seemtohavebeenroundtheSivaTemple
inthefieldsinfrontoftheTalukoffice.There
arevariousinscriptionsonstonesinthefields
neartheTemplewhichchieflyrelatetowarriors
whowerelgilledinlocalfightsorindefending
cattlefromraiders.
Thepresenttownwasbuiltin1618A.D.
(SalivahanaSakha1539)andwasoriginally
125yardsfromnorthtosouthand127yards
fromeasttowest.Theoriginalprophecyis
thatitwouldlast500years.

astrologersselectedtheyearPingala,Vysaka
month,Suddha10th,Uttaranakshatra,5%
ghadia,Chandramuhurta,oftheSalivahana
Sakha1539(1618.A.D.).Theastrologersafter
calculatingthenakshatrafoundoutthatthe
townwouldcontinuetobeprosperousfor500
years.
“Theythenlaidouttheboundariesofthe
fortandthepresenttown.Theastrologers
werethengrantedsomeinamsfortheirlabours.“
ThehistoryiswritteninTeluguonpaper,
but,duringthePlague,Ifoundacadjan
historyinaKomati’shouse,andhadpart1ofit
readtome.Itcontainedthissamestorybut
wasmorefullindetails.Ihavenotbeenable
togetitsince,probablyitperishedduring
disinfection.OneitemIrememberwasthe
descriptionofwhythechiefselectedthenew
site.Hehadbeenouthuntingwithhisfollowers
andreturningneartheDinnehesawahare
huntingtwowilddogsandexclaimedtohis
followers,“Seehowstrongmustbethesoilof
thisplacewhenitbreedsharesthathunttheir
enemies,thedogs.Thisistheplacetobuilda
cityandrearapowerfulrace.”

palliistobenoted,asitratherupsetsMr.
Gribble’sinterestingderivationofthenameas
Cupid’stown. .
Graduallyafortwallgrewuproundthe
townandthiscanbetracedevennowinparts.
ItranbehindBoyastreetandApparaostreet
-—thegateinthewallnearApparao’swellis
thesiteofanoriginalsmallposterngate,or
bolthole,incaseoftrouble,—thenbehindthe
Musjid,-—-thefortwallhavingbeencutthrough
heretomakeanewroadin1904,—thenbehind
Dhakinepetstreetandacrossthesiteofthe
existingPostofficealongwhatisWEast
KammastreetandsototheVishnuandSiva
templeswhichstandoutsidewherethecity
wallsran.Thiswallwasmaintainedbya
grantoflandfromGovernmentandwasso
continueduntilquiterecentyears.
Whatisnowknownasthefortwasa
centralstrongholdinsidetheTownwalls.There
wereoriginally1Lbastionsbutonlyonenow
remains,onwhichissituatedthesmallGan
gammashrine.Anotherbastionwasnearto
Sepoystreet,throughwhichthatstreetwas

cutin1904,andanotherneartotheoldcutchery
building,nowarowofshopsoppositeBysani
AcchannaChetty’sshop.Agadatastreetmarks
wherethefortditchranandwasonlyfilledin
duringthetimeofMr.Gribbleasafamine
reliefwork. '
Theearliestreliablehistoryrelatingto
MadanapalliisthatitwasunderaPoligar
duringtheVizianagarkingdomandwasan
appendageofPunganur.NagappaNayarfoun
dedthefamilyandfoughtfortheVizianagar
Raja,KrishnaRayal,atthetakingofGnrram
konda,forwhichhewasgivenaJagirof16
villages,paying10,000pagodasandkeeping
l,000peons.
WhenGolcondaprovedvictorious14villa
geswereresumedandthePoligarwasleftto
pay421pagodasandallowedtokeepnopeons.
In1642ShahjioftheMahrattastookboth
PunganurandMadanapalli.rI‘heMadanapalli
PoligarmadetermswithShahjiandwasgiven
PunganurwhereasthePunganurPoligarfled
toHyderabadandmadetermswiththeNizam
~whogavehimbackPunganur.Howthetwo
settledtheirdisputeisnotrecordedbutpresu

