Definitional Aspects 01

What is a Profession?? A job at which someone works for money/ living… and is trained/skilled in it. It has meaningful participation in larger order of society

What is Your Profession?

Technical Bindings Social Bindings Individual Belief Standards for what is considered acceptable or unacceptable behavior in both personal and professional contexts. Making of a Professional

Bindings by the Society/ Religion Rules & Regulations : S pecific guidelines or instructions that prescribe or prohibit certain actions or behaviors. Established by authorities, institutions, or governing bodies to maintain order, enforce norms, or achieve specific objectives. Rules can be formal, or informal.

Bindings by the Society/ Religion Ethic : Ethics is a branch of philosophy that aims to determine the correct application of moral concepts such as good and bad, right and wrong. Ethics is divided into three branches or types: Normative-ethics (actions be judged for consequences or their adherence to a moral rule) Meta-ethics ( naturalism, intuitionism, emotivism, and prescriptivism ) Applied-ethics (Professional ethics falls in applied category)

Bindings by the Society/ Religion Ethic : Ethics refer to principles or standards of conduct that govern an individual or group's behavior. They guide decisions about what is right or wrong, fair or unfair, and good or bad. Ethics can vary depending on cultural, religious, philosophical, or professional perspectives. For example, medical ethics include principles like beneficence, autonomy, and justice.

Individual Conceptual Bindings Moral Values : Moral values are beliefs or principles that individuals or societies hold about what is right or wrong. Provide a framework for evaluating actions and their consequences. Honesty , integrity, compassion, empathy, and respect for others .

How Different?? While they are sometimes used interchangeably, they are different:  Ethics  refer to rules provided by an external source , e.g., codes of conduct in workplaces or principles in religions.  Morals  refer to an individual’s own principles regarding right and wrong.

…Hand in Glove…. Ethics : Because society says it is the right thing to do. They tend to be consistent within a certain context, but can vary between contexts. A follower of Ethical Principles may not have any Morals at all and vice versa. Ethics are governed by professional and legal guidelines within a particular time and place Morals : Because we believe in something being right or wrong. Usually consistent, although can change if an individual’s beliefs change. A Moral Person, may choose to follow a code of ethics as it would apply to a system. "Make it fit“ Morality transcends cultural/ religious norms

Moral/ Ethical Dilemma A situation in which a person is faced with a difficult choice between two or more conflicting moral principles, values, or courses of action. No clear/ easy solution that fully satisfies all relevant ethical considerations, and any decision made may result in undesirable consequences or moral harm. https://helpfulprofessor.com/ethical-dilemma-examples /

Extremely complicated challenges that cannot be easily solved. Therefore, the ability to find the optimal solution in such situations is critical to every decision maker .

Ethical Dilemmas A man has been sentenced to prison for armed robbery, and admits guilt for the deed. "But", he argues,"I'll never do anything of the kind again. I'm not insane or a danger to society. I would be happier out of jail than in. My wife depends on me for support and she and the children would be far happier if I were able to be the family breadwinner again. As to the influence on others, almost no one would ever know about it; you can keep the matter out of the newspapers and no one except you will ever know that the crime was committed. Therefore, you should release me" Assuming he is correct, what would you do?

Ethical Dilemmas You are offered 20 million PKR for providing assistance in facilitating a multinational company to set up a power project in Pakistan. Project will be of good quality It will be beneficial to people of Pakistan It will help overcome energy crises in Pakistan Company will still set it up, even if you don’t accept the bribe . Someone else will do it. The are offering this money only for you to facilitate them. No one will find out about the money.

Ethical Dilemmas Its your first day at work after promotion to 20 th grade. You as a boss call a young Xen in your office give him money and ask him to buy for you, some fruits and milk and drop the same at your home. He responds, “ Sir, I am not your private servent ”, ………How do u like it?. Will this result in a rift between you and your new Xen? Will it hurt his integrity if you do so? Will it hurt your ego if he refuses? Is it ethical for you to ask him for this favor? When you were a junior , would you do it for your boss ?

Ethical Dilemmas You don’t take bribe and this is your 27th year of service. A case gets to you and you have been pressurized to sign it and you get life threats in case you don’t accept the demand. Now you have decided to sign the file out of fear. A friend walks in and you discuss the situation with him and he suggests that since you have decided to sign the file it is perfectly okay for you to demand money for it. You think about it and decide to demand money. You plan to donate it once you receive it from them. Is it ethically a correct decision?

These resources help individuals, organizations, and policymakers navigate ethical dilemmas and make morally informed choices.

DOES WAPDA/ NEPRA HAVE ANY SUCH GUIDELINES
