What is a Sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that expresses a
complete thought.
Declarative Sentence
•A declarative sentence makes a statement. It ends
with a period.
It states a fact or an opinion.
Ex.
The NES was released in 1985.
Interrogative Sentence
•An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends
with a question mark.
Have you ever played Super Mario Brothers?
Exclamatory Sentence
•An exclamatory sentence expresses a strong
feeling. It ends with an exclamation point.
How cool was that!
Imperative Sentence
•An imperative sentence gives a command or makes
a request. It ends with a period.
Stop playing video games and do your homework.
How to tell the difference
between Dec. and Imp.
Ask: Does it make a statement? Fact or
opinion?
If yes, it is a declarative sentence.
Ask: Is it telling you to do something?
If yes, it is an imperative sentence.
