Theyareknownasthehumanherpesvirusesandareherpes
simplexvirustype-1,herpessimplexvirustype-2,varicella-zoster
virus,cytomegalovirus,Epstein-Barrvirus,Humanherpesvirus6
,Humanherpesvirus7andmostrecently,Kaposi’sSarcoma
herpesvirus.
Itprimarilyspreadsbyskin-to-skincontact.Itistreatablebutnot
curable.

Herpesviruses
They are noted for causing latent infections .
These are evelopedviruses (100nm in
diameter) with an double-stranded linear DNA .
The 5 important human pathogens are:-
•Herpes Simplex Virus type-1 and type-2
•Varicella-Zoster Virus
•Cytomegalovirus
•Epstein-Barr Virus _mononucleosis) .

1. HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS
The HSVis an infection that causes herpes . Herpes can appear
in various parts of the body , most commonly on the genitals or
mouth . 2 types :-
•HSV-1:-Primarily causes oral herpes , and is generally
responsible for cold sores and fever blisters around the
mouth and on the face .
•HSV-2:-Primarily causes genital herpes , and is generally
responsible for genital herpes outbreaks .

ENZYMEANALYSIS.
HSV-1isspreadbycontact,usuallyinvolvinginfectedsaliva,
whereas
HSV-2istransmittedsexuallyorfromamaternalgenitalinfection
toanewborn.
Growthcycleproceedsrapidly,requiring8-16hoursfrom
completion.

HSV-2
It is contacted through forms of sexual contact with a person
who has HSV-2 . An estimated 20% of sexually active adults in
united states are infected with HSV-2 .

SYMPTOMS OF HSV
A. OROPHARYNGEAL DISEASE :-
•Symptomatic disease
•Most frequently in small children (1-5 yrof age)
•Involves the buccal and gingivialmucosa of mouth
•clinical illness: lasts 2-3 weeks
•Symptoms include fever , sore throat , vesicular and ulcerative
lesions , gingivostomitis, and malaise

B. KERATOCONJUNCTIVITIS
HSV-1 infections in the eye produce severe keratoconjunctivitis .
It appears corneal ulcers .
HSV-1 can also cause corneal blindness .
