5 MULTI- TESTER RESISTANCE VOLTAGE INSTRUMENT CURRENT ANALOG DIGITAL MULTIMETER VOM

What is a multi- tester? A multimeter or a multi- tester, also known as a VOM (volt-ohm- milliameter ), is an electronic measuring instrument that combines several measurement functions in one unit. A typical multimeter can measure voltage , current , and resistance .

7 OBJECT- ively speaking

8 Parts of Multitester I look like a needle that moves across a scale to indicate measurement readings.

9 Parts of Multitester I am a printed measurement guide on the meter’s display that corresponds to the movement of the pointer.

10 Parts of Multitester We are insulated wires with metal tips used to connect the device to the circuit/ component being tested.

11 Parts of Multitester I am a small dial or screw, used to calibrate the pointer to zero before taking measurements.

12 Parts of Multitester I am a part of a multi- tester, used to calibrate the meter for accurate resistance (ohm) measurements.

13 Parts of Multitester I am a rotary switch or dial that allows users to choose the appropriate measurement type and range.

14 Parts of Multitester We are the metal tips of the test probes.

16 Direct current (DC) is the flow of electric charge in only one direction. Alternating current (AC) is the flow of electric charge that periodically reverses direction.

Examples of Direct Current (DC): Batteries – Used in flashlights, remote controls, and mobile phones. Solar Panels – Generate DC electricity to power devices or charge batteries. Laptops & Mobile Chargers – Although plugged into AC, they use DC power internally. Electric Vehicles (EVs) – Their motors and batteries operate on DC power. Electronic Circuits – Computers, radios, and televisions rely on DC for internal operation.

Examples of Alternating Current (AC): Household Electrical Outlets – Powering appliances like refrigerators, TVs, and microwaves. Power Grids – AC is used for long-distance electricity transmission. Electric Generators – AC generators in power plants produce electricity. Induction Motors – Used in washing machines, fans, and industrial machinery. Transformers – Used to step up or step down voltage in power lines.

19 How to read the Voltage in an Analog Multi- tester?

20 Steps to Read DC/ AC Voltage (Step-by-step guide) 1. Turn the Selector Knob 2. Insert the Probes 3. Touch the Probes 4. Read the Value 5. Interpret the Measurement

Demonstration – Live Reading of Voltage Demonstration: Measure DC voltage from a battery and AC voltage from an outlet. Interactive Activity: Participants take turns measuring voltage with guidance. Group Discussion: Compare readings and discuss challenges.

Selecting the wrong voltage range. Misinterpreting the scale. Holding probes incorrectly. Forgetting to reset to zero. Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting

Always start with the highest range. Never measure resistance or continuity with power ON. Hold probes by insulated parts. Avoid touching metal parts when measuring high voltage. Safety Precautions Check the multimeter’s battery and calibration regularly.

Summary of steps for DC and AC voltage reading. Importance of correct range selection. Reinforce safety measures. Recap and Key Takeaways
