Addition with Regrouping Learning How to Add Numbers with Regrouping

What is Addition? Addition is the process of finding the total or sum by combining two or more numbers.

Understanding Place Value Place value tells us the value of a digit based on its position in a number. In a two-digit number, the first digit represents tens, and the second digit represents ones.

What is Regrouping? Regrouping is when the sum of the digits in one place value is more than 9, so you carry over to the next place value.

Adding Without Regrouping Example: 25 + 14 Step 1: Add the ones: 5 + 4 = 9 Step 2: Add the tens: 2 + 1 = 3 Answer: 39

Adding With Regrouping Example: 26 + 17 Step 1: Add the ones: 6 + 7 = 13 (Regroup 13 into 1 ten and 3 ones) Step 2: Add the tens: 2 + 1 (carried) + 1 = 4 Answer: 43

Let’s Practice! Solve these problems: 1. 48 + 36 2. 57 + 28 3. 69 + 24

Interactive Activity Work in pairs to solve the following problem on the board: 34 + 28

Tips for Success • Always add the ones place first. • Don’t forget to carry over the number. • Double-check your work!

Review Today, we learned about addition with regrouping. Remember to add the ones first, regroup if necessary, and then add the tens.
