I heard that you had a hard time understanding Gerund. Let me help you to learn and further understand it!
GERUND is a verbal that uses the present participle of a verb (the ing form) but acts as a noun. .
Officer Judy, How we can determine the functions of Gerund in a sentence?
That’s a nice question. Even though gerund is a noun, Gerund can act as a subject, subjective complement , direct object , object of the preposition and appositives.
Officer Judy, isn’t it confusing? We really had a hard time understanding it. Please give us examples.
Acting is fun. (Gerund as the subject of a sentence)
I love acting. (A gerund as the direct object of the verb love)
I got this bruise from fencing . (gerund as the object of a preposition)
The best form of exercise, walking , is also the least expensive. (Walking is the gerund in this sentence and acts as an appositive explaining the best form of exercise.)
My favorite hobby is gardening . (Gerund as Subjective Complement . “My favorite hobby” is the subject, and gardening is its complement.)
Now that I explained already the functions of Gerund, there’s nothing to worry about. You will surely learn how to use them correctly. Most of my friend hate this lesson before, but now they are better! Just give yourself a try! Okay. Maybe I should try.
