victory. Although she is
denying this, the Con-
gress leaders, on the
other hand, find it hard
to digest her claim.

Bulldozers make appearance
during flag marches in Aligarh
Aligarh is one of the worst-hit districts
where the violence broke out The SC is hearing petitions over the
demolition of houses using bulldozers
Aligarh (PTI): In a
controversial move, the
district police here in-
cluded bulldozers in
some of the flag march-
es in the city after the
violence over the Cen-
tre’s Agnipath scheme.
Former Samajwadi
Party MLA from Ali-
garh Zameer Ulla Khan
criticised the move say-
ing damaging anyone’s
property can’t be justi-
fied. Bulldozers are be-
ing seen here as a pos-
sible deterrent against
violent protests.
After damage to pub-
lic property in protests
following now-suspend-
ed BJP leader Nupur
Sharma’s remarks
against Prophet Mo-
hammad, there have
been cases where the
authorities allegedly
used bulldozers to de-
molish houses of those
involved in violence.
The authorities had,
however, said action
was taken according to
the law as the struc-
tures were constructed
without the approval
of the building plan.
The SC is also hearing
petitions over the al-
leged demolition of
houses using bulldoz-
ers following the vio-
lent protests.
Aligarh is one of the
worst-hit districts
where violence broke
out over the Agnipath
scheme. However, po-
lice said no untoward
incident has taken
place in the district
since Friday evening.
Police patrolling has
continued unabated in
all affected areas under
the Tappal, Khair and
Lodha police stations
SSP Kalanidhi
Naithani said 30 pro-
testers were arrested
on Monday in connec-
tion with the Friday’s
violence. So far, 67 peo-
ple have been held, he
said. Five additional
companies of the PAC
have been deployed in
the affected areas, the
SSP told reporters.
Though police officials
neither denied nor de-
fended the use of bull-
dozers, eye-witnesses
said the machines were
used during flag march-
es on Monday in a num-
ber of areas at Khair
and Tappal. Former SP
MLA from Aligarh city
Zameer Ulla Khan took
a dig at police on this
issue. Khan told report-
ers,” Damaging public
property during any
kind of agitation can-
not be justified in any
situation. Using bull-
dozers for crushing dis-
sent is absolutely un-
justified.”
The inherent flaw in
using bulldozers as an
instrument for enforc-
ing law and order has
been badly exposed
during the ongoing agi-
tation, Khan added,
stressing that the inten-
tion of those behind
this act now stands ex-
posed.

Forced on a four-year
short-term contractual
basis. The youth recruit-
ed under the scheme
will be known as “Ag-
niveers”. Yadav said
they will send the sup-
porters of the scheme a
list of retired soldiers
for employment. “We
want to cooperate with
those big people who are
making promises of giv-
ing jobs to ‘Agniveers’ in
their companies and of-
fices in future,” Yadav
said in a tweet on Tues-
day. They should prove
the veracity and seri-
ousness of the promise
by employing retired
soldiers immediately in
their companies so that
“Agniveers” could trust
them after four years of
their service, Yadav
said.
“Trust will be gener-
ated by ‘karni” (action)
and not by ‘kathni’ (state-
ments),” he added. In
another tweet, Yadav
said the BJP should also
release a list of its mem-
bers or supporters
whose children will be
opting for the scheme.
“It is better to set an ex-
ample than giving a lec-
ture. The BJP should
stop insulting the
youth,” he said.

