JA ZZ MUSIC

What is Jazz Music? Is a type of musi c of African-American origin. It started in the early 20 th century with syncopated beats, improvised sounds, and a regular and forceful rhythmic pattern. The instruments that are commonly used are woodwind instruments, piano, and brass instruments.

CHARACTERISTICS OF JAZZ MUSIC

a. syncopated rhythms (making part of music off-beat) Jazz musicians like to emphasize the notes that they play on the “upbeats”, Syncopation may be affected by affecting normally weak beats in a measure, by resting on a normal accented beat, or by tying over a note to the next measure b. Polyphonic (producing many sounds simultaneously) c. Improvisation (creative activity of immediate musical composition) distortion of pitch and timbre (often utilize complex sounds)

1. RAGTIME an American popular musical style in 1890 until 1915; it has a steady syncopation and melody with a two-four time signature. Foremost exponents of ragtime were Jelly Roll Morton who was an American ragtime and early jazz pianist and who composed Frog I More Rag . Scott Joplin composed the popular Maple Leaf Rag , Solace , and The Entertainer . Joplin is also known as the “King of Ragtime.”

2. BIG BAND refers to a large ensemble form originating in the United States in the mid 1920’s closely associated with the Swing Era with jazz elements relying heavily on percussion, wind, rhythm section, and brass instruments with a lyrical string section to accompany a lyrical melody.

3. BEPOP a musical style of modern jazz which is characterized by a fast tempo, instrumental virtuosity, and improvisation that emerged during World War II. It is performed in a smaller group rather than a large ensemble of musicians. The focus of this kind of music is for the solo musician to show brilliance and harmonic knowledge.

4. JAZZ ROCK a music of the 1960’s and 1970’s bands that inserted jazz elements into rock music. Jazz rock is a mix of funk and R&B which stands for “rhythm and blues”, where the music used amplification and electronic effects, complex time signatures, and extended instrumental compositions with lengthy improvisations in the jazz style.

POPULAR MUSIC

What is Popular Music? Popular modern music or “pop music” is an ample and imprecise category of modern music not defined by artistic considerations but by its potential audience or prospective market. Is commonly preferred by a certain group of people.

1. BALLAD Is a light, simple narrative poem of folk origin, composed of short stanzas and adapted for singing. It is a simple song, especially one of sentimental or romantic character, having two or more stanzas all sang to the same melody. Our very own Martin Nievera a well known for his ballad such as “Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin”, “Be My Lady”, and “Each Day With You”.

2. ROCK AND ROLL Started with pride in 1950s, the characteristics of which are seen call melodies with accented beats. Rock and roll is considered a combination of white country music, rhythm, and blues and it is a twelve-bar structure with music of guitar, drums, and bass. One best example is the “Jail House Rock” sang and performed by the “King of Rock and Roll”, Elvis Presley.

3. ALTERNATIVE MUSIC Started in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It is a do-it-yourself type of music of different musical bands. Its definition refers to its distinction from typical rock music, which is expressed by distorting the guitar sound in a different and defiant attitude. The two most popular bands with this kind of music are R.E.M and Nirvana.

4. DISCO It derived from the word “discotheque”, which refers to night clubs people frequent in the 1960s and 1970s. Disco music is music for dancing or for encouraging to dance.
