•Acutewaterydiarrhoea–lastsseveralhoursordays,
andincludescholera;Thepathogensthatusuallycause
acutediarrhoeaincludeV.choleraeorE.colibacteria,
aswellasrotavirus.
•Acutebloodydiarrhoea–alsocalleddysentery;
shigella,
•Persistentdiarrhoea–lasts14daysorlonger.AIDS

Kwashiorkor)

CAUSES
•Infection:RotavirusandEscherichiacoli,arethetwomostcommon
etiologicalagentsofmoderate-to-severediarrhoeainlow-income
countries.Otherpathogenssuchascryptosporidiumandshigella
speciesmayalsobeimportant.
•Malnutrition:Childrenwhodiefromdiarrhoeaoftensufferfrom
underlyingmalnutrition,whichmakesthemmorevulnerableto
diarrhoea.
•Source:Watercontaminatedwithhumanfaeces,animalfaeces
•Othercauses:Poorpersonalhygiene,unhygienicfood,unsafe
domesticwaterstorage,fishandseafoodfrompollutedwatermay
alsocontributetothedisease.
