Administrative
Applications of
Information Technology
for Nursing Manager

OBJECTIVES:
After 5 minutes of discussion the BSN 2
students will Enhance Communication and
Collaboration, Strengthen Decision-Making
and Clinical Governance, Improve Patient
Engagement and Care Coordination,
Enhance Nursing Staff Productivity and
Satisfaction, Improve Workflow Efficiency.

Nursing Management Today:
Challenges, Chances, Choices
Ironically, the constituencies shaping healthcare-
global leaders, healthcare Chief Information Officers
(ClOs) and Chief Executive Officers (CEO), vendors
and patients- are accidentally jurist in the court of
healthcare IT future. They do not care about shaping
tomorrow's future; they just want their problems
solve. But because they are such key players, their
problems shape healthcare
information technology solutions.

Three major issues have an
administrative impact of on the
workplace, the profession, and the
future of nursing managers and
administrators. This issues are:
The nursing shortage
01
Increased demand for patient safety
02
The need for visibility
03

Interprofessional Collaboration
Clinical informatics enables seamless communication
and information sharing among healthcare
professionals, including nurses, physicians,
pharmacists, and other allied health providers.
Integrated electronic health records (EHRs) and
clinical decision support systems facilitate real-time
access to patient data, allowing nurses to collaborate
effectively with the interprofessional team.

Nurses can leverage clinical informatics tools
to coordinate care, share patient updates, and
participate in interdisciplinary decision-
making processes.
Telehealth and remote monitoring
technologies enable nurses to collaborate
with patients and other healthcare providers
across geographical boundaries, enhancing
the reach and quality of care.

2. Practice Workflow Optimization:
Clinical informatics can streamline nursing workflows by
automating routine tasks, reducing manual data entry, and
improving the efficiency of clinical documentation.
Nursing informatics tools, such as electronic medication
administration records (eMAR) and barcode medication
administration (BCMA), can help nurses minimize
medication errors and improve patient safety.

Clinical decision support systems can provide nurses
with real-time alerts, reminders, and evidence-based
recommendations, supporting their clinical decision-
making and enhancing the quality of care.
Nurse-led implementation and optimization of
clinical informatics systems can lead to improved
data capture, data analysis, and data-driven decision-
making, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and
organizational performance.

3. Nursing Leadership in Information Technology:
Nurses with expertise in clinical informatics can
assume leadership roles in the design,
implementation, and evaluation of healthcare
information technology (IT) systems.
Nurse informaticists can advocate for the
integration of nursing-specific requirements and
workflows into the development of EHRs and other
clinical information systems.

Nurse leaders in information technology can
provide training and support to their nursing
colleagues, empowering them to effectively
utilize clinical informatics tools and leverage
data to improve patient care.

Nursing Information System - A software
system that automates the nursing process
from assessment to evaluation, including
patient care documentation. It also includes a
means to manage the data necessary for the
delivery of patient care
Application and Implication of Information Technology for
Nursing Management

The Need for Nursing Data
Standards
Several years after developing practice
standards, American Nurses
Association (ANA) establish the Nursing
Information and Data Set Evaluation
Center to create and disseminate
standards for information system.

Evidence-Based Nursing
• Is the process by which nurses make clinical decisions
using the best available research evidence, their clinical
expertise and their patient preferences. Three areas of
research competence are: interpreting and using
research, evaluating practice and conducting
research

Nursing Administration's role
in IT implementation
- Nursing responsibility is to make sure that
organizations understand the value of these
system and despite what organizations may say
about nursing systems, they can and do
have value in the new healthcare equation

Summary
The administrative applications of information technology
for nursing managers encompass a wide range of tasks
aimed at improving efficiency, communication, and patient
care within healthcare settings. These applications include
Electronic Health Records (EHR), scheduling software,
telemedicine platforms, data analytics tools, and
communication systems. By leveraging these technologies,
nursing managers can streamline operations, enhance
decision-making processes, and ultimately improve the
quality of patient care.
