Macrognathia

General information It refers to the condition of abnormally large jaw often affected in this case giving rise to a condition where the bone protrudes

Aetiology Pituitary gigantism paget's disease of bone Acromegaly that is hyperpituitarism in adults

Clinical features Prognathism – mandibular protrusion or prognathism is common occurrence mandible – mandible is measurably larger than normal gummy smile – there is much "show" when the patient smiles, so that there is a so-called gummy smile. This is due to the upper jaw being too long large Ramus which forms less steep angle with body of mandible there is prominent chin button

Management Osteotomy – resection of portion of mandible to decrease the length, followed by orthodontic treatment