dered action against

Lucknow: As campaign
for the June 23 Lok
Sabha bypolls to
Azamgarh and Rampur
seats came to an end on
Tuesday once again it
appears to be a bipolar
contest between the rul-
ing BJP and principal
challenger Samajwadi
Party.
While the BJP has
termed the elections
‘dharm Yuddh’ (reli-
gious war), winning the
two seats, both its
strongholds, is a matter
of prestige for the SP. A
loss here would negate
the gains made in the
recently-held state elec-
tions, and drag its per-
formance in the 2024
general elections.
With Mayawati’s BSP
being relegated to third
position and its strength
reduced substantially —
the SP hopes that it
would win the seats eas-
ily. Azamgarh, in eastern
UP, has a minority popu-
lation of about 15.58 per-
cent, Schedule Caste are
about 26 percent, and it
has a sizeable Yadav pop-
ulation. In the recent-
ly-held assembly elec-
tions, the SP swept all
the 10 seats of the dis-
trict. The SP’s alliance
with OP Rajbhar’s SBSP
and Apna Dal(K) worked
in its favour here.
The BJP is putting up
a fight in Azangarh, by
re-nominating Bhojpuri
singer and actor Dinesh
Lal Yadav (Nirahua). As
the SP has nominated
Dharmendra Yadav,
Akhilesh Yadav’s cousin
and three-time MP, the
national party has
raised the chorus of dy-
nasty politics. The BJP
hopes to create a parallel
Yadav leadership in the
region, and that the
BSP’s Muslim candidate
could pull some of the
minority and Dalit votes
away from the SP.
In Rampur, the SP has
a clear edge presently,
and is banking on an
identity base of Mus-
lims, Yadavs and Jats.
The Congress and the
Bahujan Samaj Party
will not be participating.
That means it will be a
straight two-way contest
between the SP and the
Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP). The SP’s candi-
date is Asim Raja, the
head of its Rampur city
unit. His BJP opponent
is Ghanshyam Lodhi,
who was with the SP till
just a month before the
assembly polls of March
2022. This seat has an in-
teresting electoral histo-
ry. Following a delimita-
tion, this seat was won
in 2009 by actress Jay-
aprada on an SP ticket. It
was a low scoring affair
with a poor turnout. The
vote was split four ways;
the BJP came last with
10 per cent.
In 2014, the BJP
surged to victory on the
crest of a ‘Modi wave’ by
gaining 27 per cent, most
of which came from the
Congress. SP-BJP bipo-
larity, though, was still
low; nearly a third of the
votes remained with oth-
er parties.
But in 2019, the SP
tied up with the BSP and
the Rashtriya Lok Dal
(RLD). This made the
contest severely bipolar,
with ‘Others’ getting
only 4 per cent of the
vote. While the BJP did
improve its perfor-
mance to a commend-
able 43 per cent, and had
Jayaprada as their can-
didate, the SP alliance
won with 53 per cent of
the popular vote.
Between 2014 and now,
two assembly elections
were also held, in 2017
and 2022. If we aggregate
the results of the five as-
sembly constituencies
which make up this Lok
Sabha seat, we see that
the SP won both times.
The BJP, too, has grown
in Rampur, but it is still
a clear second. The best
it ever got was 43 per cent
in 2019, which won’t be
enough to win this
by-election.
Thus, the most proba-
ble outcome is that the
SP will win Rampur
with around 50 per cent
of the vote share, with
the BJP close behind.
Gyanendra Kumar Shukla
Lucknow: The by-elec -
tion for the Azamgarh
parliamentary seat has
its own implications and
connotations for politi-
cal parties. While the SP
has to prove that its cred-
ibility is fully intact
among Muslim voters,
the Saifai family is going
through a tough test of
its hold in this bastion.
Whereas, the BJP is test-
ing the effectiveness of
its organisation and
caste-equations, the po-
litically decimated BSP
is eager to gain new
hope through this elec-
toral battle.
Azamgarh seat with
about 19 lakh voters may
have a majority of Mus-
lim and Yadav voters,
but a significant number
of Dalit, OBC and Most
OBC voters are also
present. Voting pattern,
in the last general elec-
tions and the recent as-
sembly polls, shows a
majority of Jatav and
Pasi voters still have af-
filiations with BSP,
while Lonia, Chauhan,
Kurmi, Nishad, Mau-
ryas and Rajbhar voters
strengthened BJP’s vote
base; although the first
choice of Muslim and
Yadav voters has re-
mained the SP. Political
observers assert that
BSP founder Kanshi
Ram had strengthened
his base here by inte-
grating several back-
ward and Dalit castes
into the party, because
of which BSP won the
LS elections four times
from here.
However, in 2019, due
to the alliance with SP,
this base was eroded
from BSP at a rapid pace.
As a result, for the first
time in 2022, it could not
win a single assembly
seat from the district.
Now in this by-election,
Mayawati has deliber-
ately fielded Shah Alam
aka Guddu Jamali. If
this experiment is suc-
cessful then it will help
to prove that the major
chunk of Dalit voters is
still fully committed to
BSP. At the same time,
this message will be de-
livered among Muslims
that not SP but only BSP
has the ability to defeat
BJP with the strength of
its core vote base.
Although BSP en -
gaged star campaigners
in the campaign, the par-
ty supremo kept herself
away from attending
any public meeting here.

knives it produces. “It is up to you to decide whom to

waiting for its sequel. And now
even before Pushpa 2 has gone on

that Rashmika’s character
Srivalli might get killed in the
sequel. According to the sourc-
es, Pushpa producer Y. Ravi
Shankar clarifies the rumours.
“That’s all trash,” he states, fur-

