“Respect your father
and your mother, so that
you may live a long time
in the land that I am
giving you. - Exodus 20:12
Role of the Father
Head of the Household: The father is the
head of the family, responsible for leading
and providing for the household. In Ephesians
5:23, the husband is described as the head of
the wife, just as Christ is the head of the
church.
Provider: Fathers are called to
provide for the physical and spiritual
needs of their families. 1 Timothy 5:8
emphasizes the importance of
providing for one's household, stating
that anyone who does not provide for
their family has denied the faith.
Spiritual Leader: Fathers are responsible for
teaching and guiding their children in the ways of
the Lord. Proverbs 22:6 encourages fathers to
"train up a child in the way he should go," and
Ephesians 6:4 instructs fathers to bring up their
children in the discipline and instruction of the
Lord.
Disciplinarian: Fathers are also tasked with
disciplining their children, but they are
warned not to provoke their children to
anger, as seen in Ephesians 6:4 and
Colossians 3:21. Discipline is meant to be
done in love and for the child’s growth.
Role of the Mother:
Supporter of the Husband: In the context of
marriage, wives (and mothers) are called to
respect and support their husbands.
Ephesians 5:22-24 speaks of wives
submitting to their husbands as to the Lord,
emphasizing a partnership rooted in love
and mutual respect.
1.
Nurturer and Caregiver: Mothers are
often depicted as the primary
nurturers in the family. Proverbs 31:27
describes a mother who looks well to
the ways of her household and does not
eat the bread of idleness.
Model of Virtue: The Bible often highlights the
virtuous qualities of a godly woman. Proverbs
31:10-31 paints a picture of a woman who is
industrious, wise, strong, and compassionate,
serving as a role model for her family.
Teacher: Mothers play a vital role in teaching and
imparting wisdom to their children. Proverbs 1:8
advises children not to forsake their mother's
teaching. The influence of a godly mother is seen in
the example of Timothy's mother and
grandmother, who passed on their faith to him (2
Timothy 1:5).
To create a happy family :
Love and respect : Spouses should love
and respect each other (Ephesians
5:33).
Obedience : children should Obey their
parents. (Ephesians6:1)
