LEARNING OUTCOMES
•List examples of metals and non metals
•List the properties of metals and non-metals
•List the uses of metals and non-metals in daily
life
•Compare and contrast metals and non-metals
based on their physical properties
•Relate the physical properties of metals and
non-metals to their uses in daily life
04METALS AND NON-METALS
•Elements can be classified into metals and
non-metals,
•All metals exist in solid state at room
temperature except mercury (liquid)
•Non-metals exist in solid liquid or gaseous
state at room temperature
•Examples of metals: Iron, aluminum , copper ,
lead
•Examples of non metals : Carbon , Iodine ,
Bromine , Sulphur
05PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF METALS
AND NON-METALS
•Metals and non-metals can be differentiated
by the following physical properties:
b)Luminosity : Shinny appearance
c)Ductility : Ductile can be stretched out like
long wire
d)Malleability : Can be hammered or rolled into
thin sheet
e)Tensile strength : Support pressure or load

METALS DIFFERENCE NON-METALS
Shiny surface Luminosity Dull surface
Ductile Ductility Not ductile
Rolled or hammered
into thin sheet
Malleability Cannot be forged
High Tensile strength Low
Good conductor Heat conductivityPoor conductor
High Melting point and
boiling point
Low
High Density Low
Good conductor Electrical
conductivity
Do not conduct
electricity except
carbon

NON-METAL PHYSICAL PROPERTY USE
Carbon (graphite)-Soft and smooth
-Good conductor
-Lead of pencils
-Electrodes in
electrolysis and dry
cells
Carbon (diamond)-Hard Drill bits for cutting
stone
Neon gas and
krypton
-Poor conductor Lights used for
billboards
Chlorine -Acidic Kill germs in drinking
