Infusion Pump
Is a device used for the controlled administration
of intravenous fluids with accuracy and sterility.
Policy
The life care infusion pump must be used for all critical care
drugs which needs accurate delivery of medicine.
All drugs which are incorporated in IVF needs controlled administration.
The life care 5000 must be used to transfuse blood or plasma.
Procedure
lExplain the procedure to the patient.
lAssemble all equipment.

lEnsure that IV solution being prepared matches the physicians written order.
lMount the IV pump on the IV stand after checking the voltage 220 or 120.

SYRINGE PUMP
POLICY: PPG NUR 94
This policy and procedure guide and describes
the procedure of intravenous infusion or antibiotic
administration by using different types of infusion
pump in Mouwasat Hospital.
DEFINITION:
Device used to administer medications or IV
fluids slowly and accurately over a desired length
of time by using a syringe.
POLICY
Needs written orderto use syringe pump.
The medications and in fluids which needs to
be given via syringe pump to be given as per
guidelines to the medication.
TYPES OF SYRINGE PUMP:
TERUMO Syringe Pump
ASENA Syringe Pump
VICKERS Syringe Pump
ATOM Syringe Pump
TERUMO SYRINGE PUMP
LOADING A SYRINGE:
Use appropriate syringe.
Aseptic technique is strict while attaching the IV
line to the syringe.
TERUMO recommend LUER -LOCK connector
If the flange of the syringe is not properly
engaged in the slit, flow rate accuracy and
alarm functions cannot be guaranteed.
If the plunger is not firmly held against the slider
siphoning or reverse flow may occur.
PRIMING
Press and hold the purge switch until the
solution drips from the tip of the IV needle.
To clear the volume delivered, press the switch
for 1.5 seconds. Short buzzer sound and the
volume delivered are clear to 0.0
Connecting the IV line of the patient, and check
the setting of the flow rate and the start the
infusion by pressing the START button.
If you need to change the flow rate during
infusion, press STOP switch and change the
settings.
SETTING THE FLOW RATE
Check the indicator rate is on; if it is off turn the
switch to turn it on.
Enter the desired flow rate by using dial
method.
The flow rate cannot be set while the pump is
infusing.
The maximum flow rate is 999.9 and the
minimum rate is .1 ml.
COMPLETING THE INFUSION
Press the STOP switch to stop the operation.
Close the IV line.
Remove the syringe.
Turn the power OFF.
CLEANING AND STORAGE
Power off and disconnect power cord.
Clean the machine with appropriate chemical as
per the operation manual.

The syringe pump cannot be autoclaved and
use any dryer or similar device to dry it.
Avoid water spills.
Never store in hot or humid place.

Load the TERUMO brand properly.
Reset the syringe and verify the plunger
is held firmly against the slider.
Prime the IV line.
Open the IV line.
Press the START switch to restart
infusion.
ALARMS AND CORRECTIVE ACTIONS
The line is occluded Press the STOP switch to the buzzer.
Check for a kinked or clogged tubing.
Prime the line and make sure the plunger
is held firmly against the slider.
Eliminate the cause of occlusion.
Then restart the infusion.
Battery is running low Plug the pump into the AC or DC main as
soon as possible.
Cannot start Check the flow rate if it is 0.0 ml/u
Reset the flow rate (less than 300 ml/u)
Reset delivery limit.
Nearly empty or the syringe is emptyMake silence the buzzer.
Replace the syringe to continue the
infusion.
