The Electric Flat Iron The first of the household heating devices to receive universal recognition!

Operation of Electric Flat Iron What is an Electric Flat Iron?

Operation of Electric Flat Iron The Electric Flat iron is a domestic appliance was the first of the household heating devices to receive universal recognition. From the power source at home, electricity flows through an AC line cord passes through a thermal fuse and a temperature control going to the heating element.

Operation of Electric Flat Iron Heating element is insulated by a mica insulator from the body and it heats up the sole plate for the purpose of removing wrinkles from fabric. With the heat and the weight of the ironing plate, the fibers are stretched and the fabric maintains its new shape when cool. Some materials such as cotton require the use of water to loosen the intermolecular bonds.

Schematic of Electric Flat Iron Heating Element

Modern irons for home use can have the following features: a method of setting the iron down a temperature control dial (usually marked with types of cloth) a thermostat to ensure maintenance of constant temperature

Modern Electric Flat Irons for home use can have the following features: an electrical cord with heat resistant Teflon insulation a cord control/anti-burn control/energy-saving control/cordless iron a steam features

Types of Electric Flat Iron 1. Automatic Electric Flat Iron 2. Non-automatic Electric Flat Iron

Types of Electric Flat Iron 1. Automatic Electric Flat Iron This type of an electric iron use THERMOSTAT to regulate temperature as an automatic switch.

Types of Electric Flat Iron 2. Non-automatic Electric Flat Iron This type of Iron does not regulate its temperature. When the temperature of the plate is too high, it is manually switched off and when the temperature of the plate is less, it is manually switched on.

Parts of Electric Flat Iron External Parts Internal Parts 1. AC Line Cord 2. Selector Knob 3. H andle 4. Body/Case 1. Pilot Lamp 2. Thermal Switch 3. Thermal Fuse 4. Pressure Plate 5 . Heating Element 5. Soleplate 6 . Thermostat

Parts and Functions of Electric Flat Iron 1. AC Line Cord It is used to connect the unit to power source.

Parts and Functions of Electric Flat Iron 2. Selector Knob It is a rounded dial used for adjusting or controlling and indicate the amount of heat or fabric required in ironing different types of fabrics.

Parts and Functions of Electric Flat Iron 3. Handle It is allowing a user to hold the iron without being burned, also holds the controls for the thermostat and steam release.

Parts and Functions of Electric Flat Iron 4. Body/Case It is used to protect the internal parts of the flat iron.

Parts and Functions of Electric Flat Iron 5. Soleplate It is a base metal that serves as fabric pressing part.

Parts and Functions of Electric Flat Iron 6. Pilot Lamp It is housed in the cover plate of the electric iron. One end of the pilot lamp is connected to thermal fuse, while the other end is connected to the heating element. A shunt resistance is provided across the pilot lamp which assists in providing a voltage drop. The shunt is designed to provide a voltage drop of 2-5 volts .

Parts and Functions of Electric Flat Iron 7. Thermal Switch It is used to select the amount of heat required in ironing different types of fabrics. Contact Point

Parts and Functions of Electric Flat Iron 8. Thermal Fuse It is a safety protective device used to protect the unit from damage when overheating and short circuit occurs.

Parts and Functions of Electric Flat Iron 9. Pressure Plate This plate is generally called the top plate as it follows the shape of sole plate.

Parts and Functions of Electric Flat Iron 10. Heating element It a form of nichrome wire that assembles properly inside the flat iron to provide heat.

Parts and Functions of Electric Flat Iron 11. Thermostat It is a device which makes and breaks the connection between two points depending on temperature. This enables the user to control the temperature of the sole plate.

Quiz Direction: From the given pictures, name the parts of an electric flat iron. 1. 3. 2. 4.

Assignment: What is the material used in a thermostat ? Explain that material. How a thermostat maintain the temperature of electric flat iron? Reference: Compendium of notes in grade 9.

“ Always show appreciation. What is taken for granted will eventually be taken away. Then you end up missing most what you least appreciated.”

Activity 1-2.1 Schematic Diagram of an Electric Flat Iron Directions: Use your compendium of notes as reference in drawing the schematic diagram. Use short bond paper and pencil in performing this.

Criteria Points Complete diagram with labels. 10 With 1 missing component or label 8 With 1 missing component and label 6 With 2 missing component or label 4 With 2 missing component and label 2 With more than 3 missing components or labels
