How is Adult ADHD Different from Childhood ADHD? ADHD, a brain-based disorder, affects attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. While it’s the same disorder in children and adults, the symptoms can manifest differently. In children, ADHD often shows up as impulsive behavior, hyperactivity, and trouble paying attention. In adults, it may present as disorganization, procrastination, and forgetfulness.
How is Adult ADHD Different from Childhood ADHD? ADHD is more likely to be diagnosed in boys and often missed in girls due to different symptom expressions. During childhood, ADHD is diagnosed with a ratio of about 2:1. However, the gender gap narrows in adulthood. Some children outgrow their symptoms, but about 30-60% of people continue to show significant symptoms into adulthood. Many develop coping mechanisms that make symptoms more subtle in adulthood.
Types of Adult ADHD and Their Symptoms
Causes of Adult ADHD The exact cause of ADHD is unknown, but it’s thought to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It often runs in families, indicating a genetic link. ADHD isn’t caused by poor parenting, diet, or too much screen time, but certain brain injuries or structural issues may contribute. Environmental factors like exposure to toxins or stress during pregnancy also play a role.
