The Impact of Sleep Deprivation on the Physical Performance of Senior High School Students   PREPARED BY : MARY ANN EDAÑO JOHN BENEDICT DUPA MARSHA GODARIDO JAYNO TELERON JESSA SANTILLA N

Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose. -Zara Hurston

INTRODUCTION Sleeping is a multifaceted process that goes beyond closing your eyes and counting sheep. It is an active state of unconsciousness produced by the body, where the brain is virtually at rest and reacts mostly to internal stimuli, according to Brinkman et al. (2023). I nadequate or erratic sleep might worsen general physical health and perhaps affect mental and emotional functioning (Crivello et al., 2019).

Lim et al. (2008) found that sleep deprivation significantly reduces people's ability to respond quickly to stimuli. These problems have primarily been attributed to deficiencies in vigilant attention, which many theorists believe constitute the basis of the other more sophisticated components of cognition . High school kids frequently have to forgo sleep since, regrettably, society does not respect it. Studies after studies have shown that today's high school students do not get adequate sleep

Sleep deprivation is most common among Asians, especially Filipinos, according to the 2016 Healthy Living Index Survey (quoted by Philips, 2017). According to the poll, 32% of respondents nationwide claimed to have slept for fewer than six hours, while 46% claimed to have not gotten enough sleep. The problem persists in society because of the ongoing suffering that it inflicts on students.

There are several reasons why a high school student might not be able to get enough sleep. Many high school students prioritize extracurricular activities and involvement over their emotional well-being. To make sure they haven't forgotten anything, they could choose to stay up until the wee hours of the morning rather than going to bed at nine o'clock (Bajaj, 2020).

The researchers believe that Tubigon West National High School is the best place for the study because a lot of pupils arrive late to class this year. They knew that sleep deprivation affects teenagers differently, therefore they were curious to find out how it affected students under the HUMMS strand

RELATED LITERATURE Most of us will spend approximately one-third of our lives asleep. Despite the large proportion of our existence that it consumes, there remains little scientific consensus regarding the actual function that sleep provides. Even to the non-expert, sleep has obvious importance for sustaining normal functioning at several levels, including basic alertness, emotional experience and a host of complex cognitive processes ( Killgore , 2010).

Sleeping is really important to the human body just like humans need food and water to survive every day because inadequate quality of this may lead to grave danger (Better Health Channel, 2014). Cherney & Watson (2020) stated that sleep recovers the chemical balance of the body thus, makes the brain sharper in memory retention. Sleeps Core labs (2020) says that a quality sleep is the foundation for good health which is vital to rebuild bodily tissues, rejuvenate cells and of course, refresh the body energy

According to the National Heart, Lungs and Blood Institute (2020), sleep deprivation is a condition that happens when a person does not get sufficient sleep. Costandi (2018) said that the lack of sleep dramatically affects a person’s mental abilities because it makes a person irritable and moody and impairs brain functions that are needed to accomplish everyday tasks.

T he Filipino Times (2019) wrote on their news articles section that the Philippines ranks 4 th in sleep deprivation in the world according to sleep cycle. It has been said on the report that Filipinos were spending 6 hours and 30 minutes to 5 hours and 45 minutes of sleep per day

recent study of the prevalence of sleep disorders investigated over 20,000 patients in the Netherlands who were aged 12 years old or older. The study found an alarming prevalence rate of 27.3%, with 21.2% of the males and 33.2% of the females reporting that they had some type of sleep disorder (National Library of Medicine, 2018).

Previous studies have revealed that sleep deprivation can cause a series of changes in an individual’s mood, cognitive ability, work performance, and immune function ( Choo et al., 2005 ). S ome studies have revealed that the cumulative effects of partial sleep deprivation could severely impair cognitive function and behavior ( Van Dongen , 2004 ;  Scott et al., 2006 ;  Jarraya et al., 2013 ).

In a study conducted by Stanford Medicine (2015) ascertain that sleep deprivation increases the likelihood teens will suffer myriad negative consequences, including an inability to concentrate, poor grades, drowsy-driving incidents, anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide and even suicide attempts .

In a study by Chattu , Manzar and Pandi -Perumal (2019) entitled “The Global Problem of Insufficient Sleep and its Serious Public Health Implications”, they have found out that insufficient sleep is prevalent across different age groups that is why it is considered as a public health epidemic that is often unrecognized, under reported, and that high economic costs.

According to Bill Velasco from the Philippine Star (2015) that one major phenomenon that has been gradually eroding the health of the Philippines is lack of sleep. Proper sleep has been proven to help students perform better in school the following day, particularly in complicated tasks like mathematics.

In “Sleep Deprivation and Psychomotor Performance Among Night-Shift Nurses,” Johnson et al. (2010) studied night-shift nurses and their sleeping habits. In order to better understand how sleep impacts psychomotor performance, the nurses were examined under normal work conditions. It is hypothesized that sleep deprived health care providers are at higher risk for making errors while at work.

The study is anchored on Restoration Theory by Oswald (1966) a ccording to Oswald (1966), the function of sleep is to restore the body during periods of inactivity so that adequate biological functioning is ensured. The tissues of the brain and body are repaired and the chemicals needed for proper functioning are replenished .

