Architecture Thesis Project – Introduction
● A slum is predominantly an over crowded area which is in
advanced state of decay where dwellings are unfit for human
habitation .
● It is an area which lacks the basic amenities like water supply
and drainage for standard living and where an unsanitary
condition prevails and disease flourishes
● Slum is a poverty-striken area where there is high birth rate,
infant mortality, illegitmacy, crime and death, thus represents
the state of hell on the surface of earth.
●Unhealthy conditions are created due to absence of public
facilities like water supply, drainage, sanitation and light.
●The sub human conditions of the slums considerably affect the
health and life of people, there is complete absence of social
and cultural life due to slum formation in the city, the
overcrowding area is full of noise, smoke and congestion, this
affects considerably on the working conditions of the people in
offices, schools, hospitals etc.

●Slums have always been a solution to the housing problems of
low - income groups of society.
●They are affordable and manage to provide a basic level of
shelter to the dwellers.
●However, the dwellers do not lead to a good quality of life.
●They do not access to the basic facilities and the spaces are not
designed according to the human needs.
●During the pandemic , it was extremely hard for the dwellers to
practice social distancing

●Case study : Centre village in canada
●The project was done by two architecture firms in winnipeg,
canada.
●The project revolved around creating a residential village of 25
town houses . The aim was to provide affordable and flexibles
homes for low-income groups.
●The town houses were divided into three blocks and the village
had two main public spaces
●The spaces in each townhouses were divided into two modules
based on the function . 8 inch*12 inch for compact spaces and
14 inch* 12 inch for large spaces like living room.
●One of the main feature of the village is the number of
adequate public and community spaces.
●The outdoor staircases also facilitate the residents to interact
with each other.
