Adjective Phrases

Defination First, a phrase is any multiword group without a conjugated verb. Second, an adjectival phrase is a phrase that modifies or describes a noun or pronoun. Usually, an adjectival phrase consists of an adjective and a prepositional phrase, such as free from bias or pertinent to our discussion . We prefer to limit the expression adjectival phrase to those multiword groupings that begin with true adjectives.

Adjectives phrase An adjective phrase is a constituent which has an adjective as its head. Adjective like new/large/ wooden are fact adjectives They give us objective information about something( age , size, color) Adjectives are word that describe Nouns and used in many ways You can use them before or often Nouns.

Example For example : the very tall girl is my sister Very tall is an adjective phrase with tall as its head Your brother was angry about the results Angry about the result is an adjective phrase with angry as its head.

Adjectives before nouns Are often used before Nouns Type Example The Physical aspect of noun Firm surface Hallow tube The color of noun Dull color Faint glow The type of noun ( what is it ) Weekly meeting National emblem The quality, condition or state of noun Anxious mother Awkward moment

Adjectives after nouns When adjectives follow nouns, they usually come after the helping verb or auxiliary verb ( to be ) : am, is, are, was and were Auxiliary verb + adjective Sentence Am + earnest I am earnest Is + convenient The location is convenient

Comparing adjectives Most adjectives have three forms, a base form, a comparative form and a superlative form. Base form Comparative form Superlative form Thick thicker Thickest brave braver Bravest angry angrier angriest anxious More anxious Most anxious Difficult Less difficult Least difficult Good Better Best Bad Worse Worst

Example The textbook is thick The manual is thicker than the textbook The dictionary is the thickest of all

Adding prefixes to make antonyms There is another way you can make antonyms from given adjectives. You add a prefix to a given adjective to give it an opposite meaning.
