Health screening services in community pharmacy Ms. Gadakh Archana S. Asst. Professor PES Modern College of Pharmacy , for Ladies , Moshi

Introduction Screening is describes as the rapid tests or examinations to identify people with unrecognised disease, so that prompt treatment can be made to stop the disease from progressing. Screening tests can find diseases early, when they're easier to treat.  E.g. Hypertension and Hyperglycemia control

Basic Health screening tests Standard Health Screening : Glucose level test (marker for diabetes) Blood cholesterol level test (total cholesterol level) Measurement and evaluation of blood pressure BMI (measures height weight ratio) Assessment of cardiac risk Urine analysis (tests for elevation of protein, blood, etc. in urine 2) Premium Health Screening : Blood glucose level test (marker for diabetes) level Blood cholesterol level test (total cholesterol Measurement and evaluation of blood pressure) BMI (measures height weight ratio) Pulmonary function tests (lung capacity, and screens for possible disease) Liver function tests (for abnormal liver function) Urine analysis (tests for protein, blood in urine and possible kidney disease infection).

3) Executive Health Screening : Blood glucose level test (diabetes marker) Blood cholesterol level test (total cholesterol levels) Blood pressure measurement and assessment) 12 lead ECG test (measures the electrical conduction of heart) Renal profile (blood test to check kidney functions) Bone profile (blood test to assess calcium and phosphate) Full blood count (measures RBCs, WBCs, hemoglobin etc.) Pulmonary function tests Urine analysis

IMPORTANCE OF SCREENING It helps to detect the health problems early which are easier to treat e.g. certain types of cancer, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, cholesterol. Early detection of problem lowers the risks of serious complications . It helps in creating awareness and understanding of your own health. It helps to confirm that you are living a healthy lifestyle . It helps to provide timely treatment and most effective treatment. In case of people who have family history of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, diabetes, it provides effective ways of prevention. Screening not only save lives but also improve quality of life by preventing onset or reducing complications of chronic diseases.

REQUIREMENTS NEED TO BE FULFILLED BY THE COMMUNITY PHARMACIST FOR PROVIDING SCREENING SERVICES 1. A separate area for screening services should be made available in the pharmacy. Alternatively, an independent patient counseling area can be used for screening services. 2. The instruments required for screening services should be available in the pharmacy. 3. The instruments used for screening services (clinical measurements) need to be calibrated for accuracy, precision from time to time. 4. Pharmacist involved in these activities should have adequate knowledge and practical skills to handle and use the instruments for clinical measurements. 5. Pharmacist should have adequate training and expertise in clinical measurement activities. 6. For each clinical measurement activity, a standard operating procedure (SOP) should be available and be strictly followed. 7. Records of measurement should be maintained. 8. Pharmacist should maintain confidentiality of the patients.

SCOPE OF SCREENING To reduce the incidence of a condition by identifying and treating its precursors. To reduce mortality by early detection and early treatment of a condition. To reduce the severity of a condition by identifying people with the condition and offering effective treatment. To increase choice by identifying conditions or risk factors at an early stage in a life-course when more options are available.

Measurement of B.P.

Obesity

Blood Cholesterol

The standard "cholesterol test" is a blood lipid test in which a sample of blood is drawn and then analyzed in a lab to measure. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol. Desirable result: Less than 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/ dL ) High-density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol. Desirable result: Greater than or equal to 60 mg/ dL Triglycerides , a type of fat blood the body uses for energy. Desirable result: Less than 150 mg/ dL Total cholesterol , the total amount of cholesterol in the blood based on your HDL, LDL, and triglycerides numbers. Desirable result: Less than 200 mg/ dL

Blood Glucose Measurement

Lungs or pulmonary function tests This test are used to assess how effectively lungs are functioning.