mablyPunganurPoligarmusthavecometo
hisown,andprobablytoMadanapallialso,
whenGolcondaagainassumedswayoverthe
GurramkondaDistrict.
In‘1713AbdulNabiKhan,NawabofCud
dapah,onhiswaytoBaraMahaltookMadana
palliandPunganurandgavethemtohisDiwan
SankarajiPantwhorentedoutMadanapalliand
anothervillagetotheMadanapalliPoligar.
In1755MadanapalliandPunganurpassed
totheMahrattas,thePunganurPoligarhaving
beenkilledbyMadhurao.In1766thetwo
fortspassedtoHyderAliandin1772the
Mahrattasagainseizedthem,tobepromptly
retakenbyHyderAliin1774.ThePunganur
PoligarfellatWandiwashandwithhimmany
ofthetroopsofbothPoligars.In1785Tippu
expelledthesonfornotpayingkistbut
reinstatedhimandagainexpelledhimin1791
andheagainrecoveredpowerin1799.Since
1774Madanapallihadbeennominallysubordi
natetoPunganur,but,theMadanapalliPoligar
generallymanagedtodomuchashepleased
sidingsometimeswiththeNizamandsometimes
withHyder.

In1766MirSaib,brother-in-lawofHyder
Ali,secededtotheMahrattasandbysurrender
ingSeratothemgotfromthemthegovernorship
ofGurramkonda.Nosoonerwasheinpower
thanhebetrayedhistrusttoHyderandwith
Gurramkondawentthewholesub-division.
In1769theMahrattasagaintookGurramkonda
andthesub-divisionwascededtothemby
‘treatyin1772,but,nextyearatthedeathof
MadhuraoitagaincameunderHyder.
Kummer-ud-dinwasputincharge,andhe
itwaswhogaveaSannadtotheMadanapalli
Poligarwho,however,shortlyafterrevolted
fromTippuatthetimewhentheNizam,the
MahrattasandtheEnglishcombinedtoattack
Gurramkondain1791.Thelowerfortfellon
November9toCaptainReid,but,wasretaken
byGhajiKhanandwasagaintakenin1792by
theEnglish,who,however,failedtomakeany
impressionontheupperfortwhichheldouttlll
thepeaceof1792,whenthesubdivisioninclud
ingMadanapallipassedbytreatytotheNizam.
ForhisdesertionofTippuin1791the
PoligarwasgivenaSannadbyCaptainReid
for16villageshehadseizedatthetimeofhis

secession.Ontheretakingofthefortby
GhajiKhan,hewasallowedtoretainsixof
‘themandwasleftundisturbedinMadanapalli.
ButafterMadanapallipassedin1792to
theNizamhewasstrippedofthesevillages
andremainedquiettill1799whenfurther
troublesseemedtogivehimachanceagainand
heoncemoreseizedthe16villages,but,held
themonlyashorttimeasin1800theWhole
districtwascededtotheBritish.Thoughhe
madeprompttermsofsubmissiontothenew
power,MajorMunrowhoheldverydecided
viewsastothecharacterofPoligarsandthe
waytotreatthem,atoncedeprivedhimofall
butMadanapalliitself,holdingthathehadno
goodtitletotherest,andfurtherimposeda
heavypeishcush.
TheadventoftheEnglishandestablished
authoritybrokethespiritoftheoldPoligar
andheshortlyafterwardsdiedleavingno
directissue.
SomeideaofMadanapallilifebeforethe
comingoftheEnglishmayperhapsbeof
interesttothepresentgeneration.Unfortu
natelyHinduHistoryisalmostsilentuponthe

generalstateofthepeopleatanyperiodbut
theendlesspettyforts,watchtowersandwalled
villagesdottedeverywherethroughoutthe
DivisionandthesurroundingDistrictareelo
quenttestimonyofthemiserablelifethepoor
andtheagriculturalistsled. _‘
Nowherebeyondthereachofthevillage
wallswaslifesafeandeventhenkeenwatch
andwardhadtobekeptagainstmarauders
everreadytoswoopdownuponthecattleor
thecropsoftheunprotected.Thatthiswas
thestateofthispartofthecountryfromvery
earlydaysisprovedbythestoneinscriptions
dottedaboutthefields.Thesetellofwarriors
whodieddefendinghomeorcattleagainst
marauders.
Thepresenceoflargecriminalgangssuch
astheErikalasandtheSugalisisalsotestimony
ofthelackofacontrollingpower.Theold
recordsoftheThuggyDepartmentgivean
ideaoftherisksatravellerraninmaking
eventheshortestjourneyandinnopartwas
Thuggyworsethanintheseuplanddistricts.
Europeantravellers,andFrenchCatholic
FathershaveleftintheirMemoirsandAnnual

