A PATTERN FOR CHRISTIAN SERVICE
2 Kings 6:1-7
This story of raising the lost axe head is a story of a miracle
of recovery and restoration. Elisha is a type Jesus, the
company of prophets are the Christian workers and the
axe-head is the anointing of the Holy Spirit without which
we can never render effectiveness in our Christian service.
But this story also gives us a pattern of how we must serve
God.
1. RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MASTER (verse 1)..”sons
of the Prophets” and these sons of the Prophets were also
the disciples of Elijah.
We cannot serve Jesus if we are not rightly related to Him.
(Jn 1:12)
2. FELLOWSHIP AND COMMUNION WITH GOD AND WITH
FELLOW BELIEVERS (verse1)“….Behold now, the place
where we dwell with thee is too strait for us”
Elisha and the Prophets are in constant fellowship and
communion with each other and with God. They always
met. (Jn 15:4)
3. RECOGNIZING THE NEED AND ARE APT FOR SERVICE
(verse 2) “…Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take
thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place
there, where we may dwell…” They were burdened with
the need for service.
4. OBEYING AND FOLLOWING THE COMMAND (verse 2) “…
GO…” (Matt.28:19) When the Elisha bid them Go, the
prophets obeyed and followed Elisha’s commissioned.
5. DEPENDENCE TO THE MASTER AND TO HIS WORD. (verse
3) “And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy
servants. And he answered, I will go”. They realized that
attempting to do the work of God without God, the Word of
God and the power of God is futile. (Jn. 15:5)
6. WORKING TOGETHER WITH THE TEAM (verse 2) “Let us
go, we pray thee…and take thence every man a beam,…let
us make us a place there, where we may dwell…” Each
man takes his own share of the work. Each man joined in
the task. Each man mind the group’s work.
7. WORKING ENTHUSIASTICALLY (KEEN) AND
ENERGITICALLY. (verse 4) “…And when they came to
Jordan, they cut down wood.” With the right tools , each
individual prophet was so keen and full of energy doing
each assigned work or tree to cut down bearing in mind
that it is for the Lord and Lord’s work.
