ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY, ETHOLOGY, HISTOLOGY AND ENDOCRINOLOGY. Programme : BSc degree Subject: ZOOLOGY Semester: IV Session No: Topic: TERRESTRIAL HABITAT-desert biome Created by: NAZIYA BEGUM
DESERT BIOME: It is a type of sterile terrestrial biome having very dry weather with low or no rainfall. It is characterized by very extreme temperature, scarcity of water, dry weather and dust stoarms . Example:Thar of India, Gobi of China, Sahara and Kalahari of Africa etc.
It is broadly classified into 2 types based on atmosphere temperature of night: Hot desert: They have high temperature Example: Sahara, Gobi and Thar Cold desert: They lie at higher altitude, have very low temperature. Example: Ladakh and Scandinavian desert
Desert adoptation : Desert dwellers show adaptation: To live without water. To get water. To conserve water. To tolerate heat and high temperature.
Adaptation for water conservation: Impervious skin present. Nocturnal habit. Burrowing habit. Aestivation. Prescence of Urecotelism . Absence of sweat glands.
Adaptation to get water: Getting water from Food. Through metabolic activity. Migration in search of water. Presence of water cells.
Adaptation to tolerete heat: Absence of subcutaneous lipids. Aestivation. By fluctuating their body temperature. Tolerance to dehydration.
Adaptation in terms of protection: Nocturnal habit. Burrowing nature. Ability of swift running. Presence of longer legs to keep their body away from hot sand. Presence of flap of skin in the nostril , ears, eye lashes to protect from dust. Presence of protective coloration and spiny covering.