Tavarnierdescribeshisvisitin1650toa
CuddapahPoligaratthetimeofacriminal
trial.Thesentencespassedwerethatthefirst
prisonershouldhavehishandsandfeetout
offandbethrownintoafield,thesecondto
havehisstomachopenedandbethrownintoa
drainandtheotherstobedecapitated.
Hedescribestheryotsasdressedinnothing
butaloinclothandafraidtoownproperty
lesttheybetorturedtoshewmoreproperty
whichtheydidnotpossess.
SirThomasMunrotellsusthatinthe
CededDistrictstherewere30,000armed
rufliansemployedbythePoligarstocollect
anythingtheycouldfindwiththeryotsor
traders.

co-religionistsdescribeastateofsavagerythat
itisalmostimpossibletorealise—murder,rape,
rapineandwholesaleslaughterofallalikeand
utterdestructionoftownsfillpagesofhis
accounts.

LaterwehavetheaccountsofthePortu
gueseinvadersanditmustbeadmittedthey
rivalledtheirfoesintheirbarbarities.
UnderMohammadanlawthefarmerwas
allowedasmuchaswasrequiredforhisown
supportandforhisfamilyandforseed,therest
waslandtaxandshouldgotothepublictreasury.
AtthetimeoftheEnglishtakingposses
sionoftheCededDistrictstherewereasmany
as61separatetaxes,someofthemofveryold
origin.SomeofthoseofChikkaDevaRaya
ofMysorewereexceptionallyingenious—not
ably2percentextrataxoneverythingalready
leviedtoprotecttheTreasuryagainstbad
coins.Taxeswerecollectedontempleoffer
ings,onumbrellas,ondancinggirls,onimmoral
persons,onbrides,andonbridegroomsaccording
totheirmeans,onpriests,onsatanisandon
safelyreturnedpilgrims.Afeealsowaslevied
oneveryarticleboughtorsoldatashopand
forthepurposeasmallarmyofmenialswere
keptwhohadtoliveonwhattheycouldextort
fromtheshop-keepers.
OneoftheFrenchfathersdescribeshow
theMahrattarulerstookfourfifthsinkindof

allcropsandifthiswasnotpaidtheyemployed
mostbrutaltortures.Hegivesdetailsof
atrocitiesatGingeethatwillnotstandtrans
lationfromtheFrench.
SeeingthatMadanapalliwasthevictimof
allalike,Mahommadan, Mahratta,Mysore
SultanandPoligar,itslifecanwellbepictured
fromtheabovedescriptionsallofwhichrelated
toplaceswithin150milesofthetown.Allof
thepresentgenerationshouldtrytorealisethe
reallifeoftheirnativetownandDistrictbefore
thePaxBritannicaandnomoreusefullittle
bookcanbefoundthanMr.R.Sewell’s“India
beforetheEnglish”fromwhichIhaveborrow
edlargelyinthisdescription.Thereisno
school,orlibrarythatwouldnotbethebetter
forthepossessionofthisbook,for,without
suchaccountsitishardtopicturewhataweak
governmentmeanstothe‘poorandpresent
eventsinPersiaandinArabiaandMacedonia
showthatwhatwaswritten150yearsagois'
equallyapplicabletodaywherethereisno
strongcentralGovernmentandwherereligions
bigotryrunsrife.

CededDistrictsandin1801firstvisited
Madanapalliandbeingcharmedwithits
climatedecidedtobuildahouse.Thishouse
stoodonthesiteofthesittingroomofthe
Sub-Collector’spresentbungalow.From1801
hewasoftenatMadanapalliuntilhewent
homein1.807anditisfromthistimethatit
begantobeaEuropeanresidence,thoughit
hadbeenvisitedbeforebyCaptainReidand
evenearlierthanthatbyCatholicMissionaries
ofPondicherrywhofinallyestablishedthem
selvesatGhattu.
VerylittlementionofMadanapalliis
foundinMunro’slettersbutsomeveryinterest»
ingunprintedlettersaretobefoundicopied
intoalargeleatherbookintheCuddappah
Collectorateandmanyofthesewerewritten
fromMadanapalli. I
TheonlylocaltraditionsofMunrothatI
couldlearnarethathewaspossessedofextra
ordinarilylongarmsreachingbelowhisknees,
but,historydoesnotsupportthis,alsothat
whenhecampedonhisfirstarrivalinthe
tankbedundertheBasaniKondaaheavy