Until now we didn’t hear the story
to be fair and frank, so it’s not like
that, and all these are speculations.
At this point in time, you write
anything on that film, no one
knows anything about that, so they
believe in it. This is being carried
by other websites and TV
channels also, but it’s
false news.” So
Rashmika’s char-
acter does live in

his week I thought
I’d share a slight-
ly different kind
of article. While
my recent writ-
ing has been
about specific
skills development and
about bringing up children
with a certain ethos, this
week is about travel. Argu-
ably one of the most fun
pursuits, travel is also one
of those activities that are
as educative, as it is, im-
mersive. Students who
have the opportunity to
travel can learn and grow
immensely. How?
EXPOSURE
When one travels, one ex-
poses oneself to different
cultures, lifestyles, and
people. In sampling the
heritage, food, customs and
traditions of a people un-
known to oneself, one is
enriched and one becomes
knowledgeable about the
world. Travel to different
parts of the country and
the world endows us with a
new, fresh perspective. A
global viewpoint. It makes
us realize that in our eclec-
tic diversity, which is to be
preserved and celebrated,
resides shared, common
humanity that transcends
boundaries, races, religion,
language and creed. Travel
then can be the most liber-
ating, uplifting, evolution-
ary pursuit there is.
CREATIVITY
Through travel, one also
feels extremely inspired.
The sights, sounds, people,
and goings-on of a place
can compel us to express
our emotions in different
ways. From the most obvi-
ous travel writing to pho-
tography, writing poetry,
painting, and sketching;
there are infinite ways of
translating one’s experi-
ences of a place. Inspira-
tion is always readily at
hand when one is travel-
ling, and this can manifest
in countless creative forms.
KNOW ONESELF
Perhaps the greatest bene-
ficiary of travel is one’s
personality. Many happy
accidents can take place
along one’s travels. One
could, for example, fall in
love and find one’s life
partner. In another in-
stance, one could spot a
rare kind of art or craft
and realize it is that craft
that is one’s calling. From
tiny realizations about
oneself and one’s charac-
ter to big, life-changing
moments and incidents;
travel offers all this and
more. To travel then, is to
learn, completely.
I urge everyone, espe-
cially young children and
students, to try and travel
as much as possible. Never
let any excuses come in the
way of this. It isn’t neces-
sary to travel abroad or to
some unaffordable exotic
destination. We are all
blessed to live in a country
that is a veritable gold-
mine of diverse experi-
ences and cultures, wait-
ing to be discovered.
Sharing a little sample
of my travel writing, a
snippet from a trip to Kol-
kata. Happy reading, and
bon voyage!
‘MY CITY OF JOY’
The bread for the day
would come from four dif-
ferent places. A loaf from
Flury’s, one from Saturday
club, another kind from
Cookie Jar and a fourth,
from a fourth place. As var-
ied as this, were the experi-
ences that Kolkata, the Cal-
cutta of my childhood,
would present, each time
I’d be here, for at least a
month, every summer va-
cation. ‘Nani Badi’ was a
dichotomous contradiction
of fun and firmness, of
adrenalin and routine, of
merriment and meditative-
ness. Calcutta is, charm-
ing, addictive, chaotic, and
charismatic, the beating
heart of the holiday.
Camouflaged in all its
ivied glory, my grandfa-
ther’s hundred and some-
thing-year-old white &
green Victorian Bungalow,
5 Rainy Park, at the centre
of Ballygunge, the grandi-
ose backdrop of all the fes-
tivities. The house, a resting
place for my childhood rem-
nants, a place of respite, a
sanctuary of calm, an oasis,
only real! That my grand-
mother screaming at one
and all, constantly, sounded
to my ears, like soothing
music, given the unsavoury
tones of my own home back
in Jaipur; made this ritual-
istic visit to the ‘bungalow’,
even more cathartic. Here,
amid countless trips to the
races, to Flury’s, to Sky-
room, to Blue Fox, to the
Oberoi and the Taj Bengal,
to Saturday, Calcutta, Cal-
cutta Swimming, RCGC
clubs, AC Market and delec-
tables at Vineet Snack Bar,
to family lunches at ‘Kwali-
ty’ on Park Street, to muri
on Russel Street, to flying
radio-controlled aircraft in
the maidaan, to Badminton
in the house lawns, to being
introduced to The Doors
and the Carpenters and the
Beatles in my younger un-
cle’s upstairs Bar; I lived,
regained some modicum of
a childhood.
The moment I’d land in
this wonderfully eccentric,
poetic, talented city, the fog
would lift, the heart would
swell, and there’d be clarity
of mind and purpose. The
purpose is to be a child, to
have fun, to just, be!
My grandmother (nani)
has always been an author-
itarian, stern woman. But
she provided and contin-
ues to till today, the maxi-
mum emotional support to
me. When I was younger, it
was by way of pampering.
Boat pastries galore, Sand-
esh by the dozens, and lat-
er, be it my choice of sub-
jects, vocation or life part-
ner; my one constantly
unwavering source of
strength, to her, I owe at
least half my sanity! My
grandfather (nana), a dot-
ing figure whose expres-
sion of love I have known
largely through his sheer
generosity, indulgences, or
advice (albeit at times
questionable!); and that
whenever I’d want some-
thing, I’d only have to emit
as much as the suggestion
of a ‘cry’, and he’d order
my mum to procure the de-
sired item (a strategy espe-
cially effective in public)!
My younger uncle (mama),
the ‘cool’ one, the one to
look up to, idolize and emu-
late. The man who’d done it
all, from dj’ing to the Hima-
layan Rally! Whether it
was because he didn’t have
a son of his own, or be-
cause I am his sister’s son,
perhaps a combination of
the two, he has always
showered me with lots of
love, and lots of gifts. To
me, however, the former, I
cherish more. He made me
want to be cool, and it is so
important to have a ‘cool’
role model now isn’t it!
Calcutta, today Kolkata,
is much the same, though
much changed as well.
Now when I visit the city,
my mind grapples with the
vestiges of a time gone by.
It feels like ancient history,
not just the place but even
my own time spent here. It
is a strange feeling. It’s
like I’m looking from the
outside, in. It is vaguely
familiar. The smells, the
sights, déjà vu unlimited.
The emotion, however, re-
mains the same. No matter
what happens within fami-
lies, and to this city, Kolk-
ata to me has been, and
will always stay, my Cal-
cutta, my City of Joy!

