PHARMACOPOEIA “ It is a supreme authoritative book, published by the authority of government of any country, which deals with the scientific facts and logical attitude of the rules and regulations of standardization of drug substances, containing directions for collecting drug materials from different sources, for preparing, preserving, compounding & combining of various drugs. ” The word pharmacopoeia is derived from greek word pharmakon = a drug poiein = to make

Father of homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia Dr. Carl W. Caspari (1798-1828) of Leipzig, Germany. He published the first homoeopathic pharmacopoeia in 1825. He published ‘ Homoeopathisches Dispensatorium fur Aertze and Apotheker ’ thereby giving the first idea of homoeopathic pharmacopoeias for physicians and pharmacists. Previously, medicines were prepared by extemporaneous pharmacy till 1825.

Types of pharmacopoeia Two types of Pharmacopoeia present: Official pharmacopoeia : The official pharmacopoeia is published by the government or any authority of the government of a country. Unofficial pharmacopoeia : It is published by person or pharmaceutical company other than the government.

FIRST RECOGNIZED PHARMACOPOEIA First recognized pharmacopoeia was DISPENSATORIUM OF VALERIUS CORDUS [1515-1544] [first edition 1546] This contain many old formulae derived from traditional sources including galen , avicenne , mesue & rhazes . Also contained a number of unique references to medicines, including the first accurate description of NUX VOMICA & many preparations of essential oils. The dispensatorium of valerius cordus was adopted by senate of nuremberg which gave rise to the work being known later as the ‘Nuremberg Pharmacopoeia’ It was well known in England in 16 th century, along with similar works such as The Grete Herball , an English translation of le grant herbier en Francoys [1516-1520], sourced which was itself from first herbal compiled in French, Arbolayre [c.1485].

History & development of homoeopathic pharmacopoeia f Hahnemann was not only the inventor of homoeopathy, but also the pioneer of ‘ Exprimental Pharmacology’ He preserved Pharmacology in : Materia Medica Pura. Organon of Medicine. The Chronic Diseases,Their Peculiar Nature & Their Homoeopathic Cure. Though he never wrote any separate book on, Pharmacopoeia his scattered records regarding the basis of homoeopathic preparation of drugs & medicines, served as the basis of homoeopathic pharmacopoeia in future.

TYPES OF HOMOEOPATHIC PHARMACOPOEIA: German homoeopathic pharmacopoeia [GHP] :1825 Every new edition of GHP contains new developments. In 1979 edition, there was inclusion of new direction method such as spectral analysis. Dr.Williamr Schwabe of Leipzig founded homoeopathic central pharmacy to manufacture & sell homoeopathic medicine in 1866. Homoeopathic pharmaceutical published in 1872 as ‘pharmacopoeia homoeopathic polyglotta ’ GHP Supplement 2005,edited by Stephen Benyunes & published in Dec.03, 2005. GHP 2 nd Supplement; edited by Stephen Benyunes & published in Jan 17, 2006

British Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia: First edition of the BHP was published by British homoeopathic societyin1870 & followed by the publication of 2 nd & 3 rd edition in 1876 & 1882 by E.Gould & son of London. New edition of BHP published by British association of homoeopathic manufacture in 1993 & 1999. First section of book contains back ground information to manufacture of homoeopathic preparation, including abbrevations , analytical methods, reagents & general regulations for manufacture of homoeopathic medicine. The Monographs are set out in the second part.

Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of USA [HPUS]-1897: It was published in 1897,by the American instituteof homoeopathy with the help of Otis Clap & son inc.Agent ,Boston, USA , under name of ‘pharmacopoeia of American institute of homoeopathy.’ In 1901,a second edition of the pharmacopoeia of the American institute of homoeopathy was published.
