8 Sundays of the great lent Done by: Shorn vinsent Class: 8 A

INTRODUCTION The 8 Sunday's of the great lent is arranged to reflect on the miracles performed by Jesus Christ. After the 8 Sunday's Easter comes.

1 st Sunday : Wedding of Cana The 1 st Sunday or the wedding of Cana was the first miracle in the great lent. Jesus Christ turned the water to wine In the wedding of Cana the old wine wasn’t sufficient enough for the guest So , Jesus Christ made a new wine for them or the new law. The new law that Jesus gives through pouring out of his blood is sufficient to make every one more than content and satisfied . No body in the wedding new how he did it and it was a miracle Christ told his servants (in Greek text DIAKON which means deacons.) we also see the presence of St. Mary the Mother of God. Jesus addresses his mother as ‘O Woman’. In the Gospel reading on Kothine Sunday she says: " Do whatever He tells you" . In this passage we can see the role of saints; they stand with us in prayer (in this case taking a particular need of lack of wine to the Lord) and directs us to follow Jesus.

Second Sunday : Healing of the leper Second Sunday is also called G arbo Sunday, in syriac Garbo means leper. According to the gospel of Mathew , jesus came down from the mountain side after the sermon on the mount, a large crowd of people followed him . And he saw a leper and reached h is hand to him and touched the man and said “I am willing,”he said. “ be clean!”, the leper was cured. Reading before holy qurbana . Reading after holy qurbana .

THIRD SUNDAY O F THE GREAT LENT In the Syriac Orthodox Church, we celebrate the third Sunday of Great Lend as 'Paralytic Sunday'. On this Sunday we commemorate the healing of the Paralytic who was lowered into a house. In this passage we see Christ teaching us that he has authority to forgive sin. There is also another important teaching for us in this passage. In the Gospel Reading (Mark 2: 5) we read : "When Jesus saw  their  faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your  sins are forgiven."  The Gospel does not tell us anything about the faith of the paralytic. The Gospel does not even tell us if the Paralytic had the ability to speak or if his ability to speak was lost. Our Lord healed the Paralytic seeing the faith of those four men who carried the Paralytic. In one sense we were all paralytics, not capable to move on our own when we were little. Our parents and our Godparents carried us to Christ to receive baptism. They carried us to receive the Holy Communion. In their prayers for us they carried us to God. In our faith the saints and St. Mary the Mother of our Lord also carry us to our Lord through their prayers. We also have a responsibility to carry others to Christ, by prayer for them and by ministering to them.

Fourth Sunday of the great lent: Sunday of the Cananite woman     The Canaanite woman is also a symbol for the Church gathered from among the Gentiles . the Gentiles who were first even driven away, later were advanced to the rank of sons and were deemed worthy of the Bread, the Body of the Lord; while the jews , thinking that they were being fed by the crumbs, that is, the minute and insignificant details of the letter of the law . “ Tyre ” means besieged”, “Sidon” “they who hunt”, and “Canaan “made ready by humility”. Therefore the Gentiles, who were besieged by evil in that the demons were among them hunting for souls, were also made ready by humility. For the righteous were made ready for the heights of the kingdom of God

Fifth Sunday of the great lent :Healing of the Crippled Woman- Kipiptho It took 18 years for a crippled woman who was a regular church-goer to be accepted, loved and healed from her infirmities. The religious leaders could not and did not do anything for her. But the first day Jesus saw her, he called and healed her thus freeing her from shame and sickness. The temple priests were upset that Jesus had healed her on Sabbath day, to which Jesus out rightly called them “You hypocrites”. He did so because they would untie their animals and care for them on Sabbath Day, but refused to rejoice when a human being was freed from satanic bond and healed. The religious leaders saw healing as part of a doctor's profession for money. So practicing one’s profession on the Sabbath was prohibited. They could not see beyond the law to Jesus’ compassion in healing the crippled woman. Actually healing is the work of God. And the root cause / source of all the illness sprouted from the bosom of the Satan, the serpent who cheated Adam and Eve, the first couple. In a nut shell, we should be in Jesus and Christ should be within us. We should say goodbye to all our hypocritical church attendance and faithless non-Christian way of life from Monday to Saturday. No human effort can eradicate the sickness of cancer, heart failure, diabetes, HIV and Aids etc. Even if Science can find a solution, then some other more deadly sickness will emerge. So the only solution is to look up to Jesus who was crucified for our infirmities and to crush the face of Satan. I saw Christ in action healing a bent woman in the parking lot of Tim Hortons in the intersection of Elsmere and Birch mount one Sunday after Mass. One literally crippled woman was held by her hand and led by an old man to their car from Tim Hortons . The man was very patient, smiling and concentrating all his attention on each and every step to avoid any fall or injury for his companion. They came to the car and very carefully he made her sit on the seat. Then he closed the door and went to the driver's side and they drove away. In all this time, her face was beaming with love and there was not an iota of bitterness, pain or any sign of her sickness. I was literally dumbfounded and happy to witness such a scene. I strongly believe that Christ is still in action through this kind of millions of compassionate living human beings.

Sixth Sunday: The Sixth Sunday of the Great Lent or Healing of the Blind Man- Sameeyo On the Sixth Sunday of Great Lent, the Syriac Orthodox church commemorates Jesus healing a blind man on Sabbath by applying clay on his eyes and asking him to wash his eyes in the pool of Siloam. In this Gospel passage, Jesus tells us, "I am the light of the world". In this passage we also see the Blind Man professing his faith. He tells Jesus, "Lord I believe." He proclaims to the Pharisees, "I was blind, but now I see". Let us also use this day to renew our faith and confess our faith "Lord I believe" and let us proclaim to the world, "I was spiritually blind, but now I see."

Seventh Sunday of the great lent or palm Sunday : Hoshanna On the Sunday before the Resurrection ( Qyomto ), the church commemorates the   triuphant entry of Christ into Jerusalem  on a donkey. The service commences with a procession in the church with the clergy, dressed in their vestments, carrying olive and palm branches. so this Sunday is called as   Palm Sunday . The crowd especially the children welcomed him into Jerusalem by shouting  ' Ushana '  ( Hoshanna ) meaning ' Save Now ' in Hebrew, in recognition of the Messiah -ship of Jesus. So this Sunday is also known as ' Ushana '. ' Ushana ' is not only a cry for salvation, but at the same time is a declaration of praise .
