TONE OF THE POEM STYLE: The poem consists of 5 stanzas each is made up of 4 lines. The rhyme scheme is: abcb : abcb The poem has two distinct settings The first setting is of the zoo where the tiger is put in a cage. The second setting is that of the natural wild habitat of the tiger. The tone of the poet is full of regret because he believes that this is not the kind of life a tiger should be living. There is also a tone of anger that the tiger feels at being caged.
Zoo enclosure THEME OF THE POEM The poet Leslie Norris wants to convey that it is cruel to keep wild animals in small enclosures like zoo, away from their natural habitat. The tigers feel angry, helpless unhappy and longs to go back to their own surroundings in the forest.
1 ST STANZA The poet says that the tiger that is confined in the zoo, moves around in the cage under his bright coloured skin. His feet are soft like velvet. The tiger is angry as he is away from leaps and bounds in the jungle. the tiger is personified because the poet refers him as ‘he’. He stalks in his vivid stripes The few steps of his cage On pads of velvet quiet, In his quiet rage. Meaning: Stalks: walks/follows Vivid: bright coloured Pads: soft paws of tiger Rage: anger

2 ND STANZA RHYME SCHEME: abcb (grass-pass) Enjambment: line continues to next line without punctuation marks.(sliding through… deer pass) Alliteration: plump pass Imagery: lurking in shadow He should be lurking in shadow, Sliding through long grass Near the water hole Where plump deer pass Explanation: the poet says that if the tiger would have been free he would have hid himself behind the long grass ,near water bodies so that he is able to catch his fat prey deer which is his actual life and not to be in the cage lifetime.
3RD STANZA EXPLANATION: According to the poet if the tiger would have been free and roaming in the jungle , he would have snarled around the houses located on the outskirts of forest. He would have terrorised people with his sharp tooth and claws creating fear among the villagers. He should be Snarling around Houses At the jungle’s edge, Baring his white fangs, his claws, Terrorising the village! MEANINGS: SNARLING: warning sounds made by animals. 4 TH STANZA EXPLANATION : the poet feels sorry for the animal locked in a cage. His strength is also locked behind the bars as he is not able to expose his true instincts of ferociousness. He never tries to terrorize the visitors in the zoo as he is locked and cannot attack them. But he’s locked in a concrete cell, His strength behind bars, Stalking the length of his cage, Ignoring visitors. Meaning: Locked: caged Concrete: building made of bricks and cement
