What is an Article? An article is a little word that comes before a noun ) There are 3 common articles in English: The An A 3

What is an Article? Many English language learners have difficulty choosing which article to use, or deciding if an article is needed. The first step is to look at the noun: Is it Specific – do you know which one OR can you see it? Is it a Proper Noun OR Is it Countable ? Is it Singular or Plural ? Have a look at the following chart: 4

5 Articles at a glance:

Article: A or An Use a or an before a noun that: is general (non specific) can be counted . Examples: I want to watch a movie . (any movie) I want a new job. (any job) 6

Use A: 1. Use a before a consonant sound: They bought a car . Vancouver is a beautiful city. There is a hair on my plate. 2. Use “ a ” when “u” sounds like /y/: Mina is in a union . 7

Use An: 1. Use an before a vowel sound. I watched an owl fly overhead. I ate an orange for breakfast. That is an ugly car. Use an when the “h” is silent Jake is an honest man. * NOTE : It is the sound and not the letter that determines whether you use a or an. 8

Use The: Use the before a specific noun . Specific means: you can see the noun you know which noun it is. Examples: The black-and-white puppy is really cute. (you know which puppy it is.) I am buying the blue dress . (you know which dress it is.) 9

The Use the before nouns that are: specific specific and plural non-countable Examples: The new rug matches the sofa . (specific) (specific) 2. The students made the posters in this room. (specific, plural) 3. The children played in the sand all day. (specific, plural) (non-countable) 10

No article No article is needed before: 1. a general, plural noun (dogs/cars/books). Example: Our family likes dogs. 2. a general, non-countable noun Example: He drinks coffee every day. Can you make rice for dinner? 3. a general, abstract noun Example: Love is celebrated on Valentine’s day. 11

No article No article is needed before: 4. Names of People, Companies, most Places, Universities (that don’t use “of”) Justin Trudeau, Microsoft, Facebook, Costco New York, Toronto, Winnipeg Cambridge, Oxford Exceptions: The United States, The United Kingdom 12

No article No article is needed before: 5. Days of the week, Months of the year, Addresses On Thursday, we’ll have dinner together. January is typically a cold month. I live at 22 Wickson Place, Toronto, Ontario. 13

Articles: General Tips Use the when there is only one of the noun. the sun, the moon (in the sky) the mall, the library, the hospital (in a city) 2. Use the for the second mention of a noun. I bought a laptop yesterday. The laptop was expensive I want a new puppy. The puppy must be house broken. 14

Articles: General Tips 3. Use the with the names of oceans, seas, mountain ranges, deserts, and rivers • The Amazon is longer than the Mississippi. 15

Articles: General Tips 4. Use the with a general noun when the noun is followed by that and information that describes it (an adjective clause). • The shoes that I wear every day are red. • The TV that I want to buy is really big. 5. Use a, an or no article with a specific noun when the sentence starts with “There is/are” and includes a preposition.
