What is Communication? Process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior. Four types of communication are verbal, non-verbal, visual and written communication.

Oral communication skills include tone, accent, pronunciation etc. which are needed for confident and effective communication. What is health communication? Definitions : According to Healthy People 2010 guidelines , health communication encompasses the study and use of communication strategies to inform and influence individual and community decisions that enhance health. Health communication encompasses the study and use of communication strategies to inform and influence individual and community knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) with regard to health and healthcare.

Components of health communication Components: It uses strategies to inform and influence public to make choices about their health. Health communication is used synonymously with health education, It contributes to all aspects of disease prevention and health promotion, Helps in interpersonal and group interactions in hospitals and other clinical institutes. Health messages through public campaigns can help in changing the social climate in order to encourage healthy behaviour , create awareness, change attitudes, and moticate individuals to adopt recommended behaviour . Messages are spread though channel such a mass media, print media, social media and face to face conversations.

a. Functions of Health Communication The functions of health communication are: Information Education Motivation Persuasion Counselling Health Development and Organization

a. Functions of Health Communication Information : The main function of health communication is to provide scientific knowledge and information to people about health problems. Information are easily accessible to the people so that we can remove or eliminate social and psychological barriers of ignorance, prejudice and misconceptions. Education : Education plays a very important role in prevention and oriented approach to health and disease problems. Health education can bring about changes in life styles and risk factors of disease. The main aims and objectives are: To encourage people to adopt and sustain health promoting lifestyles and practices; To promote the proper use of health services available to them; To arouse interest, provide new knowledge, improve skills and change attitudes in making rational decisions to solve their own problems; To stimulate individual and community self-reliance and participation to achieve health development through individual and community involvement at every step from identifying to solving them.

a. Functions of Health Communication (Cont.) Motivation : Motivation includes the stages of interest, evaluation, decision making, etc. For proper success of programme implementation at individuals and society at large, motivation assist in passing from the stake of awareness and interest to the final stage of decision making and adoption of the new ideas. Persuasion : Persuasion is a conscious attempt by one individual to change or influence the general benefits, understanding, values and behavior of another individuals in some desired way. It changed life style as it is employed deliberately to manipulate feelings, attitudes and beliefs. Counselling : Counselling is a process that can help people understand better and deal with their problem and communicate better with those with whom they are emotionally involved. It can improve and reinforce motivation to change behavior and helps to reduce or solve problems. Health Development and Organization: Communication is an important dimension of health organization. It is a means of intra and intersectoral coordination. There are vertical communications which can be downward or upward that include top administrator to the beneficiaries.

b. Special characteristics of health communication. ACCURACY : The content of health communication is valid and without errors of fact, interpretation, or judgement . AVAILABILITY: The content (whether targeted message or other information) is delivered or placed where the audience can access it. Placement varies according to audience, complex information in message, and purpose, ranging from interpersonal messaging and social networking signs. BALANCE: The content presents the benefits and risks of potential actions or recognizes different and valid perspectives on the issue. CONSISTENCY: The content remains internally consistent over time and also is consistent with information from other sources. CULTURAL COMPETENCE: The design, implementation, and evaluation process that accounts for special issues for select population groups and also educational levels and disability.

SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF HEALTH COMMUNICATION EVIDENCE BASE: Relevant scientific evidenced that has undergone comprehensive review and rigorous analysis to formulate practice guidelines, performance measures, review criteria, and technology assessments for telehealth applications. REACH: The content gets to or is available to the largest possible number of people in the target population. RELIABILITY: The source of the content is credible, and the content itself is kept upto date. REPETITION: The delivery of/access to the content is continued or repeated over time, both to reinforce the impact with a given audience and to reach new generations. TIMELINESS: The content is provided or available when the audience is most receptive to, or in need of, the specific information. UNDERSTANDABILITY: The reading or language level and format (including multimedia) are appropriate for the specific audience.
