1. ALCOHOL
(Ethyl alcohol)
Whisky –40%
Rum –40 to 60%
Gin –40%
Brandy –40 to 50%
Beers –9% (8 to 10%)
Wine –20%
Vodka –40 to 60%
Champagne –10 to 30%

2. SYMPTOMS:-
1.Stage of Excitement (80 to 100 mg/100 ml blood)
2.Stage of Stupor (100 to 200 mg/100 ml blood)
3.Stage of Coma (> 200mg/100 ml blood)
Death due to asphyxia from the paralysis of
respiratory centre
250 to 300mg /100 ml blood

3. DELIRIUM TREMENS
Withdrawal of alcohol in a habitual drunkard
•Hyper activity
•Extreme Confusion
•Agitation, restlessness
•Loss of memory
•May commit suicide or Homicide

Fine and imprisonment -6 months to 2 years.

4. WOOD SPIRIT, SPIRIT
(Methyl alcohol)
•Fatal dose –70 to 100 ml
•Fatal –Period 24 to 36 hr
SYMPTOMS
•Dizziness ,Weakness, Headache, Vertigo
•Nausea, Vomiting, Abdominal pain
•Fixed and dilated pupils, Photophobia and
blurred vision
•Partial of total blindness due to toxic effects of
formaldehyde on retinal cells

5. POST –MORTEM APPEARANCE
Stomach and intestine-congested
Lungs –congested, oedematous
Pungent smell of methyl alcohol
MEDICO-LEGAL SIGNIFICANCE
Methyl alcohol adulterated intoxicating beverages
are sometimes sold to poor people –Hooch tragedies.
