Multimedia and
Information and
Communication
Technology (ICT)
WEEK 1 ACTIVITY
By: Kim John C. Villaruel BSMT 1-Aldebaran

Rich Content in the Online
Environment and the User
Experience
Humans interact with technology in many ways with
the use of desktop application, internet browser,
handheld computers, cellphones, and others.
Technology serves, assists, and cooperates with
humans to complement enrich normal activities (for
example, education, health, communication, services,
business, etc.) with minimal explicit concern or effort
on the human part.

MULTIMEDIA AND ICT DEFINED
MULTIMEDIA is a combination of text, animated graphics, video and sound
delivered to you via electronic means. It is what appeals to users for
entertainment, learning and research.

MULTIMEDIA AND ICT DEFINED
IT or information and communication technology (ICT) covers any
communication device or application including radio, television, cellular
phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems, as
well as various services and applications.

ICT DEFINED
Information technology (IT) is defined as
the study or use of electronic equipment,
especially computers for storing, analyzing
and sending out information.
Communication technology (CT), is the
process of sending, receiving and exchanging
information.

USES OF MULTIMEDIA
EDUCATION
Multimedia is use to create and produce computer-based
training (CB) materials and courses, including online and CD
based encyclopedias. It has been observed that learning is
faster and easier with a properly assembled multimedia of
voice, video, graphics, and texts.
INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGY OPENS UP THE
WAY WE TEACH AND LEARN.
Interactive technology helps create opportunities for
communication. It can encourage teachers and students to
communicate more, share and discuss ideas, and collaborate
with each other. Examples of multimedia learning include
watching a PowerPoint presentation, watching a pre-recorded
lecture or reading a physics textbook.

USES OF MULTIMEDIA
ENTERTAINMENT
Multimedia use is very much in any modern movies and
animations to develop special effects and virtual worlds.
Computer games also use enormous multimedia content and
features to make them more relevant. Interactive multimedia is a
term applied to multimedia applications that allow users to take
part, contribute and participate in online games.
MULTIMEDIA IS WIDELY USED IN THE
ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY. IT IS ESPECIALLY
USED TO DEVELOP SPECIAL EFFECTS IN MOVIES
AND VIDEO GAMES TO PROVIDE A GREAT
ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCE FOR PEOPLE.

USES OF MULTIMEDIA
MEDICINE
Multimedia is very important in medicine to train future
doctors and practitioners, example, in micro and virtual
surgery. Multimedia can also simulate the effects of virtues
and disease to human body to clearly find and develop ways
of preventing them.
THE ROLE OF MULTIMEDIA IN THE FIELD OF
MEDICINE IS INCREASING AT A TREMENDOUS
RATE.
Medical images and videos are used for the documentation
and monitoring of progression of diseases as well as the
response to treatment strategies.

USES OF MULTIMEDIA
BUSINESS
Business applications in multimedia are presentation, training,
marketing, advertising, product demos, catalogues, networked
communication and voicemail. The presentation is very useful in
many aspects of work and life.
BUSINESS- POWERPOINT PRESENTATION, THAT
USES ALL KINDS OF MEDIA, ARE ABLE TO
EFFECTIVELY CONVEY INFORMATION TO
CLIENTS, SUPERIORS.CO-WORKERS OWNERS, AND
THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

USES OF MULTIMEDIA
MATHEMATICS AND
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
In the area of mathematical and scientific research,
multimedia is primarily used for modelling and simulation.
For example, looking at a molecular model by a scientist of a
particular substance and manipulate it to arrive at a new
substance.
Multimedia is used to simulate and model various situations
that would otherwise be difficult to grasp in real time, as in
the case of an erupting volcano or tornado, wherein after
effects can be presented to the public. Mathematical
equations and formulas that can be presented as visual
models can easily be viewed by the use of multimedia.

USES OF MULTIMEDIA
GOVERNMENT
Multimedia is used by governments around the world to
disseminate information, procedures, and regulations for their
citizens and visitors. Multimedia also finds uses in military,
engineering, and many other fields.
MULTIMEDIA INFORMATION IS IMPORTANT FOR
DIGITAL GOVERNMENT BECAUSE IT IS OFTEN A
MORE NATURAL COMMUNICATION MODE FOR
PEOPLE THAN TEXT. IT IS THUS IMPORTANT THAT
GOVERNMENT BE RESPONSIVE TO THE NEEDS
AND DESIRES OF CITIZENS BY PROVIDING IT.

USES OF MULTIMEDIA
MULTIMEDIA
AND
INTERACTIVITY
Multimedia applications can include various types of media used together (for example, text,
images, video, audio, animation etc.). The primary characteristic of a multimedia system is the use
of more than one kind of media to deliver content and functionality. A multimedia application
normally involves programming code and enhances user interaction where the computer responds
to the user's actions.

TYPES OF RICH AND MULTIMEDIA
CONTENT
IMAGES

make the
content more
visually
appealing.
Common
image file
format used are
JPEG, PNG, GIF,
and TIFF.
TEXT

contents express
specific
information
VIDEO

add more
attraction to
users. Common
digital video
formats are
Flash, MPEG,
AVI, WMV, and
QuickTime.
AUDIO
aids more
attraction with
the user, it can
also be
added as a
background.
Common audio
formats are MP3,
WMA, Wave,
MIDI, and
RealAudio.
ANIMATION

can include
interactive effects
which allow users
to interact with the
use of mouse or
keyboard. Common
animation formats
are FLV, SWF, and
ActionScript codes
for
animated and
interactive effects.

SOURCE OF
VIDEOS

Personal and Professional Videos1.
- are created using your home video. Even your digital
camera or cell phone with video capability can be used
as a video source for your projects.
2. Online Video Clips
- are videos available for purchase from
the Internet. You can pay for the right to use these
clips.
3. Computer-Generated Videos
- are videos made with the use of
computers. You can use create them using program that
come with your operating system.

Video Files - a video file is a kind of file used as a means
of storing digital video files on a computer.
.avi - Audio Video Interleave (AVI) file, one of the most
popular video container formats developed by Microsoft,
can be played using various video players.
fv - Flash Video file is a video container format using
Adobe. Flash layer to distribute video over the Internet.

.mp4 - MP4 video the (MPEG-4) is a multimedia container
format used to store digital audio and audio as defined
by MPEG.
.rm - Real Media (RM) file is a media file container
format developed and used by RealPlayer.
.vob - DVD video Object file is a DVD-video container
format based on MPEG-2 Program.

AUDIO AND
VIDEO FILE
FORMATS

Audio Files - Audio file format is a kind of file used as a means
of storing digital audio data on a computer.
.aif - Audio Interchange File (AIF) format is an audio format
developed by Apple similar to a .wav file. Playable using Apple
QuickTime and Apple iTunes.