Conceptual Framework The study used the input-process-output (IPO) approach as its conceptual paradigm. With the use of this paradigm, it showed how the research will be analyzed in order to assess the effects of sleep deprivation to the Senior High School students of St. Pedro Calungsod , College, Inc.

The IPO model is the most commonly used research paradigm that is used around the world wherein the model shows the overall progression of the study, Psychology Research and References (2020) says. According to Sarmiento (2012), the input is soothing that is being given to the study by the researchers. They may be raw data or pre-existing data which has been provided by the researchers

T he process is the transformation of the inputs and its analyzation. In fact, it is the most important element of the framework because it accepts the inputs and analyze it in order to give results on it. And lastly, the output; it is the result of the study.

Statement of the Problem This study aims to determine the relationship between the students’ profile in impact of sleep deprivation on the physical performance of senior students of St. Pedro Calungsod College during the academic year 2023-2024

What is the demographic profile of the students in terms of: . Sex . Age . Strand, and Time, they sleep Ascertain the effects of sleep deprivation on their physical performance Ascertain the significant difference between the effects of sleep deprivation of the participants to their demographic profile .

Statement of the Null Hypotheses There is no significant difference between the effects of sleep deprivation to the demographic profile of the participants of the study.

Significance of the Study To the Students . With this research, they will realize how sleep deprivation affects their physical performance and overall behavior during class. The information gathered in this study will increase their awareness about sleep deprivation and they will earn new knowledge from the topic studied by the researchers.

To the Parents . They will be able to recognize the motives behind their child’s behavior and performance due to lack of sleep and gain knowledge on how to handle them. Through this study, they will be able to help their child who get insufficient sleep to cope up in school and other activities. To the Teachers . They will understand the effects of sleep deprivation upon the performance of their students. Further they will know why some of their students are late in class online and physical so that they can fully understand why they are behaving like that.

To the Future Researchers . The findings of this research will give them further knowledge on their study that tackles the effects of sleep deprivation to students. They will be able to test the validity of their research with the help of this study making their research much more accurate

The study, “ The Impact of Sleep Deprivation on the Physical Performance of Senior High School Students” focuses on the assessment of the effects of sleep deprivation on the physical performance of students in the school. Scope and Delimitation of the Study

St. Pedro Calungsod College, Inc. is located in Panadtaran , Tubigon , Bohol is the location that the researchers decided to conduct their study. They have chosen the institution because the researchers observed that most of the time, there were students late at their class because of lack of sleep due to heavy workloads to be passed on a certain day of due date.

Definition of Terms Behavior. This is the psychological response of the Senior High School students of St. Pedro Calungsod College, Inc. under the effects of sleep deprivation. This is the variable of the researchers wherein they wanted to assess how these respondents react to their environment and bodily functions when they get insufficient sleep on that day. Physical Performance. This is the ability of the Senior High School students to endure bodily pain due to sleep deprivation. This is the variable of the researchers wherein they wanted to assess what are the effects of sleep deprivation as they perform on their group works and other related school activities. Sleep Deprivation. This is the inability of the Senior High School students of to have sufficient sleep for at least 7 hours or more every day.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Research Design The study will use a quantitative research design. Saunders et al (2014) defines the descriptive research as one which looks with intense accuracy at the phenomenon and then describe precisely what the researchers see. Correlation technique determine the relation between the number of hours students sleep. Descriptive design describes students’ flexibility towards sleep deprivation. Moreover, a descriptive survey research uses surveys to gather data about varying subjects. Hence, these data aim to know the extent to which different conditions can be obtained among these subjects ( Formplus , 2020).

Research Locale The research study is located at Specifically, it is located in Panadtaran , Tubigon , Bohol is the preferred place for researchers to conduct the study because they have observed form this school year that there are a lot of late comers in school. Thus, they know that sleep deprivation has different approach on students therefore they wanted to know its effect on students under HUMMS strand.   Research Population The selected respondents are from Senior High School students of HUMMS strand composes of randomly selected 45 respondents of mixed sexes.

Research Instrument In order to gather data needed for the study, the researchers used survey research questionnaires as their instrument. According to McLeod (2018), a questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions for the purpose of gathering information from the respondents. Thus, it is relatively quick and efficient way acquiring quantities of information from a large sample space. Moreover, a survey is a method of gathering information from a sample of people. Surveys provide a critical source of data and insights for the people being given the survey that will be answered by them.

Data Gathering Procedure This part of the chapter shows the step-by-step procedure in gathering the data from the respondents. In order to acquire the needed information from the respondents, the researchers used survey research questionnaire wherein its content is about the impact of sleep deprivation on senior students’ physical performance. Before, distributing the questionnaires to the selected respondents, these questionnaires will be given to the experts first for approval. After approval, the researchers will seek for the approval of the principal to the conduct of the study. Then they will commence on gathering information from the respondents.

Statistical Treatment of Data After the questionnaires will be answered and retrieved, the data will be compiled, tabulated, and interpreted. It will employ the following quantitative statistical treatment: Percentage . It is used to specify respondents' profile and the amplitude of their replies to the survey questions items listed. Weighted mean and Composite Mean . It is used to gauge the average value of responses to the different items in the questionnaire