MONSOON HAIR
CARE WITH CARE WITH
SAMEER SALMANI
s the monsoon
weather messes
with your beauti-
ful tresses, City
First brings you
some tips and sug-
gestions from ce-
lebrity hairstylist Sameer
Salmani on monsoon hair-
care. The air is laden with
high amounts of moisture
during the rainy season.
This excessive moisture
traps the dirt and grime on
your scalp as well as
on the hair shafts.
This makes the
hair follicles
weak and the
hair strands
coated. This is
the primary
reason for hair
fall during the
monsoon. Also,
the depositions
near the hair roots
become the breeding
ground of bacteria and
fungi which can aggravate
your dandruff troubles.
Celebrity hairstylist Sa-
meer Salmani gives tips on
how to take care of your
hair during monsoon.
PROTECT YOUR HAIR
FROM RAINWATER
The rainwater is often acid-
ic or dirty which can harm
your hair. If you cannot
avoid contact with your
hair with rainwater, wash
your hair immediately after
reaching home.
ESTABLISH A PROPER HAIR
WASH ROUTINE
Wash your hair at least
twice or thrice a week to re-
move the depositions from
your hair and scalp. Use an
antibacterial or antifungal
shampoo to prevent the
buildup of germs at the
roots of your hair.
CONSULT WITH YOUR
HAIRDRESSER FOR
HOME CARE
It is best to use a leave-in
conditioner to protect your
hair and prevent frizz and
dullness. You can also do a
hot oil massage before
washing your head. This
will help increase the blood
circulation in your scalp
making your hair stronger.
KEEP YOUR HAIR DRY
As the percentage of hu-
midity is already high in
the rainy season, you
should take extra care to
keep your hair dry during
this time. Excess moisture
can make your hair heavy
and limp. Use a clean, soft
towel to dry your hair after
a wash. Do not tie your
hair while it is wet as this
will damage the roots of
your hair.
KEEP YOUR HAIR SHORT
It is best to maintain a short
hairstyle if you are facing a
lot of hair fall during the
monsoon. Long hair gets
pulled and is likely to fall
out more. Trimming the
ends of your hair will also
remove the damaged or
split ends, thus making
your hair grow better.
ADOPTING A HASSLE-FREE
HAIRSTYLE
It is best to go for a mini-
mum styling hairdo during
the rainy season. The use of
heat and styling products
can make your hair weaker
and prone to breakage.
FOLLOW A PROPER DIET
Your diet has an important
role to play in maintaining
the health of your hair.
Make sure to eat a prop-
er diet that includes
green vegetables,
dairy products,
eggs, walnuts,
nuts, etc. to add
shine and lustre
to your hair and
promote its
growth. Drink
adequate water
too to keep your
body hydrated.
SHOW SOME EXTRA
LOVE TO YOUR HAIR
Use hair care activities
such as a hair serum suita-
ble for your hair type. This
will nourish your hair and
prevent frizziness, hair
breakage, etc.
Actresses Chandhini
Bhagwanani and Simran
Budharup share their ex-
perience with Sameer
Salmani’s hair care treat-
ments.
Chandhini Bhagwanani
says, “I have been wanting
to cut my hair and get a
nice hair transformation
for a very long time but my
profession as an actor re-
stricts the vast changes. So,
I wanted a salon that will
bring novelty to my look
while keeping my original-
ity intact. My friend sug-
gested Sameer Salmani. I
informed him about my
hair transformation needs.
When he asked for my
hair references, I asked him
to do what he thinks is best
for me. Initially, I was scared
but the moment I saw my
newly coloured and
trimmed hair, I was so hap-
py and excited. I had a bril-
liant experience and the
materials and equipment
used on me were of the lat-
est technology too. I would
recommend Sameer Salma-
ni to everyone.”
Simran Budharup says,
“I was looking for a colour
that would suit me for a
long time and every time
whatever I wanted, I
couldn’t get that. But this
time, I got the colour of my
wish and Sameer was really
good at his work. The envi-
ronment was chill and he
was able to understand
what I wanted. I love my
hair colour and it was a
very good experience!