rainstormcameonandtopreventhistents
beingblowndownhecutdownshrubsand
bushedhistentandthatthesesproutedand
hencethestronggrowthof“Vavili”treesin
thetank.
TheKammasweretheearliestsettlersofthe_
townandhavealwaysbeenconspicuousfortheir
hardyconstitutionsandunswervingloyaltyto
thereigningpower.Fromthefirstappearance
oftheBritishtheygavethemheartyassistance
andhavealwaysbeenonmostfriendlyterms
withthem.
From1800onwardstherehasbeenlittle
todisturbthesteadygrowthofthetownand
onlyafewyearsstandoutfromtheothers.In
1803thecountrywasdevastatedbyasevere
faminetobefollowedin1804byaterrific
cycloneinwhich1000tanksaresaidtohave
breachedinthesub-division.In1866occurred
afaminewhichlasted2yearsandleftthe
countrypoverty-stricken.Itwasduringthis
timethatmanyoftheroadsofthedivision
wereconstructed.In1874asecondcyclone
overtookthedivision,20inchesofrainfalling
in3daysonOctober20th,21stand22nd.

Thedamagetotankswasagainenormous,
manyofwhichhadonlyrecentlybeen
restoredorbuiltintheFamineyears.In
thisyearLacchiredditankbreachedandit
wasonlyrestoredin1906totheimmense
benefitofthewellsofthetown.
In1876beganthe“GreatFamine”which
lasted2yearsduringwhichnotadropofrain
fellandthetotaldeathrateforBritishIndia
hasbeenestimatedatfiveandahalfmillion
people.Thewholeof_theCuddapahDistrict
wasspeciallyaffectedandthewholeDistrict
andtheSub-Divisioninparticularwas
dottedwithFamineReliefCamps.Many
ofwhichwereunderBengalofficerslentfor
theworkandin1877Madanapallicampwas
inspectedbySirRichardTemple.
DuringthisFaminemostoftheroads
knownasFamineRoadsweremadeandmany
irrigationworkswerebegunandneverfinished.
Hugeearthenbundsaretobefounddotted
aboutthejungles,lastingmemorialsofsuffer
ingsuchaswithimprovedcommunicationsand
extendedirrigation'itisunlikelywillbeever
againendured.

Mr.CooperwasinchargeoftheRelief
worksinandroundMadanapalli,underthe
personalsupervisionandcontrolOfMr.Gribble,
andtohimIamindebtedforthefollowing
recollections.
Whentheworkswerenewlyopenedthose
indistressflockedtotheminsuchlargenum
bersthattheroadshadtobedividedinto
sectionswithregularcampssuppliedwith
sanitaryestablishmentsandwaterarrange
ments.
Theworkswerethemakingofnewroads
andthesupplyofmaterialsfortheexisting
ones.Thenewroadsincludedthatfrom
MadanapallitoNimmanapalliandfromthe
ChinaTippasamudramroadtojointhePunga
nurroad,alsotheMushturtoVayalpadroad
andMadanapallit'oPentsapad.
Thedistressamongthe,poorerclasseswas
soseverethatyoungchildrenwereeverywhere
abandonedbytheirparentsandguardiansand
lefttodieontheroads.
ToprovideforthisalargeLangana
Kannah(Poorhouse)wasopened2milesfrom
MadanapalliontheAngalluroadandplaced

underMr.Engledow,who,itmaybenoted,
wasinrecognitionofhisworkappointedafter
theFaminetothePoliceDepartment.
ThegeneralsupervisionofallPoorHouses
wasunderCaptainMoneyoftheBengalStaff
Corps.
DuringMr.Cooper’sdailyinspectionshe
pickedupnumbersofabandonedchildrenwhom
hetendedandhandedovertothePoorHouse.
Asthefamineincreasedinintensityandbefore
sufficientfoodcouldbesuppliedfromoutside
bytheGovernmentthestarvingpeopledevour
edtheleavesOfthe“Devadaru”andthepith
ofthealoe—bothofwhichtheycookedintoa
kindofbroth.Thesebroughtonavirulent
kindofdiarrhoeawhichcausedenormousnum
bersofdeaths.Corpsesweretobefoundon
everyfurlongofroad—men,women,andchild
reninaperfectstateofnuditybeingdevoured
inbroaddaylightbypacksofjackals.Hund
redsofjackalsweresoshotbyMr.Cooperand
thenwiththeaidofthecoolieswhowerewith
himtheremainsweregivensuchburialaswas
possiblewiththesoilbakedhardasarockand
thecooliesunfitforprotractedwork.

