ourpoliticalstrugglehadtakenadefinite
turn.Dr.AnnieBesantandLokmanya
TilakhoisteditduringtheHomerule
movement.Thisflaghadfiveredandfour
greenhorizontalstripsarranged
alternately,withsevenstarsinthe
saptarishiconfigurationsuper-imposedon
them.Intheleft-handtopcorner(thepole
end)wastheUnionJack.Therewasalsoa
whitecrescentandstarinonecorner.

•Theyear1931wasalandmarkin
thehistoryoftheflag.Aresolutionwas
passedadoptingatricolorflagasour
nationalflag.Thisflag,theforbearof
thepresentone,wassaffron,whiteand
greenwithMahatmaGandhi'sspinning
wheelatthecenter.Itwas,however,
clearlystatedthatitborenocommunal
significanceandwastobeinterpreted
thus.
The flag adopted in 1931. This flag was also
the battle ensign of the Indian National
Army.

The Tiranga
•OnJuly22,1947,theConstituent
AssemblyadopteditasFreeIndia
NationalFlag.Aftertheadventof
Independence,thecolorsandtheir
significanceremainedthesame.Only
theDharmaCharkhaofEmperor
Asokawasadoptedinplaceofthe
spinningwheelastheemblemonthe
flag.Thus,thetricolorflagofthe
CongressPartyeventuallybecamethe
tricolorflagofIndependentIndia.

of Saffron color, indicating the strength and
courage of the country.
