Objectives: Define Pentecost Memorize the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit

THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES

APOSTLE originated from the Greek word “ apostello ” which means “person sent.”

APOSTLE were sent by Jesus to “proclaim the Gospel to every creature.”

It is during the feast of the Pentecost that the apostles received the Holy Spirit.

We will discover the source and inspiration of Bro. Richie, the one who gives us the power to choose and do what is right, and our salvation, Jesus Christ.

WHAT IS PENTECOST ? PENTECOST comes from the Greek word “ Pentecoste ” meaning 50th day. Pentecost Sunday is one of the most prominent feast days in the Christian calendar. It is often referred to as the “BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH”.

WHAT IS PENTECOST ? The holiday is celebrated on the seventh Sunday after Easter which is also fifty days after Easter, hence the name. Since its date depends on the date of Easter, Pentecost is a moveable feast, that is, the date is not fixed.

WHAT IS PENTECOST ? It marks the day when the HOLY SPIRIT descended upon the Apostles, who had been living in fear for fifty days following the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

On Pentecost, the HOLY SPIRIT came down visibly on the Apostles. He gave them the power to speak in strange tongues to the crowds that came to Jerusalem for that Feast. He also transformed them, from selfish and timid men into giants of courage and faith.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit © Seomra Ranga 2013 www.seomraranga.com These Gifts of the Holy Spirit are given as gifts to help us in our lives right now and to help us to live as followers of Jesus.

Wisdom The first of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit gives us the grace to see things as God sees them. At Confirmation we receive the strength to be wise, the sense that we put a proper value on people and things. We are helped to see that people are more important than their job or profession. We begin to see the truth of the motto, “Love people, use things”. Don’t love things and use people. © Seomra Ranga 2013 www.seomraranga.com

Understanding This is the gift which helps us to know how people are feeling deep down inside. If they come to us when they are in trouble they know that we will not misjudge. If they are different to us, they will be sure we won’t laugh at them. The Holy Spirit will help us understand what people cannot say, especially when they are so troubled or so confused that they cannot think clearly. © Seomra Ranga 2013 www.seomraranga.com

Counsel This is the gift of the Holy Spirit which helps us to decide which way to act in difficult situations. It gives us the strength to see both sides of the picture accurately when we are making major decisions in our lives. Just as some people are gifted with a high I.Q., Counsel gives us a high J.Q. (Judgement Quotient). One can be very intelligent and still make silly mistakes. © Seomra Ranga 2013 www.seomraranga.com

F ortitude Courage is not freedom from fear; it’s being afraid but still carrying on. This gift gives us the strength to do what is right even when we know that people will oppose us. It helps us to speak the truth even when our words are sure to make life unpleasant. We need courage when we’re in danger of losing our friends - or even our lives. We all need to be brave at times. © Seomra Ranga 2013 www.seomraranga.com

Knowledge Knowledge, as a gift of the Holy Spirit, is not just knowing facts but knowing the meaning behind the facts. This is the gift which helps us to discover God’s will for us and which helps us to know more and more about God Himself. It makes us aware that God is kind and forgiving and gives us the strength to be just like Him when people are unkind to us or refuse to forgive us. © Seomra Ranga 2013 www.seomraranga.com

Piety Piety helps us to understand what is holy in this world of ours; not only in obviously holy things and places like chalices and churches, but holiness in people; and not only in obviously holy people like Mother Teresa of Calcutta, but in ordinary people who try to live decent lives despite their limitations, whether they are rich or poor, young or old, black or white, educated or ignorant, from the city or the country. © Seomra Ranga 2013 www.seomraranga.com

Fear of the Lord This final gift of the Holy Spirit helps us to see God’s presence everywhere we look. When we examine a little ladybird or a caterpillar, when we see the sun set behind the mountains or drop into the sea, when we take a close look at the nail of our little finger, we should be able to say, “This is unique, Lord. Thank you”. © Seomra Ranga 2013 www.seomraranga.com

Wonder and Awe in God’s Presence This final gift of the Holy Spirit helps us to see God’s presence everywhere we look.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit The Gifts of the Holy Spirit bear fruit in our lives © Seomra Ranga 2013 www.seomraranga.com

The first Christian communities were faithful to the teaching of the apostles, the common life of sharing, the breaking of bread, and the prayers.

In obedience to our “Mater et Magistra ” the Church who encourages us to receive the Holy Eucharist invite your family and friends to actively participate in the Mass.
