Case Study Reckitt is one of the leading FMCG organizations globally, operating in the space of Health, Hygiene & Nutrition and home to some of the amazing brands like Dettol, Lizol , Harpic, Durex, Veet , amongst others. Reckitt India is one of the largest markets of Reckitt Globally. It engages in manufacturing for its various unique brands through its 4 plants in the States of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. In the previous quarter, a strategic decision was made to sell one of the 4 units ( Selling Plant ) to an External Manufacturing Organization (EMO – Buyer ) who would continue the production of our unique brands. Along with the production for Reckitt India, the buyer would have the opportunity to use the facilities to cater to external markets. This Selling Plant consists of state-of-the-art technology and has in the past year generated a total revenue of roughly INR 500 crores, including domestic sales and exports. The factory has a large workforce of between 500 and 1000 employees, out of which roughly 60% are unionized workmen and roughly 15% are Officers and Managers, enrolled as permanent employees. The rest of the employees (roughly 25%) are temporary workmen. The Union is affiliated to an External National Party, and their Long-Term Settlement ( LTS ) is due for renewal in the coming year, when the proposed sale is planned. Upon, completion of the sale, the Buyer will absorb all the workers and be responsible for the settlement of all grievances, lawsuits, and settlements. While this decision is made in the best interest of Reckitt’s long-term future, it is cognizant of its primary leadership goals of caring for employees first. It, hence, becomes very important to understand the complexities that may arise out of the said decision. At this point this, the sale has not been communicated to the employees of the concerned factory and will continue to remain a confidential mandate till the sale is finalized. Project Safe Passage: Enabling Seamless Transition During a Plant Sale

Case Study While there are multiple complexities involved, and we urge you to explore all the related dimensions associated with the decision made, we are providing you with the THREE KEY CHALLENGES that we foresee: How do we manage the Sale of the Plant? This includes the transfer of workers to the Buyer of the plant, associated attrition and replacement hiring, along with continuity of benefits, and standard of working. 2. How do we manage the Union and Unionized workers? This includes negotiations on LTS with Buyer, possible agitation and strikes, and legal challenges of liaising with the Government for approvals and lawsuits. 3. How do we ensure sustained cooperation through the transition period? This includes continuity of production during the transition, redressal of employee queries and apprehensions and employee motivation, and management of associated vendors and contractors. In your submission, Reckitt is looking forward to: A comprehensive, step-by-step execution plan taking account of the key complexities. A detailed communication and action plan for stakeholder management and crisis management. We encourage you to even redirect our focus to, perhaps, even more pressing issues, should you identify any.
