ADDITION
OF FRACTIONS
ADDING FRACTIONS WITH THE
SAME DENOMINATORS
(SIMILAR FRACTIONS)
ADDING FRACTIONS WITH THE
SAME DENOMINATORS
(SIMILAR FRACTIONS)
Make sure the bottom numbers (the
denominators) are the same.
ADDING SIMILAR FRACTIONS
To add fractions,
there are three
simple steps:
Add the top numbers (the numerators),
put that answer over the denominator
Simplify the fraction (if possible)
1 + 1
EXAMPLE:
Step 1. The bottom numbers (the denominators) are already the same. Go
straight to step 2.
Step 2. Add the top numbers and put the answer over the same denominator.

Step 3. Simplify the fraction.

ADDING FRACTIONS WITH
DIFFERENT DENOMINATORS
(DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS)
ADDING FRACTIONS WITH
DIFFERENT DENOMINATORS
(DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS)
Rename the dissimilar fractions as similar fractions by getting the least common
multiple of the denominators (LCD).
ADDING DISSIMILAR
FRACTIONS
3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 ...
5: 5, 10, 15, 20 ... LCD OF 3 and 5 is 15
5
Next, find the equivalent fraction of both fractional numbers with
denominator 15.

Another method:

Since the denominators are already the same, the last step is to add the numerators
and just copy the denominator.

ADDING DISSIMILAR
FRACTIONS
Divide the LCD into
the denominators and
multiply the answer
into the numerators.

ADDING MIXED FRACTIONS
TO ADD MIXED FRACTIONS:
CONVERT THEM INTO IMPROPER FRACTIONS.
THEN ADD THEM (USING ADDITION OF FRACTIONS)
THEN CONVERT BACK TO MIXED FRACTIONS
