ADDITION & SUBTRACTION

ADDITION - finding the total, or sum, by combining two or more numbers.

PROPERTIES OF ADDITION

1. Order/ Commutative Property - The order of the numbers does not affect the sum.   If A and B represent 2 whole numbers, then A + B = B + A. Example: 4 + 2 = 6, 2 + 4 = 6, 2 + 4 = 4 + 2.

2. Identity Property -the sum of any number and zero (0) is the number itself. Example: 56 + 0 = 56 19, 343 + 0 = 19 343

3. Grouping/ Associative Property - when we add two or more numbers, the sum is not affected by the way the addends are grouped. EXAMPLES: (5 + 2) + 3 5 + (2 + 3) Thus, (5 + 2) + 3 = 5 + (2 + 3) (5 + 2) + 3 = 10, 5 + (2 + 3) = 10

SUBTRACTION - is the process of finding the difference between two numbers or taking one number from another.

a. The difference between two same numbers is always equal to 0. Example: 15 – 15 = 0 b. When we subtract zero (0) from number, the number remains the same. Example: 23 – 0 = 23

c. Addition is the inverse of subtraction. Example: 67 – 53 = 14 53 + 14 = 67

ACTIVITY! Answer the activity on your book, “Let’s Work Together A, B, and C on page 22 and 23. A. Fill in each box with the correct symbol. B. State each number represented by a. C. Use the appliance showcase in the box to answer the questions that follow.

ASSIGNMENT! Answer “On Your Own A and B” on page 24 A. Find the correct digit for each box. B. Cross two numbers in the tail of the given arrow that give the sum at the arrowhead.
