The Ocean At The End Of the Lane Neil Gaiman

About the author Born in England in 1960 Author of short fiction, novels, comic books, graphic novels, nonfiction, audio theatre, and films. Winner of Nebula Award, Goodreads Choice Awards, Hugo Award, and (a lot) more. He wrote this book for a friend as a short story, but it ended as a novel.

Characters Boy (Narrator). Lettie Hempstock. Ginnie Hempstock (Lettie’s mother). Old Mrs. Hempstock (Lettie’s grandmother). Ursula Monkton/Skarthach of the Keep. Mom, Dad and Sister.

Story The story begins with the protagonist returning to his childhood home. He remembers his childhood while sitting in the duck pond in The Hempstock's farm.

The real plot begins when the narrator remembers the opal miner that rented a room in their house. He steals the family car and commits suicide, allowing a being from another reality into his.

The main character seeks help form Lettie, the neighbor, and her family. She agrees to help and asks the boy to accompany her on a journey to bind the spirit. She tells him to not let go of her hand, but, for a second, he does, and something lodges in his foot. Later, he pulls out a worm, but a part of it remains inside.

The next day, his mother starts a new job and a woman named Ursula Monkton will take care of him and his sister. The boy dislikes her immediately, and later realizes the worm was a part of her. She quickly ingratiates herself with his family, winning over his sister and seducing his father, while he is pushed away by them.

One night, the boy escapes during night and goes to the Hempstock’s farm, were the Hempstocks take care of him and remove the wormhole, witch Ursula left as an escape path back to her world. Lettie and the boy confront Ursula, and she threatens her with calling the “Hunger Birds” if she doesn’t leave this world. Ursula doesn’t listen and Lettie brings the Birds, who destroy Ursula.

After eliminating Ursula, the Birds don’t leave, because they want to eat the boy’s heart, as a part of Ursula is still inside him. Lettie takes him to the farm through the ocean witch she brought inside a bucket. While inside it, the narrator knows everything, but the knowledge fades away as he comes out of the pond. The Hempstocks promise to take care of him, but the Hunger Birds begin to eat his world to force him off the property. The narrator attempts to sacrifice himself to save his world and the birds tear his heart out, but Lettie jumps between him and the hunger birds, saving him.

Old Mrs. Hempstock threatens the birds, calling them Varmints, after they nearly killed Lettie. They leave peacefully. Ginnie takes Lettie’s body to the ocean and places her inside it, saying that she will come out after she had rested and healed, but he forgets this, and thinks she went to Australia. Then the story comes back to the present. The narrator discovers that he had come because Lettie wants to check on him while resting.

His memories of the past soon begin to fade as he forgets the past events once again, asking the Hempstock woman to tell Lettie he said "hello" if she contacts them from Australia. He then leaves the farm and goes back to his sister’s house
