Active & Passive Voice
Generally a sentence
has 3 parts.
Subject + Verb + Object
Active Voice:
If the subject performs an action.
Example: I speak English.
Passive Voice:
If the subject receives the action.
Example: English is spoken by me.

I have broken the glass
(sounds intentionally)
Passive Voice
The glass has been broken by me
(Unintentionally)

Identification of Active & Passive Voice:
In a sentence if the subject performs the
action it is an active voice.
If the subject receives the action it’s a
passive voice.
Passive voice always has 3
rd
form of verb
in it.
Passive voice of a continuous tense
includes the word “Being” before the
verb.
How Active & Passive Voice
changes with tenses?
Present tense: Subject + (is, am, are) + Verb +
object
Past tense: Subject + (was, were) + verb + object
Future tense: Subject + (will, will be) + verb +
object.
Continuous tense: Subject + H.V + being + verb +
object.
Perfect tenses: Subject + have, has + been +
verb + object.
Imperative tenses: verb + object (active)
Let + obj + be + verb (passive)
Active & Passive Voice
The cat chases the mouse. (present active)
The mouse is chased by the cat. (present passive)
John fixed the car yesterday. (past active)
The car was fixed by John yesterday. (past passive)
She is going to complete her project by Friday. (future active)
Her project is going to be completed by Friday. (future passive)
She is singing a song loudly. (continuous active)
A song is being sung loudly by her. (continuous passive)
He has written three letters. (perfect active)
Three letters have been written by him. (perfect passive)
Close the door. (imperative active)
Let the door be closed. (imperative passive)