TREND MIX
&
CITY INFLUENCERS SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ABOUT MASTERING
THE ART OF MIXING MAKEUP CLASSICS WITH MODERN TRENDS
MONICA PRABHAKAR
[email protected]
he art of make-
up has always
been an expres-
sion of more
than just a
flawless face.
Every look,
pronounces a story
mixed with colours,
cuts and creases.
Be it the bold state-
ment colour pop of glit-
ter from the ‘80s, red
lips or brown smokey
eye or cat-eye from the
‘90s topped with clear
gloss, every decade has
given a myriad of clas-
sics. Sure, these clas-
sics became a fad with
time but with the trend
wheel in motion, the
makeup classics are
back in the 2020s,
thanks to social media,
and its infinite love of
all things vintage. City
First talked to beauty
influencers and make-
up artists about mas-
tering the art of mixing
makeup classics with
modern trends.
T
EDWINA GOMEZ
B
eauty influencer and makeup artist spoke
about today’s clean makeup look inspired
by the 90s girl next door aesthetic and said,
“With so many different makeup & beauty
trends to look forward to, for me, less will con-
tinue to be more. Cream products have
made their way back that give
fresh flushed skin a glam look.
Adding a lip gloss with just a
touch of pigment and shim-
mer that’ll give your lips a
soft glow is also one thing
you must try.
Traditional makeup
doesn’t mean heavy make-
up, it can also be just kajal
& tinted lip gloss.
WALIYA SIDDIQUI
A
professional makeup artist shared
a few mixed looks to try this sum-
mer and said, “The classic bold winged
eyeliners have made a come-
back but with graphic looks.
Another colour trend to fol-
low is a mix of neon
shades like pink, blue,
and orange with
warm tone neutral
colours. Since the
emergence of Kore-
an beauty trends,
dewy skin with
pink blush and
pink lips is a hype
worth a try.”
UMA SHIL
A
beauty influencer,
talked about two
classic makeup trends
relevant today and
said, “From bold red
lips to the classic cat-
eye, there is certain
makeup looks that
span through ages.
And when it comes to classic makeup, a
smoky eye takes the cake. We can put to-
gether today’s graphic liner trend with a
light brown smokey eye to give a break
from the conventional heavy smokey eye.
There are limitless styles, but you
should create one that agrees with the
shape of your eyes.”
RAJNANDINI RAJPUT
A
beauty influencer,
talked about the
transition of smoke
and said, “When most
people think of the
term ‘smoky eye’, im-
ages of kohl-filled lids,
dark grey and black
eyeshadow come to
mind but in recent
times it’s replaced
with a more natural
and softer side of
smoke. Colours like orange, brown and blue
are the ones to look. While less dramatic, these
looks are just as impactful. Hence, I would rec-
ommend everyone to try this out.”