Suchdeathswerespeciallyseverealong
theroadstoGurramkondaandtoTsudam.
Mr.Mathews,nowLocalFundEngineer
Kistna,hassuppliedmewithsimilardetailsof
thefamineinRayachotiwhichwasaggravated
byasevereoutbreakofconfluentsmall-pox
whichwassovirulentthatahugepitfilled
withquick-limewaskeptinconstantuse.
Toillustratehowepidemicthediseasewas
hementionedthecaseofoneoftheFamine
officersreadingtheFuneralServiceoverthe
graveofachildwhohaddiedofconfluent
small-poxandbeinghimselfstruckdownwith
itHeisburiedinthelittlegraveyardoutside
theRestHouseatRayachoti.
Ihavedealtsomewhatlargelywiththis
famineasitisnowthecustomtoregardevery
failureofamonsoonasafamineandonlyby
comparingwhatiswithwhatwascanthebene
fitsofimprovedcommunicationsandaproperly
elaboratedFamineCodebefullyrealised.
In1891—1892anotherperiodofscarcity
visitedtheDivisionduringwhichMrJ.N.
Atkinson,theSub-Collector,repairedallthe
oldFamineRoads.Itwasatthistimethat

LordWenlockvisitedMadanapallitoinspect.
Twolaterperiodsofscarcityoccurredin1897
and1900,but,theycannotbeclassedwiththe
1866or1877Faminesanditisdoubtful
whethertherewereanydeathsfromactual
starvationintheSub-Division.Itmaybe
notedthatinnoneoftheselatterfaminesdid
thesufierersthroughoutallIndiareceiving
Governmentrelieftotaltothenumberofdeaths
ofthe1877faminethoughthelatterwasal
mostconfinedtotheMadrasPresidencyand
theDeccan.
In1903fromNovember12thto17thover
18inchesofrainfellwiththeconsequencethat
manyhousesandmostofthebackyardwalls
felldownandriverswereinsuchhighflood
thatcommunicationwascutoffwithChinna
TippasamudramstationandtheTalukOffice
andHospitalcouldonlybereachedbyswim
ming.Over400tankswerebreachedinthe
sub-divisionespeciallyinRayachotiwherethe
rainfallwasover20inches.
ThegoodpointaboutthefloodsinMada
napalliwasthatitenabledmanystreetstobe
straightenedandwidened,andpeople,when

theybegantorebuild,putupbetterhousesand
betterwalls.Thisfloodwasalsoinstrumental
ingettingmostOfthebridgesbuiltontheroad
tothestationincludingthelargeoneinthe1st
mile.
OnJanuary15th1904thefirstcaseof
PlagueoccurredinthetOWninahutinBarber
street,justbelowthefortwallonwhichthe
MissionSchoolisbuilt,anditspreadwith
greatrapidity,thewholetowngoingwildwith
fearsothattheinhabitantsstreamedawayby

tunatefirealsotookplaceintheworstaffected
partofthetown,nowknownasBarberstreet,

burntoutandwassubsequentlyentirelyre
modelledwithwidestreets.
Toprovideagainstfuturecongestionthe
newextensionofthetownbeyondthemosque
waslaidloutwithitspresentavenueandthe
bridgenearthechurchtoconnectitwithsta
tionroadwasalsoconstructed.Behindthe
Kammaquartersalsoanewextensionwas
opened.DuringthePlague186deathsoccur
redoutOf222attacks,includingamongstthe
victimsthePostMaster,theVillageMagis
trateofKammapalliwhohadworkedfearlessly
throughout,andlastofallMrs.Gnanamani,the
LadyApothecarywhoseservicesduringthe
outbreakwerebeyondpraise.Thatthetown
appreciatedthegoodworkshedidmaybeseen
fromthehandsomecrosserectedtoher
memoryinthegraveyardandfromthewindow
intheAmericanChurch.
SeriousaswerethefloodandthePlague
yetthetownbenefitedfor,fromthattime,it
tookinhandthesteadyimprovementofitself,
moreespeciallyinthequestionofdrainage.

