MODELS OF COMMUNICATION Prepared by: Ms. Necole O.C.C 11
Learning Objectives: Differentiate the various models of communication; 1. Explain the process of communication through the elements involved; and 2. Recognize the importance of the models in understanding the communication process as applied in everyday life 3.
Communication plays a crucial role in human life.
Models of Communication Process
It is one-way process of communication, focusing on the transmission of a message to a receiver who never responds or has no way of responding to the information conveyed. LINEAR COMMUNICATION
LINEAR COMMUNICATION It is the skill of the individual to communicate. For example, the ability to read, write, speak, listen etc. attitudes towards the audience, subject and towards oneself. Not to the general knowledge, but to the knowledge of the subject that the person is communicating and their familiarity with it. Various aspects of society like values, beliefs, culture, religion and a general understanding of society. It is where the communication takes place. Culture of a particular society also comes under the social system.
LINEAR COMMUNICATION The body of a message, from the beginning to the end, comprises its content. It includes various things like language, gestures, body language, etc. They constitute all the elements of a particular message. It refers to the packing of the message and the way in which the message is conveyed or the way in which it is passed on or delivered. The structure of the message refers to how it is arranged; the way people structure the message into various parts. The means through which it is sent and in what form. Through this, people give and receive messages and communication takes place.
SHANNON-WEAVER COMMUNICATION MODEL One of the first and most influential models communication. It was created by Mathematician, Claude Shannon, and Scientist, Warren Weaver (1949), designed a model originally for telephone communication.
LINEAR COMMUNICATION It is also considered as the mother of all communication models.
LINEAR COMMUNICATION Noise is anything that interferes with or distorts the intended meaning of communication Physical noises – distractions in the environments such as seatmates talking, noises from the cars in traffic, etc. Psychological noises – thoughts that run through the communicator’s mind during the interaction that might take his/her attention away. Physiological noises – disturbances within the communicator’s body that might lead to difficulty in focusing on the communication process. Semantic noises – differences in meaning or interpretation of words or messages that may interrupt the communication process.
A two-way communication process where a response is given after a message is sent. The recipient of the action intentionally or unintentionally gives a feedback associated with the information received. INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION What is the significance of getting a response or reaction from the person to whom you addressed your statement?
Wilbur Schramm was a scholar and authority on mass communication. He created two interactive models; first highlights the importance of overlap in the communicator’s fields of experience in order that communication may occur, second depicts the dual roles of communicators where they can be both senders/encoders and receivers/decoders.
SCHRAMM’S MODEL OF COMMUNICATION
SCHRAMM’S MODEL OF COMMUNICATION ENCODER INTERPRETER DECODER DECODER INTERPRETER ENCODER MESSAGE MESSAGE Encoding is when an idea or information is translated into words and expressed to others. Decoding is when this idea or information is understood and interpreted by the receiver.
Communication is dynamic. It has a complex nature. It takes place among individuals at any given time with any given subject. TRANSACTIONAL COMMUNICATION
TRANSACTIONAL COMMUNICATION It shows a circular process of interaction between the persons involved in the communication, with each one actively participating and sharing ideas with one another. They are the communicators actively exchanging information and reaction.
TRANSACTIONAL COMMUNICATION Feedback is given freely and deliberately to one another or to all members participating in the communication transaction. The sender and the receiver may simultaneously exchange roles as communicators. Since communication is deemed dynamic and progressive, the topic may also change from time to time
TRANSACTIONAL COMMUNICATION In this concept, the noise or barrier to communication is also taken into consideration for it may directly or indirectly affect the smooth flow of communication. In the event that the message was not clearly conveyed due to the barrier, the communication continues in order to clarify the intended meaning of the sender.
TRANSACTIONAL COMMUNICATION When the transmission is cut along the way due to the barrier, the communicators work collaboratively to understand each other. Now, the sender becomes a receiver of feedback (the response from the receiver) and the receiver also acts as sender providing information in response to the message conveyed to him.
