Atropine
•Atropine sulphate injection Atropine ophthalmic (eye)

Uses
•Old uses:
Women used to put Atropine, then known as Belladonna, into their eyes in
an attempt to make their pupils larger.
•Current uses:
✓ Used as a depressant for the stimulation of unconscious internal processes.
✓ A heart stimulant.
✓ Opposes action of the VagusNerve.

Drug applications
1. Ophthalmic use -Atropine is used as a cycloplegic, to temporarily paralyze the
accommodation reflex, and as a mydriatic, to dilate the pupils.
2. Resuscitation -Injections of atropine are used in the treatment of bradycardia (an
extremely low heart rate), asystole and pulseless electrical activity (PEA) in cardiac
arrest.
3. Secretions and broncho constriction -Atropine's actions on the parasympathetic
nervous system inhibits salivary, sweat, and mucus glands. This can be useful in
treating hyperhidrosis, and can prevent the death rattle of dying patients.
4. Treatment for organophosphate poisoning-Atropine is given as a treatment for
SLUDGE (Salivation, Lacrimation, Urination, Diaphoresis, Gastrointestinal
motility,Emesis) symptoms caused by organophosphate poisoning .

Pilocarpine
•Eye drops Oral tablets

•It is natural alkaloid , not hydrolyzed by acetylcholinesterase.
•Actions :
•Eye : loss of accommodation , miosis and lowering the intraocular pressure (IOP)
•Other actions : It stimulates the secretary glands and causes sweating, salivation and
lacrimation .
•Therapeutic uses of pilocarpine :
•In treatment of GLAUCOMA
•To reverse cycloplegic and mydriatic effects of atropine .
•Opthalmicsolution reduce intaocularpressure .

Vasaka
•Tablets Syrup Powder
Capsules

Uses -
•The main used part of the plant is its leaf.Its extract has been using as a
traditional medicine for centuries in our country.
•Used for treating cough, asthma, breathing trouble, nasal congestion, bleeding
disorders allergic conditions, upper respiratory infections, excessive uterine
bleeding, epistaxis (nosebleed).

Kurchi
•Solution (30ml) Tablets

Therapeutic Uses :
•Kurchibark is antiprotozoal in activity and used to treat amoebic dysentery
•Kurchibark is considered to be stomachic, astringent, tonic, anti-dysenteric,
febrifuge and anthelmintic
•The dried bark is rubbed over the body in dropsy
•Conessineis highly active against Entamoeba histolytica
•A traditional preparation of kurchibark i.e. “kutajarishta” is commonly used
specially for chronic amoebiasis
•The preparation of kurchinebismuth iodide which contains 23 to 27% total
alkaloid is used as anti dysenteric

Ephedra
•Tablets Dietary supplement for weight loss

Uses :
•Ephedrine,an alkaloid obtained from several species of Ephedra, is used in the preparation
of medicines for treating asthma, bronchitis, cough, cold, nasal disorder hay fever and also
used to treat kidney disorders.
•A decoction of stems and roots of several species is used in curing syphilis and rheumatism
•It is used as bronchodilator in asthma ephedrine used in to correct the 10w blood pressure
condition.
•Ephedra gerardianatincture is effective as a cardiac and circulatory stimulant.
•Increases fat loss
•Promote the building of lean body mass .
•Some species are grown as ornamental plants.( decorative )
•DOSE: ephedrine HCL or Sulphate 25-50mg, 6-8 times a day orally and parentally I.V
0.1ML%solution , 2-3times a day.

Pepper

Uses
•People take black pepper by mouth for arthritis, asthma, upset stomach,
bronchitis, a bacterial infection that causes diarrhea (cholera), colic, depression,
diarrhea, gas, headache, menstrual pain, stuffy nose, sinus infection, dizziness,
discolored skin (vitiligo), weight loss, and cancer.
•People apply black pepper to the skin for measles, nerve pain, itchy skin caused
by mites (scabies), and to treat pain.
•People inhale black pepper oil to prevent falls, to help quit smoking, and for
trouble swallowing.
•In foods, black pepper and black pepper oil are used as a spice.
