1. Eligibility Criteria OF AK AWARD SELECTION
1. Eligibility Criteria
1.Completion timeframe: Projects must have been completed
within the award cycle (e.g., for the 2022–2025 cycle: between 1
Jan 2018 – 31 Dec 2023).
2.In use: Each project must have been in use for at least one full
year before it can be evaluated.
3.Scope: Any architectural project type is eligible — buildings
(large or small), housing, conservation/restoration, landscape,
urban regeneration, public spaces, infrastructure, etc.
4.Community focus: The project must serve Muslim
communities (entirely or partially), regardless of location
worldwide.
5.Exclusions: Projects directly linked to the Aga Khan, AKDN
agencies, or current jury/committee members are not eligible (to
avoid conflict of interest).
?????? 2. Selection Process
1.Nominations & Submissions:
oProjects are nominated by a global network of experts
("nominators").
oArchitects/clients can also submit projects directly.
2.Initial Screening:
oThe Secretariat checks if projects meet eligibility
requirements.
3.Master Jury Shortlisting:
oAn independent Master Jury (renowned architects, scholars,
planners, conservationists) reviews all submissions.
oAround 15–20 projects are shortlisted.

4.On-Site Reviews
oTeams of independent experts visit each shortlisted project.
oThey examine design, materials, construction quality, costs,
sustainability, community response, and long-term viability.
5.Final Jury Deliberation
oThe Master Jury reviews the site reports and debates
extensively.
oThey select the winning projects (usually 5–7 per cycle).
oThe jury also decides how the prize money is distributed
among architects, clients, builders, and artisans who
significantly contributed.
?????? 3. Evaluation Criteria
Projects are assessed on multiple layers — not just aesthetics but also
social, cultural, and environmental impact:
1.Design Excellence – Architectural innovation, spatial quality,
craftsmanship.
2.Contextual Relevance – How the design responds to local
culture, heritage, climate, and environment.
3.Sustainability – Use of appropriate materials, energy efficiency,
ecological sensitivity.
4.Social Impact – Contribution to community development,
public benefit, inclusivity, affordability.
5.Functionality & Use – How well the building serves users and
adapts to needs.
6.Innovation – New ideas in design, construction techniques, or
adaptive reuse.
7.Potential as a Model – How the project can inspire similar
solutions in other regions.
