Trichogramma are essential for controlling moth species. Trichogramma are tiny wasps that kill the eggs of Lepidoptera by laying one or more of their own eggs inside the much larger eggs of Lepidoptera . E ndoparasitoids of insect eggs. Trichogramma spp
Bollworms cotton. Stem borer of rice. Leaf folder of rice. Borers of sugarcane. USES
Trichogramma chilonis. Trichogramma dendrolimi Trichogramma ostriniae REARED SPECIES
Rice moth ( Corcyra cephalonica ) Angoumois grain moth ( Sitotroga cerealella ) Oak silkworm ( Antheraea pernyi ) Host used for trichogramma rearing
Jowar grain, free from insecticides, are coarsely milled and broken into 4-5 pieces in a milling machine. The broken grains are heat sterilized at 100°C for 1 hour to eliminate the residual population of stored product insect . 2.5 kg of broken grain are then transferred to plastic Corcyra cages along with 5gm yeast(regulate larval growth ). After mixing the ingredients, Corcyra eggs are sprinkled on top of the mixture. Steps in Rice moth production
Cover the box with lid, label the date of inoculation keep these boxes in racks protected by ant pans. Favourable temperature for rearing is (28 +/- 2)ºC and Relative humidity, 75% +/- 5% The moth starts emerging on 40-45 day .Collect moths inside m oth aspirator.Transfer the moths to egg laying chamber Provide cotton soaked 20% honey+ vitamin E solution as adult food in the egg laying chamber. Collect the eggs daily. Contd..
Clean the eggs further by passing through different size sieves to 10, 15 and 40 meshes Discard the moth after 4 days. Utilize the Corcyra eggs for Trichogramma production (or) host culture Contd..
The egg pasted on the cards are sterilized by exposing the cards under UV light for 10 minutes . The eggs on cards are exposed to adult Trichogramma for 24 hours at ( 28+20)ºc. Parasitized eggs start turning black on the 3rd day after parasitization . The emergence of adults generally takes places after 3-6 days after blacking of the eggs. Rearing of Trichogramma
Size – 18*9 cm Contains –(18000- 20000) parasitised eggs . 15 to 25 Tricho -cards are required to be released in one hectare sugarcane area. TRICHO CARD