therwasdonetill1903,whenthemainbazaar
wasundertakenandfromthenonwardsevery
yearhasseensteadyimprovement,sothatnow
itisprobablethatthetownwhichisonlya
Union,couldinthisrespectputtoshamemost
oftherichMunicipalitiesofthePresidency..
Attentionhasalsobeenpaidtoeverythingcon
nectedwithsanitationandhealth.Latrines
onthemostmodernSanitaryprincipleshave
beenerected,anexcellentsystemofprivate
scavengingintroduced,excellentmarketsfor
meatandvegetableshavebeenconstructedand
manywellsdugorimproved.Theresulthas
beenthatthetownhasbeenentirelyfree
fromepidemicsandfrombeingoneofthemost
squalidtownsoftheCededDistrictshasbe
comealmostamodelUnionandanexceedingly
pleasantplacetolivein.Awatersupplyhas
nexttobeprovidedandthereareproposalsfor
utilisingthespringsundertheLacchireddi
Tank,whichwasrestoredin1905-7mainly
toconservethewatersupplyOfthetown.It
isalsoproposedtoerectanoilengineatoneof

dailyflushthedrains.Alltheimprovements
weredesignedandcarriedoutbyP.V.Raghava
chariartheAssistantEngineeroftheLocal
Fund.
MadanapalliwhenMajorMunroenteredit
in1801,wasconfinedwithinitswallsanditis
interestingtotracehowitgraduallyoutgrew
them.
TheEuropeanpartofthetowngrewup
byslowdegrees.Thefirsthousewasthatof
MajorMunro,athatchedbuildingstanding
wherenowthesittingroomoftheSub
Collector’shouseis.Itwasgenerallybelieved
thatthediningroomwasMunro’shousebut,
DoctorChamberlainassuredmethatthiswas
notsoandthatwhenhefirstcametoMadana
pallithatthatchedhousewasonlyjustbeing
removedandthatthediningroomwasbuiltby
Mr.LaconwhowasCollectorin1832,theyear
thatMacDonald,theSub-Collector,waskilled
inthereligiousriotatCuddapah.
In1846Mr.Cochrane,aCollector,built
theoctagonalroomanditwasinthisyearand
whilesoengagedthathereceivedwordofthe

LaterMr.Molony,in1861,builtthe

occupiedbytheclubbungalowandtheD.P.W.

intendeditforahotweatherresort,butMrs.
Porternotbeingabletostandtheclimate,
heeffectedanexchangefortwobungalowsin
CuddapahCantonmentwithApparao,thethen
TahsildarofMadanapalli,whohad,itissaid,
informationthattheCantonmentwascoming
toacloseandthatbungalowstherewouldbe
worthverylittle,whereasMadanapallihad
attractionsasasummerresidence.
Thisbungalowwaslateroccupiedby
MajorPalmerfromabout1885.Hewas
ExecutiveEngineerengagedfor10yearsin
buildingthePunganur-Gurramkondaroadand
otherroadsintheDistrict.Afterhimthe

quartersOftheSub-Collector.Mr.Molony
wasthefirstSub-CollectortobestatiOnedthere.
ForthefirsthalfofthecenturyMadana
palliwasmerelyasummerrefugefromthe
heatsofCuddapah,andthefirstofficertobe
permanentlystationedtherewasMajorPalmer
in1855.Hewasengagedinconstructing
thefirstroadfromPalmanertoGurramkonda
whichwastoeventuallyreachCuddapahand
fornearly10yearshewassoemployed.

whentheArbuthnotcrashcameandcarried

havenotbeenaswellrewardedastheyshould
havebeenbuthehasthesatisfactiOnofhaving
addedtwolargeextrabuildingstotheschool,
onefortheLowerStandardsandOneforthe
Upperforms.Thelatterhasbeenpresented
byK.RamachendraReddiofJammulamadugu
andwasopenedin1910.Ifthepeopleofthe
districtwantaHighSchool,andtheymake
freeuseofit,theymustpayforitssupport
butthisiswhattheyareveryunwillingtodo.

