Acute Toxicity
Acute toxicityrefers to those adverse effects occurring following oral or dermal
administration of a single dose of a substance, or multiple doses given within 24
hours, or an inhalation exposure .
Examplesinclude coal dust, asbestos fibresor finely divided silicon dioxide, all of
which can ultimately be fatal if inhaled. Corrosive chemicals possess
physicaltoxicitybecause they destroy tissues, but they're not
directlypoisonousunless they interfere directly with biological activity.of4 hours.
Symptoms includes : breathing difficulties, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps,
sweating, excessive secretions, blurred vision, and musclepainand weakness,
among others.
Examples of acute toxicity
Inhalation of high concentrations of acid vapoursmight cause serious
burns of the mouth and the airways leading to the lungs.
Skin contact with certain organic solvents that are absorbed through the
skin may cause dizziness and nausea.
