ANATOMICAL TERMS AND
RELATIONS

T.P. ORISAJO

DEFINING THE ANATOMICAL
POSSITION

•Body erect with arms at
the side

•Palm turned forward

ANATOMICAL TERMS
SUPERIOR(CRANIAL)

•Towards the Head
•E.g Heart is SUPERIOR to
the Liver

INFERIOR(CAUDAL)

•Towards the tail-end of the
body
•E.g Liver is INFERIOR to
the Heart

ANATOMICAL TERMS
ANTERIOR(VENTRAL)

•Towards the front of the body
•E.g Trachea is ANTERIOR to
Oesophagus

POSTERIOR(DORSAL )

•Towards the back of the body
•E.g Oesophagus is
POSTERIOR to the Trachea

ANATOMICAL TERMS
MEDIAL

•Near the mid-line of the body
•The Eye is MEDIAL to the Ear

LATERAL

•Away from the mid-line of the
body
•The Ear is LATERAL to the Eye

Quick Question!
How will you Describe the Nose in
relation to the Mouth

ANATOMICAL TERMS
PROXIMAL

•Nearer to the trunk
•Shoulder joint is PROXIMAL to
the Elbow joint

DISTAL

•Farther from the Trunk
•Elbow joint is DISTAL to the
Shoulder Joint

ANATOMICAL TERMS
SUPERFICIAL

•Towards the surface of the
body
•E.g The Skin is SUPERFICIAL
to the Bones

DEEP

•Deep within the body
•E.g The Bones are DEEP to
the skin

ANATOMICAL PLANES
• MEDIAN PLANE(MID-
SAGITTAL PLANE)

•SAGITTAL PLANE

•FRONTAL PLANE(CORONAL
PLANE)

•TRANSVERSE
PLANE(HORIZONTAL PLANE)

ANATOMICAL PLANES
•MEDIAN PLANE, also
called MID-SAGITTAL
PLANE divides the body
into “equal” right and left.

ANATOMICAL PLANES
•SAGITTAL PLANE
Divides the body into left
and right, but NOT EQUAL
left and right.

ANATOMICAL PLANES
FRONTAL PLANE, also
called CORONAL
PLANE divides the body
into front(anterior) and
back(posterior)

ANATOMICAL PLANES
TRANSVERSE PLANE,
also called
HORIZONTAL PLANE
divides the body into
superior(top) and
inferior(bottom)