Madanapalli‘townof1840wasenclosed
withinitswallswithoutasingletiledorterrac
edbuilding,forthenasnownoPoligarwould
sleepbene:'hanythingbutthatchandifthe
Poligarhadonlyathatchedhouseitwould
havebeenpresumptionforanyoneelsetohave
anythingelse.Further-moreterracedbuild
ingswereonlyfortemples. ,
Theoldestterracedbuildingwasprobably
thatbuiltbyBacchiRaoPantulu,theformer
HuzurSherishtadarorDiwanashewasthen
called,ofCuddapah.Thepaybeingthen

HeadManager,thefirstbeingGopalIyerwho
was,inMr.Wedderburn’stime,followedby
SudarsanaRao.AfterthisthetitleofHead
Sherishtadarwasadopted,SimhardriPantulu
beingthefirst.sostyled.
TheriseofNemaliAppaRaoissaidtobe
connectedwiththegreatBacchiraowhohad
twosonsoneofwhomwasintheTreasuryand

rupeesvanished.TheCollectorwashasten
ingwithallspeedtothespotonhearingthis
rumourbutwasoutdistancedbyBacchirao’s
messengertoApparaoinCuddapahtocollect

sury.TheTahsildarwasthenapowerful
personandCuddapahtownpaidandthe
Treasurywasfoundcorrect.
GratitudemadetheDiwanthepartonof
AppaRaoandinduecourseheobtainedmost
ofhispatron’sproperty.Suchisthestory
thatnowcirculatesinthedistrict.Idonot
vouchforit.
Thetemplesofthetownwereinsignificant,
theoldestnearthetownprobablybeingthose
ofSivaandVenkataRamanaswamiattheend
ofCarstreet.Itwasonlyin1860thatthis
latterwasenlargedandmadeasitnow
appears.TheSivatemplewasformanyyears
merelytheplaceforkeepingthevaluablesof
theolderSivaTempleacrosstheriver.Only
recentlywasaGodinstalladintheshrine.

succeedingworshippers.Theirdeathsare
beyondthememoryofeventraditionsothatit
issafetoinferthattheoriginalshrineisof
greatage.
Adjoiningthetempleapialandhearth
arekeptsacredtothememoryofBawajiand
noonedarestousethem.
Thetempleissupportedbycontributions
andalsobytherentofthesmallshedunder
thebanyantreeadjoiningthetemplewhichis
letoutasashop.Behindthetempleisa
smallgardenalsothepropertyofthetemple.
Therewereoldmenalivein1910who
rememberedthefirstcartthatevercameto
Madanapalliin1862fromPalamanerside
andyettheylivedtoseeaMotorCarinthe
town.Itmaybementionedasafactlittle
knownthatthecountrycartistheinventionof
twoengineersubalternsinthePindariWar.

In1900therewereonlythreestreetsin
thetownwideenoughtodrivethrough,the
Kammaroad,BrahminstreetandDhakinipeta
Road.TheBazaarstreetwasencroachedhalf
acrossbyopendrainsandSlabcoverings.
Therewasnomeansofgettingfromoneside
oftheforttotheother.Nowthetownhas
beenopenedupineverydirectionandthe
majorityoftheroadsarefairlywide.The
townbegantooutgrowitslimitsabout20years
agoandKottapetawaslaidoutin1899inthe
timeofMr.FrancisbyChinnappaReddi.To
thispartofthetownmanywell-to-dopeople
havemoved.Thetownextensionfromthe
newChurchtotheMasjidwasopenedoutin
1905andagainin1909theroadfromthe
HospitaltotheChinnaTippaSamudramroadhas
beenformedtoallowofextensionofbuildings_

townhavesprungupwithinthelast50years
andmostofthemwithinthelast20.The

whereformanyyearstheMissionarygavea
specialeveningserviceforEnglishresidents
wheneverenoughwereinthestation.
Graduallyadesireforalargerandmore
convenientbuildinggrewupandthefirst
actualdonationwasmadein1888byMr.Welsh,
theSubCollector,whoonleavingthestation
gavehalftheproceedsofthesaleofahorse,

nativeChristiansofthetowncollectedamong
stthemselvesoverRs.3000andAmerican
